Doctor Who 50th anniversary schedule revealed by BBC

The BBC has announced a raft of programmes to mark the 50th anniversary of the first episode of Doctor Who.

A 75-minute special episode called The Day Of The Doctor will star the soon-to-leave Matt Smith and David Tennant.

Smith said: “Hope you all enjoy. There’s lots more coming your way.”

Other highlights include a BBC Two lecture by Professor Brian Cox on the science behind the hit show and the drama An Adventure In Space and Time, written by Mark Gatiss.

The one-off programme stars David Bradley – known to millions for his role as Filch in the Harry Potter films – as William Hartnell, who played the first Doctor in 1963.

BBC Four will introduce new audiences to Hartnell, with a re-run of the first ever story. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.

BBC Two’s flagship arts programme The Culture Show is to present Me, You and Doctor Who, with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC’s longest running TV drama.

A 90-minute documentary on BBC Radio 2 will ask “Who Is The Doctor?” – using newly-recorded interviews and exclusive archive material to find an answer.

For those less familiar with the show, Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide will provide a handy primer.

Danny Cohen, BBC director of television, said: “It’s an astonishing achievement for a drama to reach its 50th anniversary.

“I’d like to thank every person – on both sides of the camera – who has been involved with its creative journey over so many years.”

Smith has already started filming his final scenes as the Doctor, which are due to air in this year’s Christmas episode. His replacement, Scots actor Peter Capaldi, was announced in August.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer on Doctor Who, said: “50 years has turned Doctor Who from a television show into a cultural landmark. Personally I can’t wait to see what it becomes after a hundred.”

CBBC will broadcast a show, 12 Again, bringing together stars to share their memories of Doctor Who.

They include the seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, Tommy Knight, who played Luke Smith in The Sarah Jane Adventures, Warwick Davis, who played Porridge in a Doctor Who episode and Louise Jameson, who was the fourth Doctor Tom Baker’s companion Leela.

Blue Peter is launching a competition giving viewers aged between six and 14 the opportunity to design a new gadget that will become part of the series and Matt Smith will appear on the Blue Peter sofa to answer viewers’ questions.

BBC Three audiences will be encouraged to get involved and vote in Doctor Who: Monsters and Villains Weekend.

They’ve filmed it in 3D which means you can watch it in either 2D on BBC1 or 3D on a separate channel.

I don’t think it was a love triangle. It’s probably something more with how The Master got the sound in his head and went a bit crazy from it, making him evil and angry, even towards his friends. :3

In the episode Dalekthe ninth doctor statesd that the daleks burned, which must mean that the moment is fire, or sme sort of explosion. Also if the doctors do indeed go back into the time war then it could mean the possible return of the master.

To me, it does look like something the Doctor might wear. It suits him very well too, and he really does look like he’s been fighting a war.

The Doctor probably invited his last group of companions before his death because they were the ones he knew he was going to travel with before he died. He brought Rory because his wife was there and he probably didn’t want to endanger any companions, he only brought Rory and people who owed him favors. The Great Intelligence only met Jamie, Victoria, Jenny, Vastra, and Strax, and since Jamie and possibly Victoria would have been dead by then, he kidnapped the closest of those to the current incarnation of the Doctor.

Matt Smith will leave in the Christmas Special. David Tennant is returning in the 50th Anniversary Special. We’re fairly sure Tennant isn’t in the Christmas Special.

She only needed to save the Doctors up to the Eleventh, as far as I could tell. Otherwise she’d see the future, which, as we know, is extremely dangerous.

The Second Doctor claimed he was “bored” and fed up with the Time Lord’s unwillingness to explore the universe. I believe his secret is how he ended the Time War. We all know he ended it using something called The Moment, but we have no idea what The Moment was or how it killed the Time Lords and Daleks.

you know Jack can grow his body back, right? Don’t ask me how he becomes a big head in a jar (hey, maybe that’s just what age does to you!) but its always likely it could have been from jack. The only problem: Jacks manipulator had a cover on it. The only time River ever has a manipulator with a cover on it is in the angels take Manhattan. So probably not :/

I’m glad it’s not true because Tom Baker looks absolutely nothing like the 4th Doctor anymore….his appearance would be a gimmick….as would any of the remaining actors prior to Paul McGann. Peter Davison only JUST got away with it in Time Crash because they explained his ageing and it was all tongue n cheek anyway. Tom, Peter, Colin and Sylvester were childhood icons….but they should now only ever stick to Audio.

clara jumped into the doctor’s time stream, so she should have seen all of the doctor’s faces, even the future ones. which means that if she remembers all the versions of herself, she should also recognise capaldi’s doctor. but then she says ‘ive seen all your faces, 11 doctors’ which means she didn’t see all of the doctor’s time stream :/

But we didnt really see what the ninth doctor was doing before he met rose because he just appeared out of the blue and saved her so this could have happened before he met her

doctor stu, they only kidnapped vastra, jenny and strax because they were the friends that the great intelligence met in The Snowmen.

  • Doctor Stu

    September 17th, 2013 - 11:45pm

I’ve always thought, when ever the doctor meets new companions, the other companions kind of get forgotton. For example when the Doctor is raising army for demons run, he invites characters that have been in the previous episodes the series and when he invited people to his death it was just amy Rory and river but why not Martha or mickey (the companions that are still on earth and not parrallel earths or Donnas situation) also in the synopses of one of the epsiodes (can’t remember exactly which because series 7 part 2 wasn’t very memorable for me) it said (someone is kidnapping the doctors friends etc:)something along those lines so why was it only vastra, Jenny and Strax and not Martha, mickey, Sarah Jane etc: surely it would be easier to track doown companions from the present than to trawl back in time and kidnap vastra Jenny and Strax. It just seems that as the series continues old faces are forgotton.
