Revamped Theme Tune and Opening Title Sequence

Revamped Theme Tune and Opening Title Sequence

From The official site

Something cold, something new… Not only will we be treated to a ‘new’ TARDIS during The Snowmen (Christmas Day at 5.15pm), but the episode will premiere a revamped theme tune and opening title sequence.

We can’t give too much away about the new-look titles except to say they are wonderfully dramatic and striking, with a couple of unexpected touches. In short, they’re a perfect way to welcome back the Doctor!

And fans of the famous Doctor Who theme tune needn’t worry… This new arrangement remains true to the original, written by Ron Grainer back in 1963, but on Christmas Day you’ll hear it as it’s never sounded before. This latest version is more thrilling and powerful but retains that slightly scary quality that remains stirring no matter how many times you catch it.

To enjoy the revamped theme tune and opening title sequence, make sure you’re watching The Snowmen on BBC One, Christmas Day at 5.15pm.

But Doctor Who is a show that does not stand still. It’s constantly changing and evolving. 🙂

When you say 50th Anniversary logo, are you referring to the 70’s version with the 1st Doctor intro laid over it ?.

If so then I doubt it. That version is just for official 50th Anniversary merchandise.

Joe – Agreed, Doctor Who is about change, unless your one of them people who just won’t accept the truth that David Tennant is no longer the Doctor [seriously, those of you who won’t get over David Tennant – GET – OVER – HIM – NOW !!!!, so many of us are sick to death with the whole ‘BRING BACK DAVID TENNANT’ thing, your making yourselves look like scream loonies who adore guys like Justin Bieber and the 1 Direction…. yuck ! 😛 ]

I think the real reason is because unlike the Master, who appeared in many stories, the Rani only appeared twice in the classic series encountering the 6th and 7th Doctors in ‘The Mark of the Rani’ and ‘Time of the Rani’, and since I don’t think magazine like Doctor Who Adventures have probably talked much about her or never mentioned her at all, then she would not be very well known to a lot of todays younger viewers.

You say Rani to them, and they’d think of Rani Chandra from the Sarah Jane Adventures, not THE Rani.

Why does everyone think the TARDIS can only change when the Doctor regenerates?

  • joe

    December 17th, 2012 - 6:16pm

Because Doctor Who is about change. You have to embrace it with this show.
To be honest i am looking forward to a new title sequence, as i HATED what they did with Series 7.1 with different coloured logos each episode.

Hopefully this one will have a more ‘classic’ feel to it.

Personally I have no objection to a new title sequence and theme, hopefully it will be more in line with ones from the 60’s/70’s. However, I just don’t think that it can be classed as Series 7 Part 2, it’s going to be entirely different to the half-series that preceded it.

Whilst it does seem rather odd that we have THIS many changes during one series, it’s understandable. Next year is, as we should all know by now, the show’s 50th Anniversary, so it would seem wrong to not incorporate any changes to the titles etc.

Anybody else have a feeling they’ll use the 50th Anniversary logo? 😀

I think i read somewhere that moffat wasn’t going to bring back the rani for some reason. To be honest she’s like a rubbish female version of the master

Sadly for you Dazza, the Rani is not coming back. Ive just looked her up on Google, and came across an article from August this year on another Doctor Who website which I won’t bother to mention as this comment might end up just getting deleted, but the article is called ‘Why Moffat will not bring back the Rani’ and says –

Anyone hoping for the return of certain classic Doctor Who characters like the Rani or the Meddling Monk probably shouldn’t hold their breath. Steven Moffat has ruled them out because he feels they will be lost on casual viewers.

Moffat explained in the latest issue of SFX magazine that other characters like the Master were an exception: “Even people who don’t know the past very well get thrilled by the idea that you’ve brought something back. Everyone got very excited – and by everyone I mean real people – when the Master came back, even though most people could barely remember him.

He elaborated: “It has to be self-explanatory, it has to be free-standing, it has to be clear for everybody. If I did the Meddling Monk teaming up with Mavic Chen’s daughter and the Krotons then yeah, that’s too much, because no one gives a toss.”

He added: “People always ask me “Do you want to bring back the Rani?” No one knows who the Rani is. They all know who the Master is, they know Daleks, they probably know who Davros is, but they don’t know who the Rani is, so there’s no point in bringing her back. If there’s a line it’s probably somewhere there.””

What makes you think the Rani’s turning up next year ?.

Theres been no mention of her returning in series 7 part 2 as far as I’m aware.

Kate’s too old to play the Rani [sadly 🙁 ].

I would have either Terry Farrell [Jadzia Dax from Star Trek – Deep Space Nine] or Rosie Huntinton-Whitely [Carly Spencer from Transformers – Dark of the Moon] as a new incarnation of the Rani.

I’m just looking forward to The Rani turning up next year. That should be a good episode, be good to see who is playing her this time around, unless Kate OMara is finally going to agree to be her once more?

The reason clearly for the new intro, new theme and new Tardis console room is because as we all know 2013 is Doctor Whoth 50th / golden / half a century anniversary.

To be honest I don’t mind the changes Ive just mentioned, cos for one thing, the 2010 intro was ruined this year with the silly different appearances of the logo for this years 5 episodes which did not suit everyone, including the changes in colour to the time vortex in each of this years episodes as well.

I hope, instead of the name of the actor who plays the Doctor, they show their face like they did for the old ones

This is brilliant for the 50th, but why does it have to change all the time?!

  • The TARDIS

    December 17th, 2012 - 4:03pm

Undecided as to whether the whole changeover is annoying, just as we’ve started getting used to, or if it’s brilliant that we keep on getting new ideas in Who… I think it’s the second one.
My only worry is that this isn’t series 7 part 2, it’s an entirely different series. New costume, new TARDIS interior, new companion, new title sequence, new theme…

Strange, if you click ‘Official Site’, you just end up uploading this page.

I hope the new theme and intro will be close to the William Hartnell original, or something like it at least.

AARGH!! cant they just stay still!! matt smith should have the same title and TARDIS throughout his era, and it should be changed when he regenerates. we’ve just bought a new TARDIS playset!!!! and i think we’ve all judt got used to the new titles as well!
