What Did You Think of The Rings of Akhaten?

What Did You Think of The Rings of Akhaten?

Having found himself a new companion in the shape of Clara Oswald, the Doctor asks where she wants to go first – and her request for somewhere awesome takes the pair to the rings of the planet Akhaten, inhabited by all manner of amazing creatures.

Clara meets the young queen, who is about to take part in a ceremony called the Festival of Offerings – but what begins as a happy sing-song soon turns very grim. Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman star.

Now that the 2nd episode of series 7b has aired in the UK what did you think?, was it the best episode ever or just average.

I disagree, I think the show started spiraling into something that wasn’t quite Doctor Who since Series 2 (Farting aliens, aliens made from fat…), but Series 5 made me start to get back into Doctor Who. Also, Matt Smith is my favorite Doctor.

He’s travelled through time and space for 1,000 years. He’s seen the beginning and end of the universe, Daleks, Cybermen, Time Wars, godlike beings, and many more things beyond what anyone on that planet could imagine. He assumed that he could overload the Old God, and thus, destroy it.

    Agree with you completely.
All of the doctors through the years have been fantastic for different reasons, but the 11th is the worst ever. I only liked one or two episodes from series 5, hated series 6 and was very disappointed by Asylum of the daleks, ( where was all the classics?)Most of series 7a was not very good either. BBC sack the writer and make the 11th doctor grow up.

Really? For me it sort of got increasingly turgid.

While I can agree that this is among the worst episodes yet to be churned out, I don’t think that the lack of a big scary guy in a rubber suit was the deciding factor. For me, it was more the gaping plot holes that were the problem. Why not start with the fact that the Doctor has condemned all those people to die because without that planet/sun (that was a but unclear) they have nothing to orbit around, and therefore they will drift off into space without its gravitational pull and die of hypothermia when they get too far away from the nearest heat source?

Disappointing after last weeks opener. Overblown. The singing was sleep inducing. Even all those wonderfully strange aliens couldn,t detract from this lacking in scares or tension. Looking forward to mark gatiss’ story. Hopefully a return to form next week.

Am I the only one who’s bothered by the fact that the only thing the Doctor could think to do when faced with a huge parasite was to give it what it wanted? I mean, really? The people on the planet had already thought of that one.

Yes, but by that logic, if anything, didn’t happen the way it did, the world wouldn’t be the way it was. If everything is cause and effect (and let’s just forget about quantum physics and progability waves for a moment) then everything that happens is a tiny, equal part of dictating what futures do or do not happen. There was nothing special about that leaf (or more special than anything else, anyway) except the symbolic meaning that Clara and her parents gave it, and that’s only to them.

It’s much more menacing and creepy hissing, I would have preferred them not to be guards of the mummy ad then they can return!

He wrote the bells of st john and the finale, but the rest are other writers, he didn’t write this story and there always has to be some episodes that are not as good as others.
I don’t see what everyone is going crazy about, it was meant to be a introduction to Clara and about her first adventure, if they are all almost killed on their first trip, a normal person may not continue travelling with him, as she has people she cares about at home
Also Dr who is meant to be just a tv show to entertain for 45 minutes, it’s grown to be so much more but at heart it’s still just a tv show and you can’t expect a perfect, movie style epic episode every week that everyone will love! And it did just that, entertain, if you moan about every episode, than don’t watch!

Maybe it knows she can’t exist or that and is asort of paradox!

It’s not actually a rip off of the pharaoh. Akhenaten means living spirit of Aten, so Akhaten actually means living God, which I think is really clever!

I second that! However it’s the Ice Warriors next week so let’s all hope that it goes well, unlike the silurian’s comeback. I’m just annoyed that it stares The 11th Doctor and Clara, neither one of them has impressed me.

It was an off screen adventure, the Doctor does it all the time, has since the beginning. Usually it contradicts with other things also, (ie all the meetings with Shakespeare alluded too over the years!)

There was far too much singing for me. And surely, when all the aliens joined in the song, they should have sounded like a crowd of aliens with grunts and squeaks and woofs. It would probably have sounded daft to have done that, but would possibly have been more believable. Instead they sounded like an ordinary English choir (which is what they were).

So, generally, I don’t rate the story very highly, although visually it looked very good. But just think back a two or three decades or so – you could have a naff story that would last for four whole weeks or more. At least now you can always look forward to next week’s story.
