Radio Times – BBC Not Ruled Out Female Doctor Poll

BBC Not Ruled Out Female Doctor

From The Radio Times

The new Doctor could be handed the keys to the TARDIS as early as next month, BBC sources have confirmed – with insiders suggesting Matt Smith’s replacement needs to be announced before the Doctor Who Christmas special begins filming next month.

The Twelfth Doctor is expected to first appear on screen at the end of the Christmas special, following the regeneration of Matt Smith’s Doctor.

It would be virtually impossible to keep the identity of the new doctor a secret even if the entire set went into lockdown during filming of the Christmas special, a BBC source told RadioTimes.com.

“The search has begun in earnest and is active now,” the source said, adding that the BBC has not ruled out hiring a woman to replace Matt Smith.

So like so many other we ask the question – yes of no!…

I don’t have a problem with a woman playing the role, I just don’t trust the writers to tackle it correctly, which would be to have a couple of jokes after the regeneration then totally ignore the fact afterwards.

If you can’t treat a woman the same way a man would be treated then the whole point in allowing it in the first place is defeated. Same goes for deliberately casting a woman in the role, both genders would need to be fairly judged.

The thing is The Doctor is a man not a woman it would be weird and in my opinion wrong

Indeed it would be weird, but what you need to remember is that the Doctor is Gallifreyan, and the possibility does exist for it to happen. He may be a man at the moment but that means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things.

In fact just to make things even odder, it can actually happen in real life, clown fish can change from male to female and carry on as though nothing has happened (you’ll never watch Finding Nemo in thh same way again).

I just watched “The Wrath of Eukor” and you know, it wasn’t half bad, I thought the Doctor wasn’t too bad either, especially for an American (never mind she was a woman). Yes I thought it was pretty good, very reminisant of actual Doctor Who episodes of the time. Did you know they made three more, I’m going to watch those too at some point.

I work in a secondry school, both male and female students are very very opposed to a female doctor. These kids know the doctors history ie hes a grandad ect ect. It would be wrong and most have said they would stop watching (honestly).

Yes, it would be something fresh, but I don’t think it could hold itself up for a long time. It would be too great a change and lose lots of viewers. It’s fine for the show to reference other films and tv shows, but one thing it doesn’t need to do is become Orlando.

As a female fan of the show, I honestly think having a female play as the Doctor would be awful. Yes it is knows for Timelords to regenerate between genders, but The Doctor has always been a male, don’t change that. It would honestly be really weird.

I know Alex Kingston played Riversong. But if anyone was to play a female Doctor, she would be pretty badass. I’m totally neutral about this topic, but Kingston was one of the best actors on Doctor Who, and i am obsessed with her character Riversong. Sorry for that relevancy. 😆

Not irrelevant. She was his WIFE. The first wife ever as far as I can recollect. If we consider the Dr as being the most important man in the Universe, then Riversong is perhaps the most important woman – and she went through changes!

Ok we know that timelords have been known to regenerate from male to female and other way around, don’t forget “The Corsair” was reported to have done this in his past.
But as for the Doctorr to become female (no offence ladies ok?) sorry but i have to disagree with this and hope it is yet another spin of the rumour mill!

personally, i don’t really care if the new doctor is male or female, but i would prefer a female doctor, it’d just seem like a fresh, new thing to be introduced to the whoniverse, if she’s even half as good as Matt smith, that’d be good too.

I personally think that it would be an interesting and fresh element to the show that in some ways would still be keeping a close link to the series as the question has been around for decades. Also it would help to keep the doctor and assistant romantic thing to a minimum (if the show continues to use female companions).

I would not mind a female doctor if she had been introduced years ago in the classic series, I feel that it is too late. This female doctor would be separated from the 11 others which is inevitable. Plus if 12 is a female then 13 would have to be female as people would complain if he became a man, further separating her from the other 11 doctors. This is my view

It’s a hard question to answer as it has been suggested everytime a new one has been cast but to be realistic it would be weird having a woman in the role as it has always been a man but I wouldn’t rule it out but I would have to say no.

Can there ever be a female Doctor? Yes, ‘That’s the problem with regeneration, never quite know what you’re going to get’ and also the Corsair reference from the Doctor’s Wife. Should there be one? Well there is a lot of interesting things that could be done if the Doctor was female and a lot of incredible actresses who could play the role amazingly. Will there be one? Unlikely for one reason, too many people are aggressively opposed to it and sadly that’s what will stop it. I personally want a good character and it played well first and with a show like Who there’s not the same restrictions on how you can do your casting. The Doctor doesn’t have to have an English accent, or be the same skin colour, or look the same age. It’s incredible we are discussing whether the Doctor can go from being played by an actor to an actress while to some Bond fans the fact Daniel Craig is blonde is a step too far!

NO. Gender swapping does NOT belong in a FAMILY show! If she was well written and a good actress, I MIGHT forgive it. Maybe.

The Doctor has already stated it can occur! See: The Corsair.

Actually, why not bring David back? There is no law says he can’t regenerate a prior appearance, or choose one.

It’s not really gender swapping. And what is wrong with people who have had a gender change being on a family show. They are people like anyone else and children should know about them instead of just thinking the whole world is made up of straight couples with children!

    • Dalek: the Supreme

      June 3rd, 2013 - 11:11pm

Because the show is about change. Bringing in Tennant when he’s already played the Doctor is unfair to other actors who would interested in the role and a spit in the face to the show itself, since Doctor Who is about change and regeneration.

Not being sexist, but I really just don’t think a female Doctor would work. It would totally ruin the flow of the show too, having had a male Doctor for every other incarnation.

Change is sometimes a good thing, but I don’t think in this case it would be.
