What did you Think of Asylum of The Daleks?
What did you Think of Asylum of The Daleks
The first episode of series 7a has finally aired so what did you think?, was it the best episode ever or just average. Vote below.
Matt Smith returns as the oldest time-traveller in the universe. The Time Lord, Amy and Rory are kidnapped by their oldest foe the Daleks and forced on a seemingly impossible mission β to enter the Asylum, a planetary prison confining the most terrifying and insane of the deadly aliensβ kind.
From the official site…
Steven Moffat, Head Writer and Executive Producer, thanked fans and the press for keeping the secret:
βI hope you all got a nice surprise when Jenna popped up in Doctor Who several months early. If so, that surprise came to you courtesy of the frankly magnificent ladies and gentlemen of the press, and of the many Doctor Who forums and blogs too. This show has been seen at four separate screenings, across four different countries and yet not one person gave one spoiler. From all of us on Doctor Who, a heartfelt thank you for helping us tell our story.β

September 2nd, 2012 - 12:03amMoffats Dr Who is a strange series: sure it’s watchable, but one minute it’s rewriting or simply overlooking what came before with Davies’ Doctor, the next it’s embracing it!!
The Daleks were almost extinct, now they thrive!:
David Tennants Doc, or rather his part-human clone destroyed Davros & the Daleks- all Daleks were blowing up as were ALL the ships-
yet Moffats first Dalek outing- one ship survived completely intact….
no explanation.
That story gave us the “Pure” Daleks (or the pretty coloured telly-tubby Daleks!)- who promptly destroyed the “inferior” impure Daleks, yet this episode: they’re back….
no explanation.
Daleks have fought & destroyed other Daleks before (see above!!)- yet the asylum planet existed because they couldn’t destroy inferior/defect Daleks??
The Timewar seems to have all but been forgotten now: Skaro should surely be time-locked??- for that matter, surely the Dalek asylum would have been too?, yet there was Skaro….
no explanation.
Davies’ Docs BOTH showed a hatred & fear of the Daleks, even when faced with just 1 or 2, Smith’s Doctor seems largely unphased by them (ok- he was scared at ONE point!)- despite the fact the Daleks are somehow once again a force in the thousands, if not more!!….
no explanation.
Ok: that’s my Dalek moaning done- the story itself!:
Title sequence: crap! & what’s with “Doctor Who” written in ‘studded’ letters??
Rory & Amy divorce story- pointless & did nothing for the plot.
Classic Daleks must have been on while I blinked- cos after the hype, I caught mere glimpses!!
New assistant being killed before BEING an assistant?- borrowed straight outta the River Song playbook!
Insane Daleks borrowed right out of the Dalek Kahn playbook- & the Clara Dalek in chains… right outta the episode “Dalek” in the first series!!
Daleks forgetting the Doctor- WHY??, they now have an ARMADA, & they’ll soon remember him again when they go about their primary purpose of destroying all other life & he has to stop them again!!
Daleks made more scarey again… ummm, NO!
Infact, on that subject- I remember the last series being touted as the darkest, scariest yet….. it simply wasn’t!!: Tennants Doc got to be pretty dark & scarey, Eccleston’s Doc was darker still!
Mr Moffat- if you ever read these: you are a great individual story writer!!- The Weeping Angels truly are scarey & brilliant!!, but as head of the series, you’re not a patch on Russell!!- your stories ignore the Davies era one minute then nod to it the next, they even contradict themselves!!, & PLEASE, for the love of god: let the departure of Amy & Rory also mean the PERMANENT departure of River bloody Song!!

September 3rd, 2012 - 7:49pmThanks for the comments guys, this is purely my opinion of course, & I think it’s safe to say that opinion on Asylum of the Daleks, & on the whole: Moffats series’ & style compared to Davies at the helm have greatly divided opinion across the board!
Esterath: I’m not saying Moffats Dr Who isn’t watchable & enjoyable- it just doesn’t often tie in with previous stories or plots- especially in the case of the Daleks & the time war!

September 1st, 2012 - 11:51pmI felt like I should have enjoyed it more than I did…too many niggles…I thought Skaro had been destroyed, why would the dr want to help the daleks..why was the ending so rushed!Must admit the trailer for next weeks episode looks good though!

September 1st, 2012 - 11:28pmA great ep and jenna appearing was a shock and surprise. A few things confusd me; where did the bronze daleks and dalek sec come from? The daleks have never seemd to hav clear storylines and some times just apear and we dnt knw what time they are from and how they are alive! Also what happend to the paradigm daleks and did the doctor just let them live. Also amy and rory seemd to be hardly in it at the end. And also im stil confusd by the whole series 5 and 6 story arc. The silence blew up the tardis? The tardis made the cracks in time? Why did the silent want an astronaut suit? Why not kil the doctor themselfs? Also poor amy cant have kids? Bit grown up 4 a family drama. Otherwise a great episode!

September 1st, 2012 - 10:46pmSo, just out of interest – did anyone tick off all the daleks on the radio times ‘dalek bingo’ game?
John Smith
September 1st, 2012 - 10:40pmBefore I start I just want to say, in words that everyone can understand, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TITLES? Why couldn’t they just leave them as they were? They’re boring now. Anyway, it was a good episode but not quite worth the wait. I think the machine that turns people into Daleks was right off and they should of pursued a more Revelation of the Daleks type of story. The classic Daleks were barely in it at all and the RTD Daleks were in it much to commonly. Although I did get quite a suprise when Clara turned up a few months early! But yeah, it was a fairly good episode although they did a terrible job on making the Daleks scary again and thats my final word on the matter.

September 2nd, 2012 - 12:11amI was looking forward to this episode for quite awhile, knowing the fact that Steven was ruining history and creating plot holes all over the place. And having Thought Caroline was brought in to stop him doing it again, what happens? he does it again, I tried to make sense of ‘Victory of the Daleks’ with my ‘Dalek Tales: The Dalek That Time Forgot’.. but I cant help this.
The opening on Skaro was nice I liked that but as soon as he mentioned ‘ the parliament of the Daleks’ I cringed.. why not call it ‘consulate of the Daleks’ its sounds better, and as for the Dalek Prime minister what’s wrong with Dalek Prime. it was a good episode better than some years that have past but things were so wrong, the Dalek “replicates” should have just been human Daleks as it has been since the 70’s no need for silly Dalek eye stalks popping out(made me laugh).
The asylum started brilliantly dormant, creepyness with the Daleks slowly awakening, but calling them insane when they looked like they needed a pack of Duracell’s shoved in them is hardly crazed and insane. There was no effort in the entire asylum, I would have had the Doctor and Amy trying to get past the insane Daleks without alerting them to get to the exit, you know suddenly spotting a Special Weapons Dalek coming by and telling Amy to shut up before alerting them and the whole place turning into a war fair with the SWD blowing up Daleks and whatever in its sight. having Rory being chased by a Dalek down a corridor before pushing it down a shaft or something just to make it a bit more interesting and dramatic.
But the one biggest ever cock ups was when the Doctor was reaching Intensive Care and was told that the Daleks in there are from Exillon, Spiridon, kemble and so on… i really thought yey here come some classics (something that i only noticed two of at this point) but NO what do we see more NSD’s and from what I remember they weren’t in those events.
so I’ve prattled on about how i really don’t like what they have done for the first time in my life I might add (and I could mention the Daleks sudden amnesia, what on earth is the point of that they will only work it out at some point)I think it’s a big improvement on what has happened in the past few years story wise but I think they really need a new Producer someone who is in love with it like Russell T Davies, before Steven becomes another John Nathan Turnner.
Oh and Why change the titles to something so blurred and obscure, if its not broke don’t fix it… Shutting up now π

September 1st, 2012 - 10:48pmWell, I’m guessing they didn’t show them that much due to over complicated plots. But Steven Moffat hasn’t payed much attention to them previously. E.g series 6 and the last few episodes of series 5. But I’m guessing that it will be fun to see how things will turn out for the rest of the series.

September 1st, 2012 - 10:11pmi enjoyed the episode but it defiantly could have been better. the story line was a bit obvious. the whole amy and rory break up is a bit un believable. and the things that changes people into darleks where a bit silly in my opinion, it really seems a bit to much like the cybermen to me.
one think i dont get… why did the darlek girl’s voice sound like a humans on the intercoms (or whatever)? ohh and why doesn’t the doctor need a bracelet thing (mighta just not been listening at that point)
but it was an entertaining episode π

September 1st, 2012 - 10:06pmI thought every type of dalek was going to be in the episode, so I am very disappointed, I am also disappointed that the classics didn’t say a word.
It was a good episode but not as good as it was made out to be.
PS: I think it would be good if the classics returned with a bigger role, as well as classic cybermen.

September 1st, 2012 - 9:51pmdisapointed…..not enought classic daleks.
Arnt rory and amy bieng converted into dalek puppets? That wasnt resolved.
Expected lots of classic dalek action. Was suprised to see DALEK SEC and a NEW WHITE SUPREME in the assylum. confusing.
Get the Doctor who? theme, everyone will forget him. WHY OH WHY have they still not answered the loose threads from season 5 and six yet?
Who blew up the tardis? who was the voice when that happened? who built the silence time machine? How can skaro still exist after rememberence? Was the dalek in the jar the emperor? Was he labour or conservative? (ignore that sad attempt of a joke)
SonictheHedgehog
September 1st, 2012 - 9:54pmI keep having to tell alot of people this, XD! Skaro was destroyed in the Time War, along with Gallifrey. The planet in Remembrance was a decoy, and if you read a book called War of the Daleks, it will explain to you what actually happened. It’s a great book!
The Moffat Paradox
September 1st, 2012 - 10:07pmBut that’s the problem. Its from a book and unless their incorporated into plots in an actual series their not canon.
SonictheHedgehog
September 1st, 2012 - 10:18pmWell, for one, War of the Daleks takes place directly after Remembrance, showing how Davros coped being alone in an escape pod. Actually, it’s either this book, or Terror Firma, the Big Finish Audio, that takes place right after Remembrance. Both feature the 8th Doctor anyway, and both feature Davros being in an escape pod.
The Moffat Paradox
September 1st, 2012 - 11:00pmYes but its still not canon. Someone else could write a different and equally valid/entertaining post Rememberance story but its still not part of the plot/back story in the actual offical series unless it gets used and specifically referred to.
It’s just like Star Trek novels. There are literally hundreds of those and while Doctor Who/Star Trek novels might entertain you and satisfy any question marks in the back of your head about plots from the offical series and movies unless the actual scriptwriters use the plots from these stories as with Paul Cornell’s Doctor Who novel “Human Nature” in Season 3 it’s still not canon.
You write a Doctor Who story that gets made into an episode.Thats canon. Its whether their altogether consistent within canon thats at issue.
doctor doctor
September 2nd, 2012 - 12:16ampeter raised some good questions, and did you notice the left handed daleks 5 mins 15 secs into the show and when rory moved the dalek eye,17mins 45secs in, watch the light on the dalek go comeback and go and comeback! and i think sonic should read some other books, how may time has he said down the page “its a decoy” stop tell everyone, books are not part of the proper tv timeline.
SonictheHedgehog
September 2nd, 2012 - 12:26amAh, then you’ll be quite interested to know that before War of the Daleks became a book, it was set to be a 4-part TV episode. Obviously, this all fell apart, when the 1996 movie didn’t take off very well in the states, leading to the possible 8th Doctor Series to be cancelled. So, instead of scrapping the script, John Peel turned it into a book, to go along with the 8th Doctor Adventures line.

The Moffat Paradox
September 1st, 2012 - 9:34pmA good story, recorded it while watching and will watch again before deleting.
Agree though that we didn’t really see much of the classic Daleks (what was the point unless any designs remaining from classic series were also going to be seen in action?) and how come the ones that were supposed to be veterans from Vulcan, Spiridon and Exxilon were seemingly mostly all in Time War Dalek casing?
Also why as discussed are there even Time War Daleks at all other than in the Asylum when the Paradigm ones are supposed to consider the an inferior mutated subspecies unless they are pure DNA Daleks In Time War Dalek casing serving as the infantry? Not explained.
Skaro back when Destoyed by 7th Doctor using Hand Of Omega also not explained although as has been discussed before time lines might not necessarily be 100% the same after events in “Big Bang” finale to Season 5.
Why do Daleks even need a Parliament and a Prime Minister? They are supposed to be the ultimate metaphor for the Nazis in sci-fi with an Emperor/Dalek Supreme(If not Davros) as their “fuhrer.” The average Dalek you would think is not their to really reason too much about overall tactics/strategy but to exterminate and just totally obey their commanders orders.
Maybe we will see more of them towards the end of series 7 (this might just be a warm up) but agree that as usual the expectations generated didn’t quite fully match what we actually saw. While visually it was VERY IMPRESSIVE with good effects. Liked the touch with the Dalekised human drones.
REAL Dalek action though would be to see them slugging it out in a full scale war with opposing force(s)in space and ground offensives.(As implied by the actual Time War itself.)
But you would need more than 50 minutes so a 2 part story if not in an actual movie one day.
SonictheHedgehog
September 1st, 2012 - 9:51pmLike I explained to someone previously, Skaro wasn’t destroyed in Remembrance. Rather, that planet was a decoy. If you read War of the Daleks, it explains it all.

September 2nd, 2012 - 4:45amI believe that was the Supreme Council, and the Doctor was putting it in terms that Amy and Rory would understand better, and the human called it Prime Minister because that’s what she was familiar with. I believe the “Prime Minister” is the Emperor

The TARDIS
September 1st, 2012 - 9:18pmA really good episode, spoiled by 3 major flaws:
1: Why introduce a new Dalek paradigm only to bring back the Daleks they replaced? Anyway, all of the Gold Daleks were destroyed.
2: Skaro was destroyed in Remembrance of the Daleks. And that was a part of the cause of the Time War, which was when the Gold Daleks were created.
3: The Daleks would NEVER forget the Doctor. They have only two emotions – hate and fear. And they only have them because they hate and fear the Doctor. It’s not possible they’d forget him.
Anyway, I’m focusing on the negatives! It was a great episode. I really enjoyed it.
SonictheHedgehog
September 1st, 2012 - 9:19pmSkaro wasn’t destroyed in Remembrance. It was a decoy, and was actually destroyed along with Gallifrey, in the Time War. The book, War of the Daleks, explains this clever plot device perfectly.

September 2nd, 2012 - 4:49amI only believe in the actual epiodes as canon, and I think Skaro was fried and almost destroyed, but the Daleks probably had a forcefield that barely saved it, and probably created a second sun, being as clever as they are, and Daleks have hate and fear because Davros removed all other emotions when he created them
