The BBC has announced that the Doctor’s most famous foes, the Daleks, will return to Doctor Who in the show’s fiftieth anniversary special. We’ll bring you more news about the adventure as it emerges, but for now, here’s the latest press release in full:

MATT SMITH, DAVID TENNANT AND JOHN HURT TO FACE OFF AGAINST DALEKS IN 50th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL

The Doctors, Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt will battle the deadly Daleks, the BBC announces today, in the show’s 50th anniversary special.

Returning to BBC One on 23 November the highly anticipated adventure will star: Matt Smith; Jenna Coleman; David Tennant; Billie Piper; John Hurt and Joanna Page. In a surprise twist in the recent series finale it was revealed John Hurt would be playing a Doctor, alongside Smith and Tennant.

The Daleks are the second monster to be announced for the 50th and will join the shape shifting Zygons, which have only appeared in the show once before in 1975. The Daleks were one of the first monsters to terrify audiences in 1963, 50 years ago, cementing their place in British popular culture.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, said:

“The Doctor once said that you can judge a man by the quality of his enemies, so it’s fitting that for this very special episode, he should be facing the greatest enemies of all.”

The 50th anniversary episode was shot earlier this year at BBC Cymru Wales’ Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff and across South Wales. Filming also took place in iconic London locations the Tower of London and Trafalgar Square for a huge stunt, which saw Matt Smith dangling from a TARDIS alongside Nelson’s Column.

he is apparently meant be the 9th doctor just after the 8th , im not quite sure but I read this somewhere, they described that if he was the 9th doctor then David tenant would of been the 11th and matt smith would be the 12, it also commented saying that it would contradict its self so the bbc have decided to make the doctor immortal to carry on the show but like I said im not sure I just read this 🙂

Don’t be surprised if the 50th “special ” is really a damp squib and if the kind of things your talking about cant get fitted in outside of it being discussed by the characters.

But that’s not the same thing as seeing it outside of our imaginations and would probably require an episode about as long as the whole special is going to be it all to itself with a ton of money for the set/effects to do it justice.

Thinking about it, curtain questions concerning the Time War might finally be answered after all these years, like “What exactly was the Nightmare Child ?”, and “What exactly was ‘The Cruciform’ the Master himself was resurrected to protect before the Emperor Dalek took control over it ?”.

I for one would love to see new version of Romana appear in the 50th Anniversary, leading her people against the Daleks before Rassilon took over, and see Davros’s command ship fly into the jaws of the Nightmare Child, leaving us knowing full well that he survives and ends up in the series 4 finale.

Plus we could see also the creation of the Cult of Skaro by the Emperor Dalek himself 😉

if they include two classic doctors.
The Eighth Doctor as he’s had little screen time.
    and..
the Fourth Doctor as he’s the most iconic doctor.

  • The Valeyard.

    July 29th, 2013 - 12:26pm

So far nobody has posted the trailer online as at Comic Con, they were told that if anyone posted the trailer online there would be no more exclusives at Comic Con again.

It believed to be the 8th as he had meant to be filmed something, I think it might be the regen from 8 to 9 with John hurt appearing in between the regen or like the 4ths regen when John hurt walks into Paul’s doctor and regens into the 9th eccolston (with eccston being footage from his series)

Besides the trailer screening controversy surely revealing whose the 12th Doctor should be imminent?

I thought production of the Christmas Special and Series 8 had to get started from round about now?

    Two things:

    1.) */If/ we see the trailer… (Though I /really/ hope we do!)
2.) Some people can’t afford to make it over to America and SDCC and also, life gets in the way. Some people could probably afford it but had things planned for those dates, things happened at the last minute… Or school. School is a vital issue for younger Whovians, like myself.

    That’s all! 🙂

the Radio Times talks about the possibility of one of the Doctors from the classic series [4,5,6,7 or 8] making an appearance in the 50th Anniversary Special.
