Doctor Who 50th anniversary schedule revealed by BBC

The BBC has announced a raft of programmes to mark the 50th anniversary of the first episode of Doctor Who.

A 75-minute special episode called The Day Of The Doctor will star the soon-to-leave Matt Smith and David Tennant.

Smith said: “Hope you all enjoy. There’s lots more coming your way.”

Other highlights include a BBC Two lecture by Professor Brian Cox on the science behind the hit show and the drama An Adventure In Space and Time, written by Mark Gatiss.

The one-off programme stars David Bradley – known to millions for his role as Filch in the Harry Potter films – as William Hartnell, who played the first Doctor in 1963.

BBC Four will introduce new audiences to Hartnell, with a re-run of the first ever story. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.

BBC Two’s flagship arts programme The Culture Show is to present Me, You and Doctor Who, with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC’s longest running TV drama.

A 90-minute documentary on BBC Radio 2 will ask “Who Is The Doctor?” – using newly-recorded interviews and exclusive archive material to find an answer.

For those less familiar with the show, Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide will provide a handy primer.

Danny Cohen, BBC director of television, said: “It’s an astonishing achievement for a drama to reach its 50th anniversary.

“I’d like to thank every person – on both sides of the camera – who has been involved with its creative journey over so many years.”

Smith has already started filming his final scenes as the Doctor, which are due to air in this year’s Christmas episode. His replacement, Scots actor Peter Capaldi, was announced in August.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer on Doctor Who, said: “50 years has turned Doctor Who from a television show into a cultural landmark. Personally I can’t wait to see what it becomes after a hundred.”

CBBC will broadcast a show, 12 Again, bringing together stars to share their memories of Doctor Who.

They include the seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, Tommy Knight, who played Luke Smith in The Sarah Jane Adventures, Warwick Davis, who played Porridge in a Doctor Who episode and Louise Jameson, who was the fourth Doctor Tom Baker’s companion Leela.

Blue Peter is launching a competition giving viewers aged between six and 14 the opportunity to design a new gadget that will become part of the series and Matt Smith will appear on the Blue Peter sofa to answer viewers’ questions.

BBC Three audiences will be encouraged to get involved and vote in Doctor Who: Monsters and Villains Weekend.

I doubt it, it would mean erasing a lot of his and RTD’s work. If people thought wiping the Daleks’ memories in Asylum of the Daleks was erasing history (Which it isn’t, because it still happened and the Doctor remembers it), then that would really show them screwing with Doctor Who’s history.

It would be nice to have a full season. 2-4-6 ep stories. same title, ep 1 -6 etc. I really hate this new format. Genesis of the Daleks was one of the best 6 parters of all time.

Take it you’ve never seen the three Doctors(Omega), or the Five Doctors(Rasalon). They can have their time streams cross if the Timelords deem it. Or if they are pulled together. I still feel the 50th will be a Mawdryn Undead style episode, shame sarah and the brig, won’t be in it. Plus why didn’t SM want McCory or McGain in this? They still look young enough to play their Doctors. As a fan since 1973, I have issuses with the show since SM took over. I honestly think Sherlock means more to him. Stomping

So, by the look of the poster, everything stems back to Rose opening the eye. Could SM be resetting the Who universe?(i.e before CE???). So DT, MS, never happened? Plus I still say that Jon Hurt is Omega.

    September 27th, 2013 - 10:42pm

do you think the cybermen are in the 50th anniversary or not? what do you guys think are they in it?

  • Dalek The Supreme

    September 26th, 2013 - 2:20pm

I’m American, but I can’t afford to go to Comic Con, and while the poster, length title, etc. are nice, a trailer still would have been nicer. Still, you just have to take what you can in life, I guess.

  • Dalek The Supreme

    September 26th, 2013 - 2:17pm

Yes, but we don’t know for sure. Besides, why would the Silence try to save the universe from the Doctor, by blowing it up? Seems more like something the GI would do at this point.

  • Dalek The Supreme

    September 26th, 2013 - 2:08pm

It still would be great to see New Daleks vs New Cybermen before they change one of them again. Both have been seen to be more powerful than the previous design, even if one was unpopular enough to be shoved behind their predecessor’s. I’d like to see a more even fight, as Daleks shouldn’t be able to just slaughter Cybermen like humans, but Cybermen shouldn’t just tear down Daleks with ease. Both are highly powerful and extremely advanced, and are more than a match for eachother.

  • Dalek The Supreme

    September 26th, 2013 - 2:05pm

It would be interesting, but I’m thinking IF they show it, they’ll just use the 2005-2010 TARDIS, or maybe if we’re very VERY lucky, the 1996 one.

  • Dalek The Supreme

    September 26th, 2013 - 2:04pm

It’s just a theory. For all we know, it could be The Moment, his Sonic Screwdriver, or something else entirely.

  • the astronaut of death

    September 25th, 2013 - 7:24am

I wonder if we will get to see a john hurt tardis.

The doctors got it now too so the zygons may
Need it to kill doctor and the humans and all
