The Doctors will return at Christmas
The closing moments of this evening’s Doctor Who series ten finale revealed that this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special will be a multi-Doctor adventure featuring the current Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and the First Doctor (David Bradley).
The cliff-hanger ending saw the Doctor fatally shot by a Mondasian Cyberman and begin to regenerate. Stepping out of the TARDIS into an arctic landscape, he fought off the glowing regeneration energy and fell to his knees, vowing that this time he would not live on and change into a new Doctor.
This was declared ‘ridiculous’ by an approaching figure, who mocked the Doctor as he stepped forward through the snow to reveal himself as the very first incarnation of the Timelord (“The original, you might say”) just before the credits rolled. The story will continue at Christmas.
Further casting and details for the Doctor Who Christmas special will be revealed in due course. As previously announced, the special will serve as Peter Capaldi’s farewell to the series, and will feature the debut of the next Doctor.

July 16th, 2017 - 4:59pmSo this Is my last episode for the foreseeable future…Gutted. Just as the show finished airing the best season, it delivers the worst news.
Tim M
July 17th, 2017 - 7:01pmThis is the reason why Moffat has brought the 12th and 1st Doctors together in his last episode. He’s basically saying to the fans “here is your first and last male Doctor…from now it’s female”. Moffat putting a nail inside Doctor Who’s coffin, and Chibnall hammering it in.
12th Doctor Fan
July 20th, 2017 - 9:51pmAgree with you and Tim M, our doctor has been castrated.
David
August 10th, 2017 - 10:58pmWell The Master regenerated into Missy, a female, and not to many people liked that, so how will people and long time fans like myself take to a female Doctor? Not to well. How will all the Doctor’s female companions, including his wife, Dr. River Song, take to the Doctor regenerating to a female?
IMHO, I think they want to kill the show! I am hopeing this is just a publicity stunt and when it returns in 2018, Peter Capaldi will be back! This is Steven Moffat signature with the Doctor. David Tennant started to regenerate and didn’t change. Then with Matt Smith, as he was regerating, the astronaut shot him before he finished, but that was only a robot. I hope that this is the same for Peter Cataldi’s Doctor.
IMHO, I think that Peter Capaldi is the best actor to play the Doctor because he has a little bit of the first eleven Doctors rolled up into one, plus a little of his own!
IMHO, I would like to see Peter Capaldi tie or break Tom Backer’s eight years as the Doctor. That will give Matt Strevens time to figure out how to give the Doctor another regeneration cycle!
I hope I’m right, I’ve been a fan since 1980 when Doctor Who was broadcast on Public Broadcasting Service in the US on Saturday nights.

The Moffat Paradox
November 23rd, 2017 - 12:18amAnd Chibnall is still noticeable in his absence in giving any TV/online interviews to even seek to justify his decisions.

Doctor Stu
July 12th, 2017 - 12:23pmSo Capaldi has finished his run, Moffatt has left and the Christmas special has wrapped but Chibnall is still ‘on the hunt’ for the next doctor so does this mean we’ll get the obligatory regenerating energy emitting from the hands and face and then the episode just ends without showing us who the new Doctor is and a casting announcement made after Christmas?

July 12th, 2017 - 3:27pmThat would be so annoying…but it is a possibility!

July 12th, 2017 - 5:10pmThat had better not happen I’m getting bored now, love 12 sorry to see Peter go we’re just being messed around now.
The Temporal Jelly Baby
July 12th, 2017 - 5:37pmHmm, what’s your source for Chibnall still being ‘on the hunt’? I’m only asking because Russell T Davies said that he knows who it is in a YouTube interview, suggesting that the 13th Doctor was cast at least 1 month ago.
Also, even if he/she hasn’t been cast, they can just do the regeneration in 2 parts with the 2 different actors.
Doctor Stu
July 12th, 2017 - 5:42pmI can’t remember where I read it but I thought Chibnall himself had said he’s on the hunt I’m probably wrong but then I wonder if he/she/it (could still be a well trained dog playing the part) has actually been cast then why hasn’t there been an announcement yet. I hope they’re trying to keep it hush hush even tho it’s virtually impossible
The Temporal Jelly Baby
July 12th, 2017 - 5:49pmMany questions, very few answers. I also hope they can keep it secret until the episode but it’s pretty unlikely really. Even if they can do it, the BBC hardly has a good track record with keeping us spoiler-free recently (I know The Sun is partly to blame for John Simm but still).

July 12th, 2017 - 8:18pmAs I recall PeterCapaldi wasn’t announced until August in that awful live event! I’m in 2 minds about what will happen. On one hand I really want it to be a surprise on Christmas day but in the other hand i really want to know who it is like yesterday

July 14th, 2017 - 12:27amHere’s a twist for you,the 12th doctor refuses to regenerate,so he dies.
Next we see,the 1st doctor,david bradley,enter the 12th doctor’s tardis.
And we go full circle, and the whole of series 11,is the 1st doctors, new adventures?
Then at the end of the 12th episode,he returns,to telos,and regenerates,into troughton.
Just a thought,bit freaky really.

July 9th, 2017 - 10:19pmSo, with all this fuss about the possibility of a female Doctor, how about a non-white/non-British Doctor? I’m interested to see where people stand there. For the sake of argument, let’s assume male.

July 10th, 2017 - 12:27pmI too would love the next Doctor to be Ben Whishaw but apparently Alexander Vlahos (Merlin and Versailles) has been talking about how much he’s a fan of Dr Who recently, he’d be amazing as the Dr. I’m not really a fan of Kris Marshall so I hope it’s not him to be honest.

July 8th, 2017 - 11:35pmCreate a alternate umiverse spin off and have the soctor a female in it so it doesnt ruin doctor who. Thats fine by me but dont let a female ruin it. Instead create a seperate show for the ones who want it and let the 1 million of them watch it. Dont get doctor who canceled again.
Mick181
July 9th, 2017 - 1:06pmThey get the Actress/Actor right give them the right stories with good directors and writers than a woman could be a great doctor. Wrong Actor/Actors, poor characters and Dr Who goes downhill a-la the 1980s, irrespective of whether the Dr is Male or Female.
The Outcast
July 9th, 2017 - 2:19pmI don’t see the need for the Doctor to be female to be honest. I’m not against the idea, but I don’t see why he needs to become a female.
Doctor Stu
July 9th, 2017 - 3:29pm‘Create a spin off show and give them a woman Doctor so people who want it can go and watch that instead’ erm wow no.
its high time the Doctor became a female but it doesn’t help with the media demanding it after every regeneration as it would look like a publicity stunt. How Would did you feel as a woman in that role thinking that you were cast notably because you’re a woman and nothing more.
Pats86
July 9th, 2017 - 9:20pmtherealwhovian I suspect you are correct, it could be a disaster.
Saying It How It Is
July 9th, 2017 - 9:25pmFor the majority of us, i am saying this. Doctor Who is a male, has been since the very first episode. In the shows canon, he may have been a girl before, but we, the viewers, didnt know him back then. The format has always been a male Doctor and mainly a female assistant/companion, whatever you like to call them.
I have nothing against women as actors, there are loads of them, although some cant act to save their lives, and some can. But the show does not need a woman Doctor.
Yes Romana, The Rani and random Gallifreyans have been female, but they were secondary characters. The Master was a female in the form of Missy, but again, a secondary character.
Its not to do with any nonsense that a woman would be a damsel in distress i:e Penelope Pitstop, but simply that The Doctor is and always should, only ever be a man.
The Temporal Jelly Baby
July 9th, 2017 - 10:13pmI understand your point, Saying It How It Is, and it’s actually kinda why I was originally against the idea. However, the only reason you’ve really provided there for why the Doctor shouldn’t be a woman is that the character hasn’t ever been before (as far as we know). But that doesn’t mean he can’t be. Since it has been firmly established that Time Lords can and do change gender sometimes, my opinion is simply that the casting (which has already been done anyway according to RTD) should be done irregardless of gender so whoever is the best choice for the role gets the role.
Just to clarify that, I think it should *not* be done for the sake of political correctness nor because the show ‘needs’ a female Doctor. What I’m actually saying is simply that the option clearly exists so why does it matter if a time travelling alien with 2 hearts is a woman?
The only possible argument I can see against it is the potential damage to the show as highlighted by Pats86/therealwhovan83. It is undeniable that the fan base is somewhat split over the issue. However, I find myself in agreement with Mick181 here. I think it’d simply depend on how well it’s done with a female Doctor and whether or not she and the writers/producers and so on and draw the viewers in.
Anyway, looking at reports, I suspect that the ‘safe’ option has been taken and another male Doctor has been cast.
Tim M
July 3rd, 2017 - 11:10pmMaybe on Xmas Day David Bradley as the First Doctor could hold a glass of bubbly aloft in his hand, turn to camera and wish “a merry Christmas to you at home”. 🙂 I think that scene is actually an extra on the ‘Adventure in Space and Time’ DVD. They could include it after the end credits maybe?

July 5th, 2017 - 6:57amI don’t think she would be a big part of the episode. She just pop and say Hello, Goodbye and then back the Victoria!
I would like him to see Susan and for her to say to him that she’s always felt safe living on earth because she has always known that even though the world is being invaded by Dalek and Cybermen and Sycorax and the Titanic has fell from the sky, she has always believed that her Grandfather has been looking after the world she has lived her whole life on. And then she could say ‘go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I’m not mistaken in mine’. That would convince him to regenerate!

What do you want from your Companions? One that will do nothing but stand there and scream whilst a monster walks slowly towards them or do you want a full range of characters each different to the one before.
Say one thing for Moffatt he’s 5 Companions Amy, Rory, River, Clara & Bill have been 5 very different characters.

July 4th, 2017 - 12:58pmI am of the opinion that writers do not have to spoon feed us every little detail. The TARDIS was experiencing a glitch and Missy fixed it. It was a plot device to get Missy out of the vault, but do we really need detail about the actual glitch? Nope. The show is only 45 mins long.
This happens in most dramas, not just DW. However, if you want to look at DW specifically, what about the woman in End of Time. RTD never explained who she was and that was a tad more important that why the TARDIS had a mechanical fault.
Example of other things that have been left unexplained in DW history – the Watcher. Who? What? Why? The Valeyard – How? These are all more important that a TARDIS glitch but the Moffatt haters love to pick up on such trivial matters even though it doesnt really matter compared to what past writers have done – or not done.

1) They appear to be in Antarctica and the First Doctor is wearing the same costume.
2) The TARDIS photographed on set appears to be the version with the flatter roof (introduced in the preceding story, ‘The Savages’).
3) It makes sense, thematically, for both Doctors to be nearing the end of their lives.

July 3rd, 2017 - 1:09pmthat seems to be the general consensus. the fact they coincidentally are in the same place and time. I,m sure theres a lot of people will be speculating the same thing, myself included and it would be a great christmas present to beable to loop back to the end of the tenth planet and to relive that missing regeneration. The Outcast
July 4th, 2017 - 12:27pmYeah. That would have been good. Sadly Moffat seems to love ingraining himself on everything. Why did the Doctor leave Gallifrey? Cause he was so scared of a Hybrid that didn’t exist. Then there’s other things like:
Clara’s responsible for choosing the Doctor’s TARDIS for him via some really _____ Dialog which the First Doctor would never listen too.
The Dalek respect hatred and don’t kill things that are full of hatred (Nonsense, Daleks kill out of racial hatred. Seriously Moffat?).
Daleks have a concept of mercy because the Doctor saved Davros as a child in that one story based off a line from Genesis of the Daleks (and wasn’t even 0.0001% as good).
The power of love can defeat anything!
So if I love life, can I fight off an entire army? No, of course not.
Tim M
July 4th, 2017 - 2:54pmThanks for reminding me of Davros. How on Earth (or Gallifrey) did the Doctor know that child was the ACTUAL power crazed Davros Dalek creater in the future? I’m called Tim…there are lots of Tim’s on the planet Earth. Wouldn’t it then be reasonable to presume that a child called Davros on Skaro could have been one of many? It might even be a popular name on Skaro.

One question, surely the Master hasnt been killed off, what with Missy not able to regenerate. I think it would have been cool if a) we saw the Masters TARDIS b) saw the Saxon/Missy regeneration c) saw Missy regenerate into new Master.

July 1st, 2017 - 11:20pmI didnt say he did. I said it would have been cool if we had saw the regeneration. My question was ‘has the Master been killed off?’. Even if your theory of him not regenerating into Missy straight away is correct, he will at somepoint therefore if Missy died then the Masters life ends there. Or do people think missy is still alive?

July 1st, 2017 - 11:43pmThe Master killed off? And in the 1st episode next year the Daleks will be killed off then the Cyberman and before the end of the season every major baddie will be gone.
No i think the Master will turn up sometime in the future, probably with a new face. Missy gave him enough time to get back to his TARDIS before his regeneration. As it was never actually confirmed that Missy followed Simm, there is plenty of Room for more Masters.

July 2nd, 2017 - 10:15amI don’t think Missy is still alive… that doesn’t mean she’ll stay dead.
Dono Nuts
July 4th, 2017 - 6:55amI don’t think we’ll see the Master again, the story’s dead and I don’t care about the relationship between the Doctor and Master anymore, it was so badly written these last few series. Definitely time for a new direction.

July 1st, 2017 - 8:45pmI’m really looking forward to this special now. I reckon the story will be then convincing each other to regenerate. 12 will show 1 all the good he will do in his future regenerations and as a result 12 will probably convince himself to move into the Chibnall days!
I wonder when we will find out who the next doctor is??

July 1st, 2017 - 8:52pmHopefully Christmas day and not a moment sooner

July 1st, 2017 - 8:55pmYeah I agree! I would love it to be a suprise. To be honest I thought they were getting at Heather being the next doctor for a second.
Dr RevWho
July 1st, 2017 - 9:03pmAs nice as it would be to keep it a surprise, it’s never going to happen. Just look at everything that was spoiled from the finale (Mondasian Cybermen, John Simm Master, First Doctor). In this day and age it’s near impossible to keep such things a surprise, but, as long as the stories stay good, I, for one, can forgive it.

July 1st, 2017 - 10:28pmit is actually impossible, they will start filming the new series in the coming months and a casting announcement will have to have been made.
Mick181
July 1st, 2017 - 11:50pmThe other question that hasn’t been asked will they dare to substitute Ben & Polly as well? If as it appears this is set on the 10th Planet. Or is this only a Cameo by the 1st Doctor, we’ll find out early Boxing Day morning (or i will as i live in Australia).
Anonymous
July 2nd, 2017 - 2:04amLiterally its not that hard.
They’ve already cast the actor from the sounds of it.
Do a closed studio regeneration.
Series 11 isn’t set to film until January 2018 from what I’ve heard, as we’re due an autumn series in 2018 rather than a spring one.
It’s not that impossible.
Unless the beebs wanna ruin it again, like they did with simm
spike
July 2nd, 2017 - 7:24amthis could easily be set during episode 3 of tenth planet when the doctor was off screen for the majority of the episode.
Sor Vad
July 2nd, 2017 - 6:06pmMick181 sorry to hear that you dont get to watch it on the premiere day 🙁
Mick181
July 3rd, 2017 - 1:19amSor Vad its about 5 am on Sunday morning here in Australia when it’s Saturday night in the UK. In Australia the ABC Australia (BBC equiv) show it live on their Streaming service so as soon as i wake up i put it on and watch it but i can watch it at the same moment as UK viewers do.
The same goes for Boxing Day morning, really looking forward to this years Xmas special, watch Dr Who at Breakfast time. Then watch the Ashes Cricket.
Pats86
July 3rd, 2017 - 8:42pmThey will probably do the same as with Capaldi’s introduction, in a studio full of so called “screaming fans”
r1ch1e
July 3rd, 2017 - 8:57pmOh God NO
Pats86
July 3rd, 2017 - 9:17pmI’m afraid so.
The Outcast
July 4th, 2017 - 12:12pmYeah, I feel they missed the opportunity to have 12’s face become 13’s for a second before reverting back with. That would have announced who the new Doctor is in the show. And John Simm’s involvement would have been kept a secret, if the marketing department hadn’t put him in the trailers.

July 1st, 2017 - 8:43pmI presume the 1st Doctor and 12th Doctor are both nearing their regenerations in the South Pole?!?! But when does this happen during ‘The Tenth Planet’? Does the first Doctor sneak out of bed, and out of the snowcap base at some point during episode 3 !?!?!
Marswho
July 2nd, 2017 - 4:23amI think it would happen, after the doctor leaves the snow base near the end of the concluding episode of the tenth planet. It doesn’t show it on screen but, there is a window of time where between him leaving the base and entering his tardis.
Dr RevWho
July 1st, 2017 - 8:28pmNever thought I’d be so excited for a ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special, but after that STUNNING finale, at the end of an excellent series (best in ages), I’m absolutely pumped! Bring it on!
Tim M
July 1st, 2017 - 8:18pmGreat for the fans, and confirms to the general public, that Moffat’s version of the show is made for the fans. Hurry up Chibnall and move this great series forward and don’t look back!
Pats86
July 3rd, 2017 - 9:09pmI’m a fan but I didn’t want gender change, Clara to go on so long and then not die, dreadful xmas episodes, Cybermen and Daleks to become laughable cannon fodder, repetitive story lines, the never ending reset button, Very weak Gattis stories, Hell Bent, the Paternoster gang, the Vault, very very poor writing most of the time, and much more misery he has inflicted on us.
So as far as I am concerned he wasn’t making the show for this fan and I suspect millions of others too, you are right about Chibnall for sure moving the show forward and not looking back.
Dono Nuts
July 4th, 2017 - 7:00amSpot on I been a fan since 1983 but these last few series have been naff, I didn’t watch Doctor Who for all the fan mcgubbins, I watched it to see adventures in time and space.
The Outcast
July 4th, 2017 - 12:08pmYeah, I agree. I don’t like how everyone sees the Doctor as “space jesus” and the show’s focus on how important all these characters are. Obviously character development is important, but I think the adventure, the mission should take priority over everything and we get to know these characters along the course of this big adventure.
who
July 1st, 2017 - 8:08pmI really hope the end credits reads
The Twelfth Doctor – Peter Capaldi.
The First Doctor – David Bradley.
And introducing Kris Marshall as The Thirteenth Doctor.
The Living Shadow
July 1st, 2017 - 8:29pmNO!
Tim M
July 1st, 2017 - 8:39pmKris Marshall is the clear odds on favourite. I would actually be surprised if it’s not him.

July 1st, 2017 - 8:53pmIts not
DannyTheNerd
July 1st, 2017 - 9:04pmI agree. I would really like him as the Thirteenth Doctor as he was great in Death in Paradise
Dr RevWho
July 1st, 2017 - 9:06pm‘Kris Marshall is the clear odds on favourite.’ That indicates nothing. For all we know, they could bring in an almost totally unknown actor to do it, like they did with Matt Smith.
Foam
July 1st, 2017 - 9:58pmIf not Kris Marshall, i hope that its someone who is new to acting so that tge very first thing they ever star in is Doctor Who as the Doctor. That way no one will have anything to compare the actor to that they would have previously done and also gives the show the much needed revamp that it needs.
Tim M
July 1st, 2017 - 10:31pmPeter Capaldi was the clear favourite before he got the role…and it was no surprise to me when he was announced.

July 2nd, 2017 - 7:26ami think it will be a lady
Anonymous
July 2nd, 2017 - 10:18amProblem is that the press were pushing for Kris Marshall before casting even began and every bit of evidence they have used to “confirm” it falls flat on its face if he wasn’t cast several months ago.
Gordon
July 2nd, 2017 - 2:28pmPaterson Joseph was the favourite before Matt smith got it. Being favourite means nothing
ohw rotcod
July 2nd, 2017 - 6:10pmOk then The Living Shadow, who do you think it should be then? Lets hear it.
Whotube
July 3rd, 2017 - 9:39pmI would love kris marshall to be the next doctor because my family has just been on watch which hasnt been on in years. So it might be a nod to him being the doctor
Dono Nuts
July 4th, 2017 - 7:02amI think with the reboot coming it will be a women in order to gain publicity and make the casual viewer tune in to see Doctor Who as a women as it will be unique.
Pats86
July 4th, 2017 - 9:47amIf that turns out to be true Dono Nuts we will see a large amount switch of, I have friends who have said they will do this because it takes away something fundamental about the show.
For a start my wife and daughter do not want a female Doctor! They don’t appear to be on their own either, it was an unnecessary move on Moffats part to split the fan base, he knew it would but didn’t care! Some fan he turned out to be.
It’s quite simple, If the Doctor continues to be male we will all continue to watch, if he changes gender many will stop, it really is that simple.
Yes I would continue to watch, I don’t like the idea as I have already said but that’s just me.
The Outcast
July 4th, 2017 - 12:05pmI’d like Kris Marshall’s Doctor (if, indeed it is him) to be played like the 7th Doctor. Starts out a bit like his character on ‘Death in Paradise’ but slowly we see hints of something else, until, in the finale, it turns out he’s been playing his foes.
the ergon
July 4th, 2017 - 12:49pmGordon, i disagree about paterson joseph. He probably threw his hat in the ring and has been vying for the part since before david tennant much prefer david harewood. The favourites alongside kris marshall are olivia coleman and the actress whos name i forget from fleabag.
DOCTORDREDD67
July 1st, 2017 - 8:03pmI was really hoping that this would happen. A very happy , very old , whovian here now. 🙂

July 1st, 2017 - 10:24pmShould imagine who fans of a certain age had a big grin on their face after seeing the end of tonight’s episode,I did.

July 1st, 2017 - 11:54pmOr sheer hatred that someone is substituting for William Hartnell and there will be haters. Personally loved it, done a good job playing Hartnell in an Adventure in time & space.

July 2nd, 2017 - 2:06amIf anything, his performance as hartnell in AAISAT makes him worthy of being the first doctor

July 1st, 2017 - 7:52pmI LOVE MULTI DOCTOR STORIES! I really like it how it will be the first doctor and the recent doctor. But bascially there will be three doctors in this one due to the fact there will be a regeneration.

July 1st, 2017 - 7:46pmI think we all know where this is heading

July 1st, 2017 - 7:40pmSo it seems the story will be both of them learning that change is good and should be welcomed. Slightly meta there, Moffatt?
