February 15th, 2017 - 11:36amSo a new Doctor will likely get a series shown in the autumn of 2018. So isn’t there a good possibility that a 55th anniversary story could be shown in November.
The Living Shadow
February 16th, 2017 - 10:37amI guess it depends on the ratings.
If series 10 does really well, then they’ll probably air series 11 in spring too, because the last couple of series have not gotten as high rating as previous years (TV ‘live’ viewings that is) and they were also both aired in autumn, so perhaps them being aired in autumn is the reason for the lower viewing figures (we’all see after series 10).
I doubt they’ll have a 55 year anniversary though, as it’s not really a milestone.

February 14th, 2017 - 11:44pmBet it is Kris Marshall cos the BBC circulate their band of actors quite tight and I believe he has just left a series. Also he has the right look and demeanour
Tim M
February 15th, 2017 - 11:34amI think Kris Marshall would be excellent. I hope his name is near the top of Chibnall’s wish list.

February 10th, 2017 - 10:59pmReally don’t get the moffat bashing, I’ve loved his time in charge and anyway the people complaining about him will no doubt complain about chibnall as Well!
Whorules
February 10th, 2017 - 11:05pmOh, and does it not occur to these “fans” that the more loudly they complain the more likely it is for the show they profess to love to be cancelled – very silly, just try to support it!

February 11th, 2017 - 7:37amI agree!! We are lucky to have this show and I think people should realise that!! However we are also very passionate about the show and our thoughts are often voiced sometimes a little too loudly! The guy on BBC breakfast last week said that Gareth Roberts coined the word ‘anticippoinment’, and it is so true. But no matter how the series goes we always have the doctor, the TARDIS and monsters and it’s so great to get that every week.
I also agree with you about Moffat. I think he has been not only a great writer and showrunner but also the most wonderful ambassador for the show. Plus he has given us Day of the Doctor ( one of the best episodes in the show history) and created the Weeping Angels and in total has written for 8 doctors. (Since 2005 that is). How many showrunners can say that. And all this while he has been juggling his Sherlock commitments! Great guy! Chibnall has some huge boots to fill!!!!
The Outcast
February 11th, 2017 - 1:14pm‘Nobody’s perfect’ – Ace, Remembrance of the Daleks.
There will always be ‘hate’ for different aspects of the show. I hate Name of the Doctor, only watched it once. I also hate Hell bent. But I have reasons for my disliking of these stories. Name of the Doctor’s Clara revelations and the fact that Jenny was randomly resurrected via a handy plot device and Hell bent had the Doctor kill someone with a gun, even though
A) He was an ally
B) Saving Clara would kill everyone
I know he has used guns in the Classic series but only in self defence (and he felt justified when he did). Got a bit side tracked, but what I’m trying to say is that people are always going to have criticisms. Very rare are the people who hate for no reason. People only criticise to give the BBC/Production Team feed back to help them make changes to the show to improve it. If you don’t like the ‘Hate’ just ignore it or ask for the ‘Hater’s’ reasoning why.
Whorules
February 11th, 2017 - 7:32pmOk, first in response to hell bent the points made are explained in the storyline, the fact that the doctor was willing to shoot an ally and didn’t care that by saving clara he’d comdem the universe was the point of the danger of the hybrid, the gestalt that the doctor/clara became.
But… in general I accept that people don’t like everything and that’s as it should be. There are moffat era stories I don’t rate as there are rt Davies stories I didn’t like. There are stories from every era, from hartnell through Tom baker to McCoy and beyond but my objection to some of the comments is the nasty, vicious nature of them. Personal attacks sweeping declarations and rabid responses seem now to be deemed as acceptable by some fans and it makes me ashamed to be a fan when I read hateful bile spewed out.
I could not run doctor who, very few fans could, the reality of making television, the politics the finances the responsibility of running a huge internationally watched show are just beyond us. It’s very easy for fans to say a,b and c should happen, but a show runner on any programme doesn’t answer to the fans, they have have to run the show as they see fit and conform to rules, regulations and more importantly “bosses”!
If a “fan” doesn’t like what is happening in any show they have a very simple choice, stop watching, because the chances are there even more “fans” out there who do like and will continue to watch. Me, I’ll continue to watch because I don’t see any difference between who from my childhood and who now. Bring on the next series and bring on the 15th doctor (yep, the real number is 15)
The Outcast
February 12th, 2017 - 8:14amJust cause things are explained doesn’t mean’ll like them, but I agree that sometimes people get too carried away with these things, that might have something to do with the fact that many people who watch have been fans since their childhoods. Could it be possible some people see bad stories as personal attacks? Still, some people need to bottle their anger and have polite debates rather than type swearwords words in the comments.
Whorules
February 12th, 2017 - 11:00amSorry outcast, I wasn’t saying you didn’t understand, just that there was a storyline point, and yes people need to step back. It’s like those newspaper reports of the “bad guys” in soap operas being hit by people in supermarkets and the street for attacking a beloved character. At the end of the day doctor who is just a TV show and it will end again someday it’s inevitable and a lot of people don’t seem to realise that.
Now I like Colin baker as an actor, big finish proved what a good doctor he had the potential to be, but I personally struggled with his TV stories. Not him, I just didn’t think they were very well written. Some are decent, but most just don’t work for me. But I didn’t sit in the 80’s screaming at the screen John nathan-Turner/Eric saward why do you hate Me! But you are right people just need to chill. Me and a couple of mates love to argue the pros and cons of stories but we wouldn’t dream of using the kind of language and generalisations that regularly appear online.

February 12th, 2017 - 11:00amIt’s a shame he has to leave, but we still have the Series 8 and 9 Box Sets in rememberance, still.

February 12th, 2017 - 11:52amI agree that we are lucky to even have the show but in truth Moffatt is unable to stick to one theme in an episode. in my opinion just because he has good ideas doesn’t mean we should stop complaining. under his direction, dw has seriously changed and not for the better. some episodes I admit have been very good but he seems to let go of his writers and let them do what they want. maybe people wouldn’t be criticising him if he actually did a good job
Whorules
February 12th, 2017 - 9:58pmMoffat is only the second showrunner in the history of who and since 2010 the show has become massively poplar in North and south American, Asia and across the world so yes, he must be doing a bad job! I genuinely give up…

February 10th, 2017 - 3:19pmI’ve watched who since 1975 (five years old is when I remember the stories with clarity, I do have vague memories of pertwee but only snatches, my earliest memory is green death) and I have to say the very idea of Danny dyer fills me with horror! Which is odd because normally I’m not bothered who plays the role. I have no problem with the casting of a woman, a young, middle-aged or older person male or female but Danny dyer… luckily this will hopefully be the usual paper selling tricks from the red tops again and shame on the beeb if it isn’t!
Tim M
February 10th, 2017 - 8:40pmI trust Chibnall to cast a decent actor to be the next Doctor, and not someone who sounds like a poor version of Ray Winston, has no vocal range, and considers facial acting to be nothing more than constantly frowning.

February 14th, 2017 - 11:16pmOkay let’s continue rumours. The makers usually pick fairly unknowns as the series is expensive to make so they pick someone who appeals. Although of course I know Peter has years of experience However AIDAN Turner would be excellent. Just look at him in Being Human but he may be looking to be part of a bigger league now. Hope not because he has the emotional range to carry the role

February 4th, 2017 - 3:24amVery Sad Peter Capaldi going. But next regeneration could be the Doctors last but if he lucky he might get more montelitly. February 3rd, 2017 - 4:37pmI remember watching the very first episode of Dr Who with Hartnell in charge of the Tardis.
Maybe I have some rights to comment after all this time as a veteran viewer who once hid behind the 60’s sofa..
We have had rich seams of Dr Who over the decades since..
I personally loved the Clara/Matt Smith Christmas Special with the Snowmen and Richard E Grant.. A terrific show..
For myself I have never warmed to the Capaldi incarnation of the Doctor. As a result I have been lost as viewer. Sorry chaps but he was not my cup of tea.
I hear that Capaldi is being given the heave-ho from the open door of the Tardis in due course. I am relieved..
Where does this long saga of the Doctor go from here?
How does it regenerate itself yet again.. but to be honest it is a saga almost too long for it’s own good or is it to be kept going like a sci-fi heritage story… too precious to let go ..
I see Ben Wishaw named as a plausible front man. Or should there be a woman? Katherine Kelly appears to be a named candidate as she is taking a striking position in CLASS. It won’t work though as she does not do enough…but we really do need a quirky male in the role.. that has always worked.. Paul McGann again.. can’t we have an older doctor reincarnated ..
Wishaw a good man if he would pick up the role without risk of worrying he will be typecast.
Moffat has done stunningly well and for that he deserves a big GONG but creative writing is not an endless process.. the creators minds will eventually diminish.. and the plot lines and stories will come to an end. Think Father Ted, IT Crowd, even The Goon Show. Everything has it’s time.. maybe… just maybe even Dr Who has had it’s time…. just for now… give it a rest until the right hunger returns..
WHO knows… tapping his nose..
Ask for Colin Baker..

February 4th, 2017 - 11:28amPhilip, without sounding rude, but have u actually been watchin the show with Moffat as lead writer? His stories have been abysmal and like a lot of other viewers have said, we cant wait till he leaves. He has almost ruined the series.

February 4th, 2017 - 12:07pmDear Whovian
Ouch.. I was just trying to be generous. I couldn’t watch the shows as it wasn’t doing it for me from the actor point of view, so I couldn’t bear to hang in and did deeper and get to grips with the writing as you suggest.
Sorry to hear your comment about the lead writer.
I enjoyed watching the filming of Sea Devils where we lived in the Naval Base in Portsmouth and the gunnery range where we lived. Circa 1971..
Saying Hi to the original Master Roger Delgado..
Good story and good writing.
I look forward to the next phase of the story . We live in hope..

February 14th, 2017 - 11:24pmDear Philip and other contributors.
Perhaps tom Hollander of REV. I too have been watching since1963 so if I haven’t given up no one else should. This is an evolving story that with care should not end. However certain people at the BBC do not always understand this regardless of the merchandise and then it gets dumbed down and goes to sleep for a few decades. Do not let this happen

February 3rd, 2017 - 1:57pmAgreed I’m female and really don’t want a female doctor, we’ve had Missy and I’ve got fed up with her, Clara became bigger than the Doctor, hate series 9 ending, also didn’t like the character Me either, hated River, series 6 in particular.
The Outcast
February 3rd, 2017 - 2:14pmI agree with most of that. I hated Clara due to her being far to OP and while I don’t hate Missy, I feel she needs to stop being a Frienemy and do some evil e.g Search for ultimate power. And I have never understood the ‘Series 9 is a return to form/best series ever’ stuff. Only 3 stories were good UTL/BTF, FTR and Heaven Sent.

February 3rd, 2017 - 11:40pmI hate how we now have a good Dalek bumbling about somewhere, the doctor had a whole army of cyber men gifted to him so they’re now a friend, sontarans are now no longer a threat, the master is no longer a threat, Silurians are allies as well. I hate how Steven Moffat has dumbed down all these monsters and makes every storyline a huge ‘universe at stake’ plot rather than the kind of episodes we had with Russel T Davies. And nobody speaks like a normal person in Doctor Who anymore it feels like the whole script is written just to drum up some new quotes. I mean example A. “Where can he run?
“Where he always runs….(dramatic pause)…..away” I mean what’s all that about. Russel T Davies’ scripts felt real, especially Rose and 10 on the beach with neither not quite knowing what to say to the other. Gaaaahh I hope it improves with the new writer

The Outcast
February 4th, 2017 - 1:30amTo be fair to Moffat, I’ve always hated the romance plots that RTD introduced (well, continued). He’s an ALIEN. Not your grand-dad, not your boyfriend. Which is why I hate it when people say ‘Oh he loves (insert whoever here)’.
This is why I don’t mind a female Doctor. Especially if they get rid of all this ‘Love’ junk.
Doctor Stu
February 3rd, 2017 - 8:40amI’ve heard Ben Whishaw’s name thrown around and I think he’d be a
pretty good doctor, he’s got that quirkiness about him that we saw as Q in James Bond and he can handle emotional scenes well like in London Spy. Plus he’d be the first openly out actor to play the Doctor which is a big push in diversity but it may be time for a woman to take over as well. As long as that actor or actress is picked because they’re the right person for the job and not based on gender, colour, orientation etc because they you start to move into tokenism territory.

When The Doctor Was Me
January 31st, 2017 - 6:22pmAm I happy that he is standing down. No!
Do I think it needs to happen though… Yes!
I’m not happy his leaving so soon because I think the material he has had has been really poor. The quality of the episodes just has decreased so much. Capaldi is a hugely talented actor and he has only had a handful of amazing moments in who. Not because he has failed to find the character, but because the material limited him with what he could do. Hands down the best Capaldi moment was in the Zygon 2 parter with his speech on war and fighting. That was outstanding!
The reason I do think this is the right choice however is because I feel like ever since day one the show seems to have been apologising for casting an older actor. Moffat has failed to write decently for the show for a long time and I think its right to allow Chibnall a fresh start. Why? Because I think its unfair for him to write the character the way he wants to, under what has already been established in Moffats era, and complicating things. It is best for him to just start a fresh. Give us his Doctor and work from there.
Mr Capaldi it has been a pleasure having you in the role, but the odds were against you. You unfairly have become the Colin Baker of New Who. A title which is completely underserved, but you have been wronged with your material.
The Moffat Paradox
January 31st, 2017 - 8:27pmI’m half hoping that Capaldi changes his mind as what you are identifying here when things with Moffat have been below par is a systemic problem that would continue regardless of who is in the title role. Short of having our own Tardises only time will tell whether having Mr Chibnail at the creative helm is a good choice.
When The Doctor Was Me
January 31st, 2017 - 8:40pmI was hoping for Capaldi to stay on for at least series 11 just to see if the creative team change would help. However we are not going to see this.
I do think its a good idea for Chibnall to make the show his own from the start and not use a Doctor which has been established under a different reign. A clean slate and getting the show back on form is a huge priority for me.
Dalekparadigm2
January 31st, 2017 - 11:22pmI’m sort of hoping that this clean slate will be just that and that Bill, though new, will be similar to Martha or Donna and be in for just the one series…

February 1st, 2017 - 1:28pmcolin baker of the new who. Thats a bit harsh for both actors. Even though colin baker is the frustrated jobbing actor and to be honest an hasty choice he gave it is best shot even though the powers that be at the beeb wanted him out even though he was and still is committed to who. With capaldi , he was an already established film and tv star before who, so to draw comparison is a little unfair. I think it is the right time to leave as people say and they needed to start afresh for the forthcoming chibnall era due to flagging ratings.

January 31st, 2017 - 4:19pmI think Capaldi has been amazing but it doesn’t seem like 5 minutes since he took over. And to lose moffat to! They have both been wonderful to our show and I wish them all the very best for the future! But the future is bright under Chris Chibnall. Time for the next chapter to begin!
I have always been a fan of Adrian Lester and I think he would make a great doctor but also Amanda Abbington or Sian Brooke would be teriffic lady doctors!
The Surgeon
January 31st, 2017 - 4:18pmHe will always be down as one of the very best. You could tell he loved doing it and although some of his episodes were a bit hairy, it was always a pleasure to watch
The Other
January 31st, 2017 - 4:17pmNOOOOOOOOO!!! He’s easily the biggest waste of potential of all New Doctor Who – the finest actor to play the Doctor since 2005 and utterly ruined by Moffat’s terrible scripts. He could have easily been unquestionably the best Doctor of The Revival and quite possibly the best Doctor ever. Damn you for wasting him Moffat, I’ll never forgive you for that.
Here’s to Peter Capaldi – the greatest and most wasted Doctor New-Who ever had.
The Living Shadow
January 31st, 2017 - 8:46pmI totally agree. At least we have a few good episodes like ‘Heavent Sent’, and ‘Flatline’. Hopefully they’ll have some good stories for him in series 10…

February 1st, 2017 - 6:08pmI agree with you, although from what I’ve seen and heard, series 10 looks to be the best yet so might just make up for it!

February 5th, 2017 - 12:51amTotally in agreement with many others here . As the stories got more stupid and Clara more annoying my attention waned .Have been watching from behind the couch as a kid since the 60s , now I have my own couch to sit on 🙂 but not a good Dr Who story to get wrapped up in . Mr Capaldi gave me hope but has been let down by the dumbed down plots . Please please no more companions like Clara , who hits the Dr ? SPOILERS …., in tbe future someone might write a plot that continues the mystery ,strength ,intelligence and humour of a classic Dr Who episode without tacky Americanised TV plots and untypical behaviour . Thanks for all the years of fun and fantastic imaginings , more of the good stuff please or I am gone ….and please stay Mr Capaldi , a good script might just be a Tardis trip away .
