Philip Madoc 1934 – 2012

Philip Madoc 1934 – 2012

Philip Madoc Has died at the age of 77

He was a familiar face on British television appearing in many classic programmes.

Born in Merthyr Tydfil, he appeared in shows including Dad’s Army, Doctor Who and Porridge.

Philip Madoc appeared in the Peter Cushing film Daleks – Invasion Earth 2150 AD, in two 2nd Doctor stories The Krotons and The War Games and the 4th Doctor story The Power of Kroll.

For Doctor Who fans he is however perhaps best know for his role in the 4th Doctor story The Brain of Morbius.

He was also part of, perhaps, the funniest comedy scene of all time in Dads Army following on from the now immortal line “don’t tell him pike”.

Our own picture of Philip Madoc when we met him a couple of years ago – note Morbius in his top pocket…

I liked his portayal of Solon, the extreme doctor in Brain of Morbius, one of the most memorable characters in Dr Who to appear in just one episode.

I couldn’t really tell which of the tribesmen was him, in Power of Kroll. And then after that episode, he apparently gave up doing Dr Who roles, or something ? ❓

I remembered him as Chief Inspector Bains in Mind to Kill. He competed with Inspector Morse & other detective dramas. I seen him in a lot of Dr.Who episodes. He was once rumoured as the next Q in Skyfall but I’m glad in went to a younger man. He was great & never to be forgotten.

One of the best baddie actors Doctor Who has ever had. He had great menace and was also a great comic actor. A truely sad loss and my prays are with his family.

Philip Madoc was a truly great actor. For me he starred in two of the best stories in the entire history of Doctor Who ‘The War Games’ and ‘The Brain of Morbius’. Two outstanding performances in Two outstanding stories. He will be greatly missed.

Haven’t seen any episodes he was in but, like Doctor Who DVD Collector said, he sounded like a true legend. Will try and watch those stories he was in though.
