How old are you? As an “older fan” I’ve been watching Dr. Who since I was in high school, 15 yrs old. I am now 66 yrs old. Ha! I’ve always hated the ‘New Dr.’ And the new stories. Then it all feels right and I love the ‘new Dr.’ Then I hang on a go for a ride…. again!

While I agree with your opinions, I would enjoy some humor now and then. It’s too dry and dark.

My favorite thing about this season so far is the fact every single episode, without exception, is polarizing. Every episode has had people say they’ll never watch Doctor Who again (though of course they do), and every episode has been called the “Best Ever” as well. Although it’s frustrating to see how many people simply aren’t “getting it” I do accept the fact some people want simple minded SF and some people want the episodes to be carbon copies of what we’ve had for seven season previously. Me, I’m loving the fact these episodes are making people uncomfortable. If some people bail, I don’t care: Series 9 films in January regardless. And the more Capaldi, the better. Can’t wait to see what Frank Cottrell Boyce does the show with his episode.

@Anonymous: ” indeed a black actor has been offered the role (although turned it down), the second choice was white so that was the actor who was given the role.”

Please check your facts. It has been repeatedly reported that Peter Capaldi was the only actor ever considered for the Twelfth Doctor. That has been stated numerous times. What you’re hearing is an unsubstantiated rumor, though it is always possible a black actor was considered for Eleven. According to Russell Davies, however, Tennant was the only actor seriously considered for Ten.

Sorry you feel that way. I think you’ll regret it, personally because I think kids should be exposed to grown up SF.

I thought the episode brilliant, but in ways I wasn’t expecting. I thought the spiders would play a bigger role, but in the end the moral dilemma was a great hook. I disagree with those who say it was un “Doctorish” for him to leave the decision to Clara, Ludvick and Courtney. The repercussions will be in interesting. It is obvious the Doctor completely misread the situation and how Clara would react to being forced into such a dramatic decision.

The kids have been telling me that the new Doctor is mean, not at all like the previous Doctors. They seem a bit frightened by the intensity, and anger. (I will add judgmental attitude) I listen to my kids when they speak their minds, and I asked what we should do. So, according to their concerns, and reactions to Mr. Capaldi’s portrayal of the Dr. we are taking the show off our viewing list.

    Well, I certaintly enjoyed it!
Slight let down from what I was expecting, but still a great ep
It did sort of feel like a rehash of ‘The Beast Below’ (but I preter this ep to that one so I’ll let it off)
I don’t get why so many ‘older fans’ hate this series – it’s the most classic-like series since 2005, and damn good too!!!

They should be fairly cast on grounds of their acting ability, not their race. That is the policy the BBC has taken and has followed, indeed a black actor has been offered the role (although turned it down), the second choice was white so that was the actor who was given the role.

“Stunt casting” does nothing to help any problems.

Let think of the future. I think that the next doctor, the 13th (15th) should be black, but not only black, but a kid.
Also, I thought of a good episode, “I DREAMED A NIGHTMARE”.

I was really surprised with Clara telling the Doctor to go away, I hope they get back together. Apart from that I loved the episode.

Well that’s the problem with a long running TV show, ultimately it has its continuity and they couldn’t just leave the moon destroyed.

After all we the fans know that following this incident, in 2050 humanity decided to install a base on the moon with a gravitron to ensure such a weather disaster would never happen again due to the moon’s gravity, which the Doctor would later visit in 2070 during a Cyberman invasion (see The Moonbase), and again in 2090 during an Ice Warrior invasion (see The Seeds of Death). Of course the Doctor couldn’t tell Clara about this.

    October 5th, 2014 - 12:13am

Was a bit of cop out I thought really.

I was hoping for something more along the lines of “The Green Death” in which a newly evolved or discovered lifeform couldn’t coexist with humanity. It was them/it or us and the Doctor couldn’t just sit on the fence anymore than he could if it were Daleks/Cybermen.

I have to agree with both of you about the story, and did the newly born creature flap its wings? In the vacuum of space? Hmm. I also like your thinking Sophie on the story arc. I’ve been thinking that since Robot of Sherwood. The Doctor just doesn’t appear to be totally himself and there would appear to be a possibly logical explanation.

Glad it wasn’t just me then! Did not like this one at all…and what have they done to my doctors?????? This man is not the doctor….perhaps the story arc is that this is the master?????

I really didn’t like the ending. he spiders were good but were used for all of 5 minutes. Plus, I’m sure Clara has had more screen time than the doctor this series.

    I loved when Clara said

  • The Other Guy

    October 4th, 2014 - 11:11pm

For the first time this series I was left feeling completely cold from this episode. It was just dull. Courtney was annoying, the astronaut woman was just a very poor character, Clara was her usual self and the Doctor was AWOL for large chunks of it.
The story was very flimsy and didn’t sit right with how the Doctor has been set out in the last 50 years. Leaving the decision up to the humans, since when. He’s usually trying to come up with a plan to save both but this time he just buggers off.
    Very bad episode.

    October 4th, 2014 - 11:09pm

I’ve got to say in my opinion this episode was by far the worst episode this series.
The astronaut lady (I can’t remember her name) was perhaps the worst supporting character so far this series. She had practically no character. For the first half of the episode she was just there in the background. Then when it came for her to actually do something and argue for killing the creature I found it difficult to sympathise with her as I had no attachment to her as a character in an episode where that was important.
The spiders were wasted as they were incredible underused. All they did was kill two people we didn’t care about in the first half of the episode and then they barely appeared for the rest of it.
The Doctor leaving was completely out of character. Many times this series the Doctor has expressed dislike against humans. he would not allow three humans to decide the fate of an innocent creature. He would do his best to find a way to save both the creature and the Earth. Him leaving felt forced, just to get a way for the Earth to choose to kill the creature so Clara can save it at the last second.
    The kid was very annoying.
Clara leaving at the end felt very forced. After all we’ve seen Clara go through with the Doctor, I don’t believe that she would just leave him like that. However I’m going to see where this story arc is going before I make any proper opinions on this.
The story was just e rip off of The Beast Below.

On the plus side this was one of the best looking episode I’ve seen in a long time.

I don’t know where to begin with this episode!
I’m highly disappointing because i thought we were finally going to get a decent episode from this series!
To start, i absolutely despised the character of Courtney! she had absolutely no personality and she consistently complained about everything. The spiders on the ‘so called’ moon were only used for a maximum of five minutes and were a waste of good monsters. The concept of the moon being an egg was the most stupidest thing iv’e ever heard and the fact that this newly born creature inside the moon gave birth to another egg the exact same size was just a cop out to a sensible resolution.
MOFFAT NEEDS TO LEARN THAT NOT ALL PEOPLE WATCHING DOCTOR WHO ARE KIDS OR I’M AFRAID I WILL NOT BE VIEWING ANY MORE EPISODES!!

*btw i did enjoy some of the filming but the action scenes tended to stop and start and the music was abysmal*

    October 4th, 2014 - 10:32pm

Just wow…This ep blew me away! The plot was pretty creative and the alien arachnids looked and sounded chilling.I loved the concept that all through human history the moon has been an egg for a giant space creature and we have been none the wiser. Also, the Doctor leaving Clara,Ludvick, and Courtney to make the decision that would determine Earth’s future was a real shock that i did not expect! And after this episode,I’m unsure if the friendship between the Doctor and Clara is heading to the end of a cliff and will be sent careering off of it.All in all, a fantastic episode,in my opinion the best of series 8 so far!

    October 4th, 2014 - 10:18pm

Well, for me, it’s Doctor Who, so I enjoy 95% of the episodes. It’s only the occasional episode like Love and Monsters that I don’t enjoy. I see what you mean about them being more like the classics, especially Kill the Moon and Into the Dalek. Isn’t that one of the things Moffat promised on before the series? If so, he has pretty much fulfilled that promise.

For Clara overshadowing the Doctor…yeah, that is true, but it doesn’t bother me quite as much as it bothers a lot of other Whovians.
