News On Doctor Who Spin off “Class” Next Week

According to Patrick Ness on twitter announcements will be made on the brand new Doctor Who Spin off “Class” next week.

Class is a YA series set in contemporary London. Incredible dangers are breaking through the walls of time and space, and with darkness coming, London is unprotected. With all the action, heart and adrenalin of the best YA fiction (Buffy, Hunger Games), this is Coal Hill School and Doctor Who like you’ve never seen it before.

It always seems that spin offs very rarely work, it may be ok in Big Finish stories, etc but trying to squeeze life out of something is approaching desperate. However, to all those who want to watch it, I hope it satiates your curiosity and appetites.

Because none of the older Doctors would want that sort of nine month schedule over their heads, and the fan backlash for trying to recreate or “replace” missing episodes would render the others pointless.

Except ‘Coal Hill School’ is a fictional creation within the ‘Doctor Who Universe’ and Toyota’s are not. Spin-offs can have overlapping characters or not, sometimes it’s a place or an idea (Casualty > Holby City > Holby Blue / Casualty 1900 series)

Im still baffled as to why we can’t have another Doctor Who show. If the current team can not produce more than 13 episodes a year then why not pull a NCIS franchise and have regular current Doctor who, And Classic Doctor Who starring MCGANN or Re cast The First Doctor or Second Doctor and give us Marco Polo, The Crusade, Faceless ones… You know… Like the rest of the Entertainment world that supplies us with 22-26 episodes a year for flagship shows. Even Walking Dead, Startrek, Stargate, and other popular franchises have ran spinoffs at the same time and one show didn’t take with it the others audience. Each had their own audience and the hard cores watched both or all spin-offs. Im sure Class will be just fine, I just don’t understand the claim of spinoff. So what that Coal Hill school is in it. Ive seen several Doctor Who episodes that have Toyota’s in them, so by that rational if they make a show about a terrorist cell taking down the British Government as long a Toyota is in every episode it can now be called a Doctor Who spinoff…cause clearly a universe that has a car in two shows is obviously the same franchise?

I am quite interested in seeing a Clara and Ashildr spin off (despite the fact that I didn’t like Clara very much in the beginning, she grew on me by the end) I saw somewhere, cant remember where, someone had a theory about this spin off, that ‘class’ was just a code name for ‘CL’ara and ‘AS’hlidr ‘S’pin off, personally I’d prefer it to a spin off set in coal hill

Unlike the other 2 spinofs the lack of a high profile and well loved lead character is going to make this very hard to be successful, unless they get the cast & writing dead right. There looks to be very little tie in to DR Who other than set in the same universe. With both Clara & Danny long gone from the school noone knows who the Doctor is unless someone from UNIT is a periodical visitor, that may be a way to tie the show into the overall story, Osgood maybe?

As with anything new in the whoniverse I think we should all reserve judgement until once the new show has aired. I am sure there will be few links with the main show and some familliar faces poping up along the way. So let’s wait and see and give Class a chance.May I wish the Crew, actors and writters all the best for this new venture.

I’m hoping we get a strong returning lead character from Doctor Who in there (it hasn’t been denied yet, although it wouldn’t be Clara as Jenna has only just left to get on with other work) – That is one of the main things that made SJA and Torchwood a success, and without it this would feel very poorly connected to Doctor Who and would turn some viewers off – however we shall see how this turns out. I’m not saying it will be good, I’m not saying it will be bad. Let’s just see a few episodes before we make any judgements.

    Let’s see.

It will be darker than Doctor Who, but not at Torchwood gratuitous levels (trying to be mature by filling it will adult material, making it look like a ten year old’s view of “adult television”), there may be ap rominent character throughout but not as a regular, there may be a cameo but it’s not going to be a regular thing (and it certainly isn’t the reason for the delay, Doctor Who is still going to be filming this year, the show was not delayed because of Steven Moffat or Peter Capaldi’s schedules).

    And no Clara or Ashildir.

As they stated repeatedly, Sarah Jane Smith is still alive and still saving the world and will continue to do so forever. That was the wishes of all those involved.

Strong language does not always denote maturity. What made Children Of Earth so good was it’s fresh and hideously relatable view on science fiction ideas.

    What I’m hopeful for:

A Torchwood feel to it (with some strong language and dark themes)
A prominent character from Doctor Who to appear throughout the series
Maybe a cameo from the Doctor (or several, maybe that’s why there’s no Who til 2017 because capaldi could be working on this)
One unused monster from Doctor Who given their chance to shine

But what I’m really hopeful for is that Class is based on Clara and Ashildr and they’re just covering it up by calling it class for now

Hope the doctor makes a cameo of some sorts, it will make it feel like it’s in the same universe more

I hope it has at least a appearance of one monster or character from doctor who to help the audience believe that it is set in the same universe like what they did for other spin offs. But I still want new characters that’s important for a series like this. And a new monster and villain is always a good idea.

I’m 99.9% certain it will flop, as there are no familiar characters from the show. They should have made a one off episode or a series that picks up from SJA, where Sarah has passed away and Luke, Rani and Clyde have to team up with Jo Grant and Captain Jack. That would have been amazing… 🙂

Really not feeling any interest of excitement with this. I got a feeling it will collapse dreadfully…
I hate to be pessimistic but I’ve got no investment in it at the moment, it will take something gripping for me to have.
