sounds like The Armageddon Factor, with Tom Baker? He meets an old friend, Drax, from the Time Lord Academy; Drax calls him Theta Sigma, his academy name.

The Cracks in time were caused by the TARDIS exploding.

… but you’re right that it would be a boring story. We still don’t know what caused the cracks in Smith’s first season. ^_^

I reckon that John appears between 8/McGann and 9/Eccleston. The awful thing he did was end the Time War, which would have been an act of peace and sanity.

But it was a joint BBC production so surely they would be able to use the footage?

It’d be both Awful and Hilarious if the Doctor’s Name was: STEVEN MOFFAT

Its interesting reading all the comments here and elsewhere- me and my partner both got a completely different take. Where as most reckon John Hurt is a Time War era ‘renegade’ regeneration- we thought John Hurt is pre-William Hartnell era.

So… John Hurt’s incarnation did something so awful (or SOMETHING) that shortly after he regenerated into William Hartnell, taking on the ‘Doctor’ mantle as a redemptive step to be a better person. This way, there are still 11 regenerations as we’ve always know them, still 11 Doctors just as there have always been- therefore removing this retro-active continuity the Time War renegade version would introduce.

Everyone seems to have a pretty good idea of what happened in the Time War, spelling it out in the anniversary just doesn’t seem too exciting to me. Wouldn’t it make more sense from a story telling perspective for the anniversary episode to celebrate a mystery RIGHT from the start of the Doctor’s origins, rather than a Time War introduced in 2005 and repeatedly discussed since?

    Hi Dennis,
I think the episode you’re referring to is The Trial of A Timelord.

For anyone complaining we didn’t find out the Doctors name….

    Its Bob Smith.

OK, I made that up to prove a point but you see how rubbish it is to know!

After watching what I thought was the best episode since the series came back. It brought back a a scene staring Peter Davidson, when he was called bact to the time lord council and he met a friend from long agao, and they talked about his name!! I can’t find this episode anywhere, can anybody remember this?

Pertwee’s adventures were ALL shot and transmitted in colour. Many were lost when the BBC recycled loads of the old videotape, leaving only black and white masters. Most of these have been restored to colour now as well.

The first reference to a name was in the very first episode “The Beginning” where Ian Chesterton refers to him as “Dr. Foreman” !! as his Granddaughter was known at school as Susan Foreman, and the Tardis was in Foreman’s Junk Yard!!

they should have left the Brig in shot

I’m guessing they used the Five Doctors footage because it still exists on film and so can be used in HD, rather than original 70s Pertwee footage which would all be on video tape.

No, a few parts of the early Pertwee episodes were black and white. I remember being surprised because I expected everything in to be in color.

The title was referencing what Matt says at the end to Hurt’s Doctor.
“But you didn’t do it in the name of The Doctor!” Nothing to do with his actual name but revealing that one of The Doctor’s broke the bond that the other Doctor kept, to help people (Well in Seventh’s case that is highly debatable but never mind, let us go with this idea). So yes the name was never going to be revealed it was just implied that it was.

As a long time fan of the show, Saturday felt like Christmas.

It was brilliant! Loved every minute of it.

In terms of theroies regarding Hurt, I think the action he took that was not in the name of the Doctor could potentially be commit suicide, ie forced regeneration out of shame of actions taken in war, although this could be a little bit too dark of a theme for the little ones.

I just got this gut feeling you know…

Anyway this and rings of Akanten were the best episodes of an otherwise lackluster series.

In terms of my Favourites this season 7B.

    1. The Name of the Doctor
    2. The Rings of Akanten
    3. The Bells of St.John
    4. Cold War
    5. Hide
    6. Nightmare in Silver
    7. The Crimson Horror
    8. Jorney to the centre of the tardis

Some might think that Journey merits a higher position but I was bored stupid and too many missed opportunities and corridor running with weak acting and a big solve all deus ex machina at the end = Weak.

Crimson horror sent me to sleep too…

But this is a return to form and a great anniversery present for fans!

Not all the Pertwee stories were in colour.
    But most were.
