The TARDIS
November 14th, 2013 - 3:56pmBrilliant! My only complaints being I think it’s a shame that the mystery about McGanns regeneration has been lost, and I was hoping a moffat would prove to be rather less predictable regarding the identity of Hurt. Other than those, I can pick no faults!

November 14th, 2013 - 3:47pmIt’s official – John Hurt is the 9th Doctor! Loving the appearance of McGann, and the Sisterhood. What next? Eccleston and the Kinda?!
Timelord3
November 14th, 2013 - 3:49pmYES! That MUST happen
doctorpond393
November 14th, 2013 - 4:06pmHe isn’t the 9th Doctor, he’s the war doctor.
Some bloke
November 14th, 2013 - 4:10pmyes, he’s 8.5 doctor. Like the watcher is the 4.5 doctor
doctorpond393
November 14th, 2013 - 5:42pmTechnically, he’s not the doctor at all. He’s an incarnation between 8 & 9.
Anonymous
November 14th, 2013 - 5:44pmyeah some bloke and doctorpond393 are right he is the 8th Doctor still he just altered is appearance to become the War Doctor so no he not the 9th Doctor
drjakeyoung
November 14th, 2013 - 5:47pmThe sisterhood said it was a regeneration, so it is a completely new incarnation. I guess it’s all down to personal preference when it comes to where Hurt fits in. I am not gonna class him as anything until i see the day of the doctor, and i suggest you lost don’t either.
doctorpond393
November 14th, 2013 - 11:36pmMoffat has stated that the numbers will not change and McGann will still be 8 and Eccleston will still be 9. Hurt isn’t the doctor. He’s the war doctor.
pwilc1967
November 14th, 2013 - 3:35pmPaul McGann has two official onscreen adventures.
Will BBC release a DVD of The Night of the Doctor? Possibly an extended edition, making of documentary, cast commentary, production subtitles an listings. Can’t wait.
(Tongue firmly in cheek)

November 14th, 2013 - 3:44pmI think that this is the best minsode yet because it is something that we were missing (but it’s better waiting until now, as it is more special)

November 14th, 2013 - 3:23pmAmazing, more Paul McGann and the sisterhood of karn! But does mentioning the big finish companions bring it officially into cannon?
Some bloke
November 14th, 2013 - 3:24pmYES!!! Of course it does
DOCTOR WHO ONE
November 14th, 2013 - 3:45pmYes, all 8th Doctor adventures, the TV Movie, Big Finish Audios, Comic-Strips and Novel’s, are all canon.
Timelord3
November 14th, 2013 - 3:49pmHooray!
Some bloke
November 14th, 2013 - 4:10pmcomic strips and novels?
Some bloke
November 14th, 2013 - 4:13pmI don’t think we can include the comics and books, because he only mentioned his companions from the big finish audios, so… Only audios are counted as canon
DOCTOR WHO ONE
November 14th, 2013 - 3:18pmWell, I wasn’t expecting this 😀
TheBritishCupOfTea
November 14th, 2013 - 3:09pmI’m blown away. Truly am. Thank you so much Moffat…now the intriguing thing is…McGann denied ANY involvement…
….Could this mean we will see other classic Doctors?
Maff
November 14th, 2013 - 3:54pmHe denied any involvement in the Day of the Doctor. I guess no one asked him if he’d be in a prequel!,

November 14th, 2013 - 2:45pmThat was brilliant! I cant believe Paul McGann returned for one last time (but who knows), theres now hope that Christopher Eccleston will return when John Hurt has to regenerate 😀
dalek eternal
November 14th, 2013 - 2:15pmthat was brilliant we’ve finally seen how the 8th dr regenerated all we need to see now is hurt regenerate into the eccleston
booboo
November 14th, 2013 - 1:50pmI thought that was amazing
hate to say it but that 6 mins alone knocked spots off anything i have seen since 2005
Paul McGann was brilliant in that
Some bloke
November 14th, 2013 - 2:17pmI second that! It was amazing. I can’t believe Paul came back for this. To be honest we were all suspicious of him being involved in some way shape or form, but this is amazing. If this six minute prequel is considered to be the best thing since 2005, then god knows what an hour and 15 min special is going to be like. After this, it better be good 😀
simon
November 14th, 2013 - 2:56pmAll i can say is WOW I just cant wait for the 50th Annervesary story. I only hope this story is as good as this 6 min story
KORSAIR
November 14th, 2013 - 8:55pmI totally agree. Paul McGann’s Doctor should’ve had a series of his own

November 14th, 2013 - 1:49pmWho is that at the end in the reflection? It’s not John Hurt, is it?
Some bloke
November 14th, 2013 - 1:50pmyes it is

November 14th, 2013 - 1:50pmyes but much much younger
The 13th Doctor
November 14th, 2013 - 6:32pmIt makes you wonder if Matt smith’s Doctor can journey alone for 200 years and not seem to age, how long did the time war go on for?
Whiteknightanddog
November 17th, 2013 - 2:35pmIt looks as though the young War Doctor’s face is taken from John Hurt’s appearance as Caligula in “I Claudius” which I think dates back to the 1980’s.
Whiteknightanddog
November 17th, 2013 - 3:06pmActually, thinking more of “I Claudius”, which I think was actually made in the late 1970’s, the vaguely heroic Claudius was of course played by Derek Jacobi, a latter day Master, whereas Hurt was the evil Caligula and is now a sort of hero (I expect the War Doctor will come good in the end). Co-incidence and irony?
Anonymous
November 14th, 2013 - 1:45pmJohn Hurt’s character is a Doctor and at the same time isn’t.
His character is very much like the watcher (Logopolis) and the Valeyard (The Trial of a Time Lord), so no. Hurt is not the ninth Doctor, but is more like Doctor 8.5, in a way, it’s like a spilt time line of the doctor’s life.
Some bloke
November 14th, 2013 - 1:51pmI’ve never thought of it like that and that seems much better and more plausible than saying he’s the 9th doctor. To be honest, I would prefer him to be a sort of 8.5 watcher like doctor 🙂

November 14th, 2013 - 1:43pmSent a shiver down my spine – followed Paul McGann through the BBC books and then into audio and so fantastic to see him back in the role – what a really unexpected treat. I’m going to guess that will be it for the older doctors now this anniversary – but who knows….

November 14th, 2013 - 1:40pmThis beats time crash by miles for being the best minisode of dr who ever. Hell, it’s better than most normal episodes!

November 14th, 2013 - 1:36pmJohn Hurt is the Valyard
Dalek The Supreme
November 14th, 2013 - 1:45pmNope, we have it pretty much confirmed he’s the incarnation who fought in the Time War between the 8th and 9th Doctors we’re used to. The Valeyard is an amalgamation of everything dark or evil about the Doctor from between his twelfth and thirteenth incarnations. Actually, that means they could have a Valeyard subplot in the Christmas special or Series 8.
Dalek The Supreme
November 14th, 2013 - 1:02pmThat was AMAZING! Not only do we see the 8th Doctor and get mentions of some Big Finish companions, but also we have the Sisterhood of Karn, and the regeneration! Very interesting plot, and I can’t wait to see the actual Time War now! 😀
Paul
November 14th, 2013 - 12:51pmAbsolutely speechless. Brilliant.
NCC-1701-D
November 14th, 2013 - 12:19pmThat was AWESOME, the eighth Doctor, woooooo. So John Hurt IS the real Ninth Doctor, or the ‘War Doctor’. Interesting that they’ve told us this now and not made us wait until the 23rd, at least we finally know what happened to the eighth Doctor, presuming that was the real eighth doctor, also, this technically makes Peter Capaldi the Thirteenth Doctor, so does that mean he’ll be the last?
Anonymous
November 14th, 2013 - 1:06pmIt had already been confirmed a while back that was who he was.
As is explained in both this mini episode and in The Name of the Doctor, Hurt’s incarnation is an actual incarnation of the Doctor, however he is not a “Doctor” (rather he is a “Warrior” as we now know). So he is the Doctor’s ninth incarnation but not the Ninth Doctor (that still goes to Eccelston).
However, this still gets the net result that Capaldi’s 12th Doctor is the 13th incarnation so would in theory be the final incarnation. However, the limit will be dealt with once and for all in the anniversary special (to as Moffat put it “ensure the show runs for another 50 years”).
Dalek The Supreme
November 14th, 2013 - 1:47pmActually, if you think about it, the Tenth Doctor wasted a regeneration in Journey’s End, so technically, Matt Smith is still the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor, but he wouldn’t have anymore natural regenerations. Unless, of course, they decide to utilize the fact that River Song gave him her remaining regenerations.

That was incredible! Just wish we saw the actual facemorph…
