12th Doctor Revealed – What do you Think?
12th Doctor Revealed – What do you Think?
The new Doctor is Peter Capaldi!
So the wait is over and we now know who will take over from Matt Smith in the Christmas Special – so what do you think?
In a special live broadcast, the BBC today announced that the role of Doctor Who would next be played by Peter Capaldi.
Amid much hype and speculation, Peter Capaldi was unveiled as the next Doctor during a special live television event on BBC ONE tonight.
Widely regarded as one of the biggest roles in British television, Capaldi will be the Twelfth Doctor and takes over from Matt Smith who leaves the show at Christmas.
Peter Capaldi says: “Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.”
Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer says : “It’s an incendiary combination: one of the most talented actors of his generation is about to play the best part on television. Peter Capaldi is in the TARDIS!”
Doctor Who companion, Jenna Coleman says “I’m so excited Peter Capaldi is the man taking on the challenge of becoming the Twelfth Doctor. With Steven’s writing and his talent I know we’ll be making an amazing show with an incredible incarnation of number 12. I can’t wait to start this new adventure!”
Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One says : “Peter Capaldi has all the genius and versatility needed to take on the mantel of the great Time Lord and make the role his own. He’ll bring his own particular wisdom, charisma and wit to the Twelfth Doctor and take the show into an exciting new era.”
Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning says : “We started thinking Peter Capaldi might be the right person to take on this iconic part a few months ago. But it was only when he did a secret audition at Steven’s house under the cover of darkness that we knew we had our man. He’s an extraordinarily talented actor who can seemingly turn his hand to anything. We can’t wait to premiere his unique take on the Doctor on Christmas Day and we are sure he’s going to become one of the all-time classic Doctors.”
Rankin exclusively shot Peter Capaldi this morning, picture available from www.bbcpictures.com
Doctor Who is produced by BBC Cymru Wales
BIOGRAPHY
Peter Capaldi is an award winning actor, film maker and lifelong Doctor Who fan.
He has enjoyed an illustrious career to date in both film and television.
Before securing the coveted role of the Twelfth Doctor, Peter first appeared in Doctor Who in 2008, playing Caecilius in the episode “The Fires of Pompeii”.
Peter grew up in Glasgow and attended the Glasgow School of Art, while studying there he secured his first breakthrough role in Local Hero (1983). He has also had roles in Dangerous Liaisons, The Crow Road, The Devil’s Whore and Torchwood: Children of Earth.
It is his role as Government spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in the BBC comedy series, The Thick of It , that has earned Peter both international and award success. In 2010 he won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Role and the BPG Best Actor Award. In both 2010 and 2012, Peter won the British Comedy Award for Best TV Comedy Actor. A film spin-off from The Thick of It, entitled In the Loop, was released in 2009.
As well as appearing in front of the camera, Peter is an award winning film maker. In 1995, he won the Oscar for Best Short Film (Live Action) for Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life. He also wrote Soft Top, Hard Shoulder, which won the audience award at the London Film Festival, and wrote and directed Strictly Sinatra. Peter’s stage credits include Professor Marcus in The Ladykillers at the Liverpool Playhouse, which saw the play transfer to the Gielgud Theatre in London.
2013 has been a busy year for Peter who has been seen on screen in the film World War Z and in BBC Two drama series The Hour, for which he was BAFTA nominated. Not only will Peter film his first scenes for Doctor Who this Autumn, but he will appear in the forthcoming film The Fifth Estate and the Disney film Maleficent.
Peter is currently filming new BBC One drama series The Musketeers, in which he plays Cardinal Richelieu which will launch in early 2014.

Unexpected but ……
BRILLIANT! FANTASTIC! AMAZING!
the third Scottish actor to play the doctor after Sylvester McCoy and David tennant
JennaColemanCanNeverLeaveDoctorWho
August 5th, 2013 - 5:13pmI’m still getting used to the new doctor thing but I think that they have released the name too early because now the 50th doesn’t seem right to be because we know about the new doctor and who he is going to be. I am meeting matt smith but now he is not officially the doctor, he is the old doctor.

August 5th, 2013 - 4:44pmVery pleased with the appointment of Peter Capaldi. I have enjoyed his work on The Hour, et al, and hope he is allowed to bring some statesmanship, authority, gentlemanly qualities, weight, gravity and drama to the role. He is an excellent actor.

August 5th, 2013 - 4:15pmHe is new and exciting. We have never had a 55 year old Scottish actor play The Doctor.

August 6th, 2013 - 4:06pmHe’s the oldest Doctor since William Hartnell, how can you call him new or nephew or pretty?

Did anybody have a flutter on it here out of interest and what odds were you given?

August 5th, 2013 - 1:34pmI think it’s a good decision.
Good luck to Capaldi and I hope he has many good years in the tardis.

August 5th, 2013 - 2:06pmI think he will be the longest doctor taking over tom baker
Louisa Searle
August 5th, 2013 - 1:20pmBrilliant! He’s an excellent actor and i hope he keeps his accent. The age thing needs chop and change or it may get too boxed in and stale. Lets be real, the Doctor looked younger than River but was 900 + years older than her. The timely whimey thing is messy – that’s half the fun of it. 🙂
dalek 2
August 5th, 2013 - 12:39pmpeter is a great actor but i honestly think he wont fit the part he’s not young enough, he wont fit correctly with clara and i just cant picture that man as the doctor, he’s ruined a bit of the 50th for me.there’s lots of other great actors who could of played him, i think steven made the wrong decision, young kids wont like him they like fun young people they can role model off
Anonymous
August 5th, 2013 - 1:03pmWait and see. Everyone though Tom Baker was wrong for the role and he went on the be the most iconic incarnation in the shows history.
Also, remember that Matt came in for stick(what, from Doctor Who fans…never…they necver complain :)) for being too young…yet you forgot the actors physcial age within minutes of his firs episode.
There was an 19 year gap between Christopher Ecclestone and Billie Piper and they carried off the lovey duvey relationship that RTD wrote for them…I think Clara will be a proper assistant (none of this love nonsense) a bit like Ace was to the 7th Doctor, therefore it will work.
Anonymous
August 5th, 2013 - 1:06pmAlso…Tom Baker was a grand old age when I started watching him and as a kid, it didnt not deter me. I think we have to give kids more credit – they dont always need young role models….just cool ones.
the eternal doctor
August 5th, 2013 - 2:08pmI think it is good that he is old but there are other doctor who are older like William hartnel
Anonymous
August 5th, 2013 - 4:01pmHe’s not far off from William Hartnells age when he played the First Doctor and he had children interested in the show.
dalek 2
August 5th, 2013 - 4:12pmu said you watched tom baker as a kid so because your an older fan than i am we have come far since the 70’s and i think the younger people like the younger actors because they can relate to them but because older fans like you, you cant relate to them but the older actors
Anonymous
August 5th, 2013 - 7:41pmYes, you are correct, I am an older fan but my favourite doctor is Matt Smith….so I can relate to him as well as I related to the older actors when I was a kid. I think it would be a shame if today’s generation of younger viewers could not relate to the new doctor just because he is older – it will be different, yes but he will still be a a cool role model. Look at Star Trek NG….they introduced a bald, older English guy who rarely ran or fought…yet he turned out to be as popular as the good old American (Canadian) action hero Kirk.

August 5th, 2013 - 12:38pmAbsolutely the right choice. Glad the show has gone in this direction. Good bold departure from the young fresh face Matt Smith. Not that I didn’t like Matt, he embodied the role perfectly just as I am sure Peter will too.

when the doctor starts to regenerate he realises he can control this regeneration so he can control what he looks like so he looks back at all the faces he has seen and he decides he the face of Caecilius from Pompeii so he decides he wants to change in to him

August 5th, 2013 - 12:51pmLet’s just say that the Universe is a big place and sometimes people end up looking the same. It’s bound to happen. It’s better accepting this theory than trying to explain why the many actors who have appeared as different characters in ‘Doctor Who’ and it’s spin-offs all look similar to each other.
The 14th Doctor
August 5th, 2013 - 1:11pmWhy would he want to look like Caecilius lol? Remember, for the Doctor, his encounter with Caecilius occurred over 200 years ago. Why would he want to take the face of one random Roman guy who he probably wouldn’t remember very well anyway?

August 5th, 2013 - 11:54amRomana mark 2 regenerated in Princess Astra from a previous episode so why cant the doctor regenerate into someone he has met.
Jermane Palma
August 5th, 2013 - 11:55amWhat about Romana regenerating in to a person she and the Doctor met? Isn’t that the same principle? Perhaps they will use the same idea, or even NOT mention it at all.

August 5th, 2013 - 12:17pmand David Tennant played a Time Lord in an Audio play.
There is a fan based theory that Time Lords subconsciously choose bodies of people they have met. Also, in the show, when Ramana regenerated, she “chose” the form of a character called Princess Astra who was played by the same actress that played Ramana new incarnation…so this has been going on since the 70’s. Its nothing new.

August 5th, 2013 - 9:52amI thought they would have plumped for an unknown but relieved and pleased its an established actor of peter capaldis stature ( would have cried and switched off had it been sue perkins). Loved ‘local hero’ and ‘The thick of it’,so can expect good things, also an older doctor seems obvious after the last two more youthful docs. I just knew the bbc would play it safe. If they do plan a female doctor next time, I,d go for an androgenous doctor that could be played to fun effect by someone like the media was speculating, someone like zawe ashton from ‘fresh meat’ or at the least make her a future companion. she,d be great.

August 5th, 2013 - 9:02amBut there’s more than twelve doctors theres john hurts doctor theres the watcher( he was the doctor all along) the brain of korbious doctor’s( no they are not morbious it clearly states its the doctor) what about the valyard or the dream lord and not forgeting richard hurdnell in the five octors so there you have it the 25 doctors

August 5th, 2013 - 9:03amSorry i ment morbious
Scott the Raptor
August 5th, 2013 - 10:27amRichard Hurndall played the First Doctor, the Dream Lord isn’t a living creature, th Valeyard is the dark side of The Doctor, so not The Doctor. The people in The Brain of Morbius, again so far are not living entity’s, so we can’t be sure they have actually walked out of the TARDIS and John Hurt is not The Doctor. Did you not hear Matt Smith say, “I said he was me, I didn’t say he was The Doctor,” and I know it said Introducing John Hurt as The Doctor, but what else are they supposed to do? Introducing John Hurt as the Character that we don’t know the identity of yet?
booboo
August 5th, 2013 - 10:30amThey introduced him as The Doctor so people are going to think that he is, you cant blame people for believing for what the BBC put in screen.
Scott the Raptor
August 5th, 2013 - 11:01amMatt Smith said it himself, he isn’t the doctor. At least not anymore.
Anonymous
August 5th, 2013 - 12:48pmI think Matt Smith’s doctor was implying that John’s Hurts character didnt act under the “name of the Doctor” (after all that was the name of the episode), rather than saying he wasnt the same the timelord as hime – he is the disgraced and forgotten incarnation of the Time Lord we call the Doctor….only that incarnation didnt act in the name of the Doctor…but doesnt mean he is not the Doctor. Clear as mud? 🙂 Thats the way I see it…we’ll find out for sure in Novemeber.
Anonymous
August 5th, 2013 - 12:53pmMy theory is that Moffat wants to deal with the whole 13 incarnations limitation issue while he is running the show. Knowing that it would be another 5-6 years at least before we got through 2 more incarnations, he has introduced John Hurt’s forgotten incarnation to bring that all forward…so now Peter Capaldi is the 13th and last incarnation…we then have a Doctor who has to respect mortality like most other beings….but more importantly it gives Moffat the chance to write around it so the show can continue beyond 13 incarnations. Afterall, they’ve been fudging the Masters incarnations for decades.
Scott the Raptor
August 5th, 2013 - 1:44pmBut he’s not The Doctor, he’s whatever the Doctors name is.
DOCTOR WHO ONE
August 5th, 2013 - 8:58amHere’s a thought.
Out of the previous surviving Doctors, it was Peter Davison who ended up being interviewed by Zoe Ball, and later Peter Capaldi was introduced as the new 12th Doctor.
Does anyone else think it was perhaps deliberate to interview Peter Davison before introducing the new man ? using ‘PETER’ as a clue to the new man’s identity.
Think about it 😉
Course, I could be wrong, but then again, maybe I’m right, maybe it was intentional so as to use Peter Davison to get us guessing by the use of his first name, and the fact that the Bookies had Peter Capaldi the most bet on actor for the part 🙂
Time’s Ending……
August 5th, 2013 - 8:30amExcellent choice for the Doctor, I wasn’t too sure to start with, but with the benefit of a nights rest and looking at the choice of Peter Capaldi in the fresh light of day, he is a brilliant actor, his part as Lucius Caecilius in The Fires Of Pompeii, gave us a glimpse of the man who might be The Doctor, and looking at his performance as John Frobisher in Children Of Earth, you can clearly see that Peter is the ideal man for the role of The Doctor, so please as we did with lovely Matt Smith, so to all the fans out there who are decrying the choice of Peter as The Doctor, give him time and please please please don’t judge him on his performance as The Doctor, based just on his post regeneration scene, as all the fans did to Matt Smith again based on his post regeneration scene, after all Matt has turned out to be an excellent Doctor, lets don’t forget we all still have Matt’s performance as The Doctor to look forward too in the upcoming 50th anniversary story & I am both sure & safe in the knowledge that Peter will be a wonderful 12th Doctor & that the future of Doctor Who is rest assured….
Ian
August 5th, 2013 - 8:20amPeter Capaldi is a fine actor. But he is just that, an actor. People just give him the words to say and tell him what to do.
He will have a hard time of it if the scripts and storylines continue on the downward spiral they have been on for a while now. He lacks the style to carry off the comedic and, frankly, magical (in a bad sense) approach that Smith had the physical talent for. So he has to have some decent material to get his teeth into, otherwise his acting talent will make all too clear the paucity of ideas and lack of internal logic that has been a feature of so many recent episodes.
Good luck to him.

August 5th, 2013 - 12:22pmLets fave it not many people had heard of David Tennant or Matt Smith…or even Tom Baker before they took on the roles.
To be honest though, Peter Capaldi is very established…similar to Christopher Eccleston – not exactly a household name but a very familar face to certain age groups within the UK. This is an experienced actor who have played many different and colourful characters. We are in safe hands….we now just hope the brief he is given on how to play the Doctor (along with the scripts) match his actig abilites.
DOCTOR WHO ONE
August 5th, 2013 - 7:23amSo glad it’s an actor I know for a change, cos when Chris, David and Matt where announced in times gone by, all I said what “Who the hell is he ?” when each one was announced in 2004, 2005 and 2009 respectively, but not this time, FINALLY !! an actor I know for a change !! 😀
Plus I read online today that his won an Oscar winner so his no doubt Oscar winning material.
Thankfully at least his older then Chris, David and Matt, as so many of us where getting fed up of the Doctor getting younger and younger, his also now the 2nd actor to play the Doctor after having played another role in Doctor Who just like Colin Baker [Commander Maxil / the 6th Doctor, while Peter was a guy who’s name eludes me right now in ‘The Fires of Pompeii], his also the 2nd actor to play the lead role with his first name being ‘Peter’ since Peter Davison [can’t include Peter Cushing thou, he don’t really count], and his now, along with Sylvester McCoy and David Tennant, Doctor Who 3rd Scottish Doctor.
I look forward to the 12th Doctor years. Welcome [back] Peter Capaldi !! 😀

August 5th, 2013 - 12:28amCongratulations Peter Capaldi you ARE the Doctor, looking forward so much to enjoying your adventures & learning more about your Doctor, Older, Wiser, Darker, and excellent! I’m really sure you’ll show the haters & turn them into lovers! And make the doubters humbly eat their words. Each Doctor has his habits, his ways, his DIFFERENCES that’s what makes him the Doctor & I can see he will be a Doctor many many will love, I already see a bit of Eccleston mixed with Tom Baker, he has his toothy grin and I see a darker Doctor, a fatherly like figure protective of Clara, an adventurous Doctor who will enchant & engross Adults & Children alike in his amazing adventures to new worlds, familiar worlds, new enemies & old ones, a man who will look Daleks in the eye like no Doctor before & show them who is the boss, a man with no fear, fighting for Earth, humanity & the good people of all the universe, spreading fear into the hearts & minds of those who commit harm to the good. So haters beware you may not like Doctor in his 12th? regeneration right now but he IS going to WIN OVER YOUR HEARTS! You just wait & see! OUR DOCTOR! Peter Capaldi we TRUE WHOVIANS love you & WE know your going to show the doubters, the haters!, Peter is the same age as Hartnell, NOT too old, so get over your ageism he’s gonna prove you wrong!
