16, nearly 17 actually, and grew up with the classic series on video and DVD – before watching the re-boot from the start
I love both ‘classic’ and ‘new-Who’, but prefer to think of it as one show
My point is that many people who refer to themselves as ‘older fans’ who ‘prefer the classic series’ actually seem to be acting like teenage fan-girls, who think every Doctor should be like Matt Smith (who I still thought was good)

No need for rudeness because you disagree

Sorry but there are so many rigid plot devices in Moffats version of Dr Who that it’s really made me appreciate just how good Russell T Davies actually was. The main one being 15mins into each episode fat/ugly/bald/man/with two lines of dialogue and no emotional investment in character is killed by monster to demonstrate how dangerous monster is. Then we know after that that no one else will be killed as this function has been demonstrated on minor character whos death causes no offence and has no consequence. RTD with Ecclestone, Tenant and Smith was tremendous at giving shocks and variety with regards various characters mortality that it could be tragic and genuinely surprising all the way through each episode. Even my kids predict it now and are wondering what’s happening with the stories. It is like the red shirt Star Trek guys. Predictable and lazy- Moffat is showing how good RTD was. Making it for the US a la Primeval stylee with these plot devices will please no one and lead to ruin.

Of course, but you are picking out the best shows from 26 years worth of material and comparing them to the first half of 1 series.

There were many great stories from the shows initial run of 26 years but I am of the opinion that there are as many top stories from the shows second stint despite only being on air for a third of the time…there have certainly been less awful stories. Bar one or two exceptions the entire 5th Doctors run was plagued by awful scripts and mis-casting.

    First Doctor – a-morral
Second Doctor – used his companions as pawns in his gameplan
Third Doctor – had an utter contempt for most humans
Fourth Docor – void of emotion
Fifth Doctor – Allowed Adrics death
Sixth Doctor – Tried to kill Peri
    Seventh Doctor – Committed Genocide
Eighth Doctor – allowed Lucie to die
War Doctor – say no more
    Ninth Doctor – abnoxious

You seemed to forgot that the Doctor has always been an anti hero with a darkness that he more often than not keeps in check…but its always been there. The 12th is similar in a lot if ways to the First and I for one am enjoying his more direct approach and I’m sure like most other incarnation he will evolve as time goes on. After all we’re only half way through his first series.

Having been a Dr Who Fan since attending the Boys and Girls Exhibition London in 1964. Since this time the Dr has been a character with many faces and has always had an untold dark side.

Trying to bring the Dr into the 21st century is no easy task as everything in this century appears to need violence and darkness, however Peter Capaldi as great as he is as an actor is crucifying the Dr’s image. His evil tendencies and lack of remorse in some scenes are not in my opinion Dr Who. I sincerely hope that you can not only help Capaldi turn his image around and return the Dr back into the quirky eccentric time lord we know and love.

Understanding each regeneration has to be its own manifestation of who the Dr should be based on the actors ability,I believe Matt Smith and David Tenant were the epitome of the Dr.

At 56 I am far from ready to see the Dr regenerate into a dark and sorry Time Lord that c an not be saved.

What about the kids who watched the 1st Doctor….the original. He was rude, obnoxious and largely a – moral. He paved the way for the next 50 years of kids watching various personalities of the Doctor.

Really enjoyed this episode, especially the first half where the Doctor took the lead role. There was menace, suspense and humour.
It would have been good to have had some more of the spider like creatures in the manner of the first death (almost Alien-ish).
Courtney wasnt too bad in my opinion though I really hope she is kept to a minimum.
For the first 30 minutes Clara wasnt too bad. She complimented the Doctor well. Even when she became the focus of the story I could accept that as the Doctor was forced into abandoning them to make their decision. It was a human decision that only they could make (an innocent creature vs human life).
Remember how the fourth Doctor agonised over the destruction of the Daleks in Genesis? It made sense for him not to be a part of such a decision.
However, Claras outburst at the end seemed somewhat contrived to me. It felt ‘added-on’ somehow and did her character no justice at all.
All in all, possibly my second favourite episode to Time Heist.

Views as a scientist? DW has always been soft sci fi…its not meant to be realistic. It’s like watching Marvel films and allowing your knowledge to prevent you from enjoying it….its all about suspending belief and enjoying the ride.

Are you sure you got the right episode? I had no problems with it personally, but Danny Pink was there, Clara was in the lead role and the Doctor wandered off for half the episode (and even then it isn’t his own show, it’s a show about him).

I have checked my facts, the source was certainly substantiated.

Certainly the impression I got was it was Matt Smith, although obviously Neil Gaiman didn’t identify the Doctor out of respect for the actor who did eventually get the role when he revealed this fact.

And let’s face it, he’s probably one of the best sources you could get, short of the executive producers.

Great story with some massive let downs…
To start I’m not sure whether I liked the concept of the Moon being an egg! Like all this time, through the adventures of the Doctor the Earth’s Moon has been an egg – and then by Waters of Mars it was a whole different Moon (egg). Okay…..
Also, the way that Courtney was just casual with her teacher on the Moon, and the way that she didn’t even seem to have any sort of teacher student relationship with Clara was poor.
I did like the reference to Tumblr however, and how it was referenced to Grandma in 2049 😛
So does Coutrney become President of the US, what was going on with that at the end?
And the Doctor was out of character, to put that much pressure on Clara, to risk the whole timeline of Earth just to prove a point – I don’t think anyone would believe in someone that much – and it wasn’t put across that it was his faith in Clara, but his stupidity, which I didn’t like.
And what on Earth (or in Moon) was this massive creature that could flap its wings in a Vacum of space? What could be that big? Seriously!

I have to say, I don’t know why Courteney had to be there, it was a waste of a space suit
and i don’t even think he called her special or anything,
that was a bit odd as i thought this doctor would hate children, it seemed he did and didn’t for her
also, i would’ve quite liked it maybe if the Doctor didn’t come back, and Clara died on the base.
It’s controversial, but I think that would’ve been a heroic end for her, and we all did know the doctor would come back anyway so…
what do you guys think on that?

  • RORY DOCTOR RIVER POND

    October 5th, 2014 - 11:24am

I do think some classics are better than modern stories though. I’m quite young, but I’ve seen The Hand of Fear, Planet of Evil and Genesis of the Daleks on DVD, and to me they are better than the Caretaker, Nightmare in Silver, and Deep Breath, purely because they have strong story lines

  • RORY DOCTOR RIVER POND

    October 5th, 2014 - 11:21am

I don’t mind Clara, but I liked her confrontation with the Doctor. These episodes are meant to be about the new Doctor, and how Clara will deal with him, and I think if I got ditched on the Moon left with that decision I would be angry too
As for Into the Dalek, she felt the Doctor was pleased that he was right the Dalek was bad and that they were going to die

    1. Kill The Moon – Good plot, great acting, tense, exciting.
    2. Time Heist – Exciting, fantastic supporting cast, a bit rushed at the end.
    3. Listen – A mess, good premise with the monster under the bed, doesn’t go anywhere but sets up finale.
    4. Deep Breath – A revelation as it goes on for a three part episode of old and doesn’t do anything. Boring in hindsight but enjoyable-ish the first time.
    5. Into the Dalek – I’ve seen this before. It was called ‘Dalek’ and it was fantastic. This was poor, and the Dalek Antibodies were stupid! They’re clearly robotic, so why didn’t Davros make the Daleks like these, if he made them?
    6. Robot of Sherwood – Cool Knights, Ben Miller, poorly scripted, bad idea.
    7. The Caretaker – The MOST pathetic monster ever, the MOST annoying companion(s) ever, the WORST plot ever.

    October 5th, 2014 - 10:59am

That’s more like it! Best so far. Probably. I loved Time Heist, but the love-creatures part of the plot was even more rushed than it was in Hide. This I thought was fantastic, not too scary, but really cool.
Now for my weekly Clara rant! I actually don’t mind her to much in this episode, but her shouting at the Doctor to get into his box and fly away(although he’s clearly already in it) was… I don’t know how to describe it. For a Doctor who’s 100% Rebel Time Lord, I would have liked a scene where the Doctor’s shouting at her and she gets thrown out because she thinks she’s better than him.

I loved this episode the only downer for me was that it wasn’t the soup dragon that hatched out 🙂

    October 5th, 2014 - 9:48am

1-Time Heist: Yeah, some really bad corridor scenes, and a bit too complicated, but solid acting and a simple idea executed pretty good.
2-Into the Dalek: Needed some more explanation/world building, but it’s nice to see the Daleks exterminating again!
3-The Caretaker: Danny Pink bland enough to be called Danny Beige, and the Skovox Blitzer looked kind cheap, but amusing and done pretty well.
4-Kill the Moon-Simple enough premise, executed well with a good twist, but some really poor acting from Courtney and Clara.
5-Listen-A mess of about 15 to 20~ episodes, with so many ideas put in for no good reason. But, credit where it’s due, that scene in the Foster Home was GLORIOUS, some of the best Dr. Who since 2005.
6-Robot of Sherwood-A fun romp with Robin Hood, but overall trades story for humor. At least this one’s funny!
7-Deep Breath-It drags on, and on, and on. And then KEEPS GOING. It fails to focus on the Doctor which was the point of the episode. Truly Dissapointing.

    Excellent episode!

Interesting to also compare this episode to Waters of Mars – it seems that whether points in time are fixed or fuzzy, the Doctor has perhaps learned from his past interferences that he should leave well enough alone. The Doctors whole demeanour here seems to be the antithesis to – and possibly a deliberate reaction against – the scars that are still be felt from the damage caused by the”time lord victorious”.

What made the ending so powerful for me was that Clara couldn’t really know those mistakes from The Doctor’s past and is essentially – and emotionally – asking him to be that man again. To make those decisions that may not really be his to make. Clara wants a hero rather than an alien – but doesn’t understand the damage that the hero can be capable of causing. Her concept of making moral choices is not the same as this incarnation of The Doctor. She doesn’t see things in the way he sees things. She has seen the doctor as the hero and she wants that back, but this doctor simply has a different way of making moral choices. He is more conflicted, less inclined to grand gestures of reassurance, and more aligned to the complexity and compromises of the universe. Clara’s arguments are powerful – the are all about taking a stand, being counted, making a difference – but then again, she wasn’t there on Mars.

Essentially, whatever man the Doctor chooses to be, the hero or the alien, it’s a lose lose situation in one way or another.

Clara’s not being a cow, as one comment referred to her. She is not being simply petulant, difficult or ungrateful for the sake of it. She is simply being very human.

For sure, things are getting interesting….

Last year I watched every single DW from Unearthly Child onwards….I concluded that older fans do look back on the older episodes through Rose tinted specs…..even myself who started watching from 78. The older shows were constantly littered with awful production (even for the time), second rate acting and third rate scripts with inconsistencies by producers who didn’t care that still cause problems. The show often produced some classics which fans hang on to but in general the newer stories(from 2005) are of a more consistently high standard (especially 2011 onwards)….yep there are certain some duffers but that is true of any long running show but there are far less weak stories now than there was in the 60s-80s.

I am one older fan who, like the show, has. Moved with the times. I love the show more than ever…just some weeksI love it more than others.

It’s because you’re used to the recent few years. In the old days the incarnations were very removed from their previous selves. 10 and 11 were similar in many ways which has made it difficult for anyone to follow….but it was the right choice (and bravest) to completely move on from the 10thnd 11th era.

Besides Capaldi’s Doctor is no more “rude” than the 1st, 3rd and 6th who could all be obnoxious ….also the 9th was utterly rude too but that was more down to his problems dealing with the time war.

  • Ian

    October 5th, 2014 - 9:10am

All the Doctors are different, this one is no different.

Baker’s, Eccleston even Tennant have all been rude and unforgiving to co-stars in one story or another. Capaldi is brilliant and has created his own Doctor perfectly.

The real enemies of this series (Clara aside) are some weak script writers.

Otherwise – better than series 7 part 2.

Okay! Deep Breath, fantastic start to Capaldi’s Era – Into the Dalek, It was was epic and it felt like I was watching old Doctor Who again – Robot of Sherwood, really good and I enjoyed it – Listen, just brilliant and everything I hoped for – Time Heist was again brilliant and had a really clever twist at the end – The Caretaker, great and average at best – Kill the Moon, loved the story and it was absolutely fantastic!

I find it hard to believe I’m watching “The Doctor” with Capaldi, he seems so removed from previous incarnations with his rudeness and shouting. That’s not Capaldi’s fault, it’s Moffat’s. I can only think this is deliberately building up to something.

As regards “Kill The Moon”, many years ago I read a short sci-fi story where every planet in our solar system was a giant bird egg being warmed by the sun. A mother bird eventually turned up and the earth was destroyed when a chick hatched. Coincidence ?

    October 5th, 2014 - 8:52am

    This was a marked improvement.

No Danny Pink, and Clara back where she should be = not the centre of the plot and in the lead role.

The Doctor was the lead character in his own programme, so a distinct improvement all round. Lets hope, now we have raised the bar we can keep it there.

Disappointed the spider was no connection to Metabelis 3.

This episode was great for me! However, I think my views as a scientist are clouding my judgment on this episode, as I can’t get over how the moon can simply disappear, then be replaced (by a new born child…) with another one, without even the slightest effect on Earth. Again, brilliant episode, but like many episodes in the Clara era, misses out on perfect marks due to a rushed ending and a silly conclusion ( robot of Sherwood, I’m looking at you – and you Hide, oh, and of course, worst of all, Rings of Akahten).
    8/10

I hated the character of Courtny as well, what a chav! (Also how did she get hold of the phycic paper?) She just gave the episode weight that it didn’t need.

The Moon being an egg is a very silly idea, but I have to admit I did think it was slightly amusing… But when it ‘hatched’ at the end and emediatly lay another egg (moon etc.) I did think it was a bit forced.

Also, it seems the SB6 spacesuits are back… WITH NO LOGO! How lazy of the BBC, in Listen, all they had to do was take of the SB6 logo from Orson’s space suit, and in Kill the Moon, I’m sure in One scene the Doctor’s Space suit has the logo, but it’s been removed or painted over… I think Orson’s space suit should get the No. 1 spot for being Doctor Who’s laziest wardrobe malfunction…

Also, just a nit-pic, but why does The Moon look so close to the Earth?

  • DOCTOR WHO ONE

    October 5th, 2014 - 7:29am

Doctor Who – Series 8 for the first 6 episodes has been brilliant, but last nights 7th episode for me sadly was a complete and utter bore.

During series 8, I have come across a lot of comments here on this site and on YouTube from people who are fed up with Jenna-Louise Coleman’s Clara Oswald, claiming that she’s become boring and wooden, and that the show may as well be called CLARA WHO rather then DOCTOR WHO, and I’ve largely disagreed with these comments.

However, last night, Clara really angered me with her rude attitude towards the Doctor near the end of the episode. She was an utter hypocrite, telling him about walking among us and breathing our air and slapping him so hard he’d regenerate [she still owns him an apology for that slap in ‘Into the Dalek’].

She’s become a right cow, so I’m now agreeing with the Clara haters cos of last nights ending. After all, she won’t accept the new Doctor, she want’s 11 back obviously. I’ve liked her so much, but now, after last night, I want her gone, even thou I still like Jenna herself, but Clara – what a cow, she should be slapped by all past female companions, one by one.
