What did You Think of Series 10 Episode 6 Extremis ?
Now that the sixth episode of series 10 has been aired what did you think? Was it everything you had hoped for or not what you expected.
In the Haereticum – the Vaticanโs secret library of blasphemy – there is an ancient book known only as The Veritas.
Throughout history, anyone who has ever read it has immediately taken their own life. Now a new translation is online, and the danger is spreading. The Vatican appeals to the Doctor. Will he read The Veritas? But can even the Doctor survive the ultimate truth?

May 21st, 2017 - 8:49pmEasily pleased then?

May 21st, 2017 - 10:18amIt was quite good, and I did like The Doctor integrating himself in to the simulation program and the idea of it. So that seems a good set up for next week.
I don’t care for the episode being bogged down with Bill’s private life drama’s – leave it out -boring – simulation or not – it just seems Moffat is over intending all the time, in portraying all the companions he has written for, to have a soap-opera life to deal with ….
And Nardole is still a lazy check/balance for the development of Doctor’s character.
I also view the vault as just cheap trickery – who are these people who know how to execute Time Lords – what significance are they further down the line -how did Missy end up there -etcetera and so forth. It just undoes the myth of Time Lords if everyone knows of them – has prophecy over them (Pandorica/Silence -*yawn*)
Oh well.
Peter Capaldi is still excellent, and I very much enjoy watching him, and the story could have been a bit tighter around The Vatican, the new menace’s and more Doctor, as these parts are good.
I am, though, looking forward to catching up with the second part when I can, at some point …..
So, as a recurring theme from me – an O’K episode, in an O’K season.
Ta !!

May 21st, 2017 - 8:49amI really enjoyed this, it was interesting. However, as long as ALL the loose ends are tied up properly and not just left or have some weak reason for being there. If that is done then I’m sure the second half of season 10 will be ok too.
The Master
May 21st, 2017 - 7:27amHope to see some menace from missy , you was very subtle but I’m sure she will strike again ! Big time ! The Master always has grand schemes! Unusual episode bit confusing but good !
Exterminator
May 21st, 2017 - 12:56amI’m glad I’m not the only one that’s a bit confused after watching Extremis. Typical Moffat trying to be clever and making it over complicated. It would’ve been better to set this in medieval times rather than modern day.
Why did the pope need an interpreter when I thought the Tardis translates all languages? Didn’t the sonic get broken in last weeks episode?
I’ve no idea what’s going on with Missy, why was she being executed, when was this in their timelines? What happened on Skaro the last time we saw her?
I loved Bill and Peter Capaldi was just wonderful as ever. It’s so good to have Missy back. I don’t think it’s her in the vault, it’s bound to be Simms master. It’s just like the pandorica when it was Amy Pond inside it and not the Dr. Moffat loves his little twists.
The Temporal Jelly Baby
May 21st, 2017 - 9:39pmI can only assume the TARDIS made a new sonic off-screen. As for Missy, I don’t think we’re supposed to know yet but I think it was shortly after Darillium for the Doctor. I’m certainly intrigued. As for Skaro, this is Steven Moffat we’re talking about. We probably won’t find out. ๐
Can’t answer the Pope question as I didn’t really notice.
Exterminator
May 22nd, 2017 - 7:33pmPeople on the Facebook Who page are saying that the Tardis didn’t translate the popes Italian because it was a simulated pope and a simulated Tardis. The truth monks didn’t know that the Tardis translates every language so couldn’t put that into the simulation.
The Dr would’ve noticed straight away surely, I just think it was a bit of a D’oh on the Moffs part.
Dave Thompson
May 23rd, 2017 - 9:59pmI’d have to rewatch it to be sure but I believe the only sonic we saw was the one in the virtual reality. so I’m guessing it’s still broke.
100,000BC
May 23rd, 2017 - 10:52pmSonics are always being broken; the TARDIS replaces them.
Missy/The Master always manages to escape/survive and there is very rarely an explanation.
Execution took place presumably after Witch’s Familiar for Missy, and between Husbands and Mysterio for the Doctor (Mysterio was clearly a quick trip for the Doc and Nardole before they started guarding the vault, perhaps they were on the trail of the villains, who also featured in Husbands – under the request of River?)
Perhaps the Doctor has turned TARDIS translation off whilst he is at the university? He could easily turn it back on again when he sets off on adventures. Otherwise students who weren’t native English speakers would get a surprise when the Doctor lectured in their native language?
The Living Shadow
May 21st, 2017 - 12:48amLoved the concepts of this episode (and the execution for the most part), it had some very dark elements which I think were handled fantastically for a 7:35/Pre-Watershed TV show. Missy being in the vault is fine by me, as 1. I love Missy and 2. I didn’t have any ridiculous theories about who could be in there (I still think there could be more than meets the eye though..)! I thought the locations and costume were also particularly great throughout too.
The only real criticism I have is how much Moffat loves to trick the viewer. Like at the beginning when it seems like the Doctor will be executed, but then it’s revealed to be Missy. Was that necessary? And I wish we had gotten some hints that we were watching a simulation, like a few out-of-character line from the Doctor, Nardole or Bill, just because otherwise I can’t help feeling a little short-changed. Do people generally like the feeling of being tricked?
I’m not saying a story shouldn’t have twists, but if you’re going to have a twist which essentially renders the entire world (in which the story takes place) fake, I feel like there needs to be hints to the audience that what they are seeing isn’t real. It kind of falls into the whole ‘It was all a dream’ trope of storytelling. The Simulation did have a purpose though, and it has got me very excited for next week’s episode..! I feel like next episode could redeem my problems with ‘Extremis’ if it’s done well.
Doctor Stu
May 21st, 2017 - 12:16amLa la la I’ve got no idea what was going on la la la but seriously I low key-semi possibly also possibly not loved it. Especially watching it this late in pitch black, I may or may not have got severely unnerved whenever the aliens turned up and there were a couple of jump scares in there that got me. One thing that gets to me is nardole, I can’t take him seriously and Matt Lucas cannot do the dramatic scenes they make me cringe but maybe that’s just me. It was pretty dark as well with the mass suicides and the president overdosing. I just hope the resolution is that the world is real in the end because have all of these aliens the past 50 years been visiting and trying to conquer a simulated earth? I think not. Again a lot of questions left unanswered but hopefully by part three they’ll all tie together nicely. Also. Missy. In the vault. Gah. Was expecting something amazing.
Tim M
May 21st, 2017 - 8:05amIt seems Moffat has been inspired with this ‘fake’ Earth by things such as ‘The Matrix’ movies, and even the Doctor Who story ‘The Android Invasion’.
Random Critic
May 20th, 2017 - 11:44pmKind of a confusing start, which slowly grew interesting in its sci-fi premise. Then they took it to ludicrous speed, leaving all traces of sense behind.
“If you ask a computer-simulated person to generate a random string of numbers, it won’t truly be random. If all the simulated people are part of the same computer program, then they’ll all generate the same string, the exact same numbers.” Lol! No, no, no, no, no! I shouldn’t laugh, but someone actually put pen to paper for this, and I’m supposed watch these peeps take it seriously and take it seriously myself. No chance.
“There’s always one thing you can do from inside a computer…you can always email.” The Doctor is sending an email to himself from inside the simulation. Why would that email ever reach the real Doctor outside the simulation. Surely it would only reach the simulated Doctor, as does tend to happen when you send yourself an email, never mind the likely size of that attachment and any attachment size limits that may be in play on mail servers within the simulation.
I really don’t know what to make of the “blindness”. The psychic shades thing comes off as weak, especially with the half-baked Terminator HUD visuals. If you can somehow determine gender, age, height, weight, heart rate, temperature, and probably their star sign, surely it’s not a stretch to at least show a simple silhouette of a person using, you know, their temperature…that’s actually being read???
It was a very funny episode, and not just because of the Pope, Missy, or the executioners.
No trial for Missy? How does that work?
doctor no more
May 20th, 2017 - 11:38pmWhat a load of mumbo jumbo.boring and terrible story which never got interesting. Sorry but if you watch and are a fan of the 9th 10th or 11th doctor there’s no comparison, I’ve not watched one episode yet with the 12th doctor that I can watch a second time because I thought it was good, bring on a new doctor and writer, I am looking forward though to seeing john simm again,he should have been back from the start instead of missy.
The Outcast

doctor no more
May 21st, 2017 - 11:32amCan hardly remember heaven sent. Like I said there’s been no stand out episodes that I’ve thought fantastic I will have to watch that again, and I’ve said before please get Murray gold back doing the incidental music there’s no big themes or music thats been used in other series.
Sally Gunther
May 21st, 2017 - 4:43pmEh? Murray stills does the music
catnip
May 20th, 2017 - 10:56pmI literally dont have a clue what the hell all that was about…. but im not sure if i hated it or liked it. The monk things were like something out of the Walking Dead or a kind of vintage 15 or 18 cert. Horror film.
It was really good to see Missy back, although nothing about her clever idea on Skaro. But was good to have her and Nardole reference the late River Song.
From the looks of the trailer, bit much to add a plane crash in isnt it?
The Pyramid at the End of the World isnt written by Moffat is it? Dont think my mind can take much more confusion.
Kane
May 20th, 2017 - 10:58pmI think Moffat has had involvement in the whole three parter, i think he’s co-written the other two

May 20th, 2017 - 11:04pmOh goody(!) Anyone know where i can find a copy of the Veritas? May just need it for TPATEOTW and maybe TLOTL
The Outcast
May 21st, 2017 - 10:18amI sorta feel the same as you. It was basically ‘Android Invasion’ except this time, even the Doctor and co were fake.
The Temporal Jelly Baby
May 21st, 2017 - 10:56amWell, except that there weren’t any androids but a Shadow World created by aliens in order to practise take over the real world. Besides, there are so many episodes of Doctor Who now (it’s been going on since 1963 after all) that there are almost always going to be similarities to at least one of them so I don’t really mind if that’s the case.
whovian from the year 1992
May 22nd, 2017 - 12:40amIm a big Whovian, but im not sure ive seen Android Invasion.
Kane
May 20th, 2017 - 10:54pmThis episode, is everything i love about Doctor Who!
Where else in the universe can you get a 50 minute show that has aliens building a virtual reality world so that they can do a test-run before actually trying to take over the real world?
Bill was awesome, she’s really brought Doctor Who back to life! Peter Capaldi was brilliant, and Matt Lucas was also dare i say to the critics, pretty awesome too! (Anybody else think theres much more to him? Just a feeling I have) Nice to see Missy back, will be interesting to see how she interacts with Bill, also whats the whole Missy is a Cyberman all about??
Fantastic ep, 9/10
JasonisnotaRobot
May 20th, 2017 - 10:54pmVery good episode in my opinion, though the Vault subplot kinda confused the main point of the episode and probably threw off some of the general audience
Tim M
May 20th, 2017 - 10:18pmGreat episode! Very typical Moffatt script though. Jumping back and forth. Leaving more questions than answers. But it was intriguing for grown ups, and scary I would think for the little ones. There was a good amount of humour too, mostly supplied by Matt Lucas as Nardole. Pearl Mackie was excellent as Bill as per usual. I’ve no doubt the fine actress that she is, that she will be most sought after her stint on Doctor Who. Capaldi as well was superb. Another truly great performance.
Trenzalore
May 20th, 2017 - 10:06pmEnjoyed it. The story has Moffat’s usual characteristics that I enjoy but probably won’t miss after 7 years of it.
Usually a story where everything that happens didn’t really happen is a let down but this has to be a first, if the monks have such a big plan they’ve got to make a virtual reality to see if it works it must be something amazing. Missy in the vault would be a let down if we didn’t know Simm was returning – definitely more to it, I’m betting something like when the Doctor opens the vault expecting Missy, Simm walks out.
Mr. J
May 20th, 2017 - 9:34pmThough I liked, I thought it was way too complicated and feels a bit wasted for me, considering 90% of it wasn’t real. It was like the first 5 minutes of an episode that set up what’s going on, but extended to 45 mins and next week is the final 40 minutes of an episode, that’s what it felt like, for me.

May 20th, 2017 - 9:20pmI thought it was quite good and very deep, interesting to see it unfold next week

Thin Ice: 8/10
Knock Knock: 7/10

May 20th, 2017 - 8:48pmEveryone’s seems to be complaining about this episode. HAVE YOU ALL LOST YA’LL MINDS, THIS IS THE BEST ONE IN SERIES 10 SO FAR
The Temporal Jelly Baby
May 20th, 2017 - 9:06pmExactly! I came on here expecting positive reviews but it’s mostly just complaints. It’s clearly the most divisive episode yet this series.
Sally Gunther
May 20th, 2017 - 9:43pmI enjoyed it but think they should have given missy a miss, not cos I don’t like her but to keep it fresh with less returning faces.
The Outcast
May 21st, 2017 - 10:21amIt was just there for me. Failing to see how this is ‘inventive’. It seems like a mix of ‘Android Invasion’ and the Matrix films.
Alex Who?
May 21st, 2017 - 6:44pmYeah it was good but I think Oxygen is still the best so far.
Bill M
May 20th, 2017 - 8:45pmPoor and more than a little confusing. I mean, if the aliens wanted to run a simulation of Earth to help them conquer it, why would they put a book inside the simulation that effectively told everyone that nothing was real ? Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of it ?
Olliander Woods
May 20th, 2017 - 9:35pmWell no because the people who read the book are all people clever enough to work out that it’s a simulation. Therefore the monks placed the book in the simulation to work out which people were intelligent enough to be a threat in the real world.
The Dalek Whovian
May 20th, 2017 - 8:42pmWell that got deep didn’t it?

May 20th, 2017 - 8:27pmI found this episode so boring that I wanted to read the vertias.
WFK DVD Collector 17
May 20th, 2017 - 8:26pmMuch better then expected. Though I thought that the cliffhanger was a bit of an anti-climax.
Matt Parker
May 20th, 2017 - 8:26pmTypical Moffat,,,,,taking the series back to gobbledygook land. Good acting but was checking how long was left 15 minutes in to it…..disappointed, but next week looks good.
Whorules
May 20th, 2017 - 8:26pmBrilliant. And it didn’t actually confirm missy is actually in the vault. She probably is, but as boo boo pointed out below by asking ‘is she?’ There is no guarantee that moffat isn’t messing with us and tricking us into assuming she is still in there.
The Outcast
May 21st, 2017 - 10:23amIt is Missy. The 12th Doctor says ‘Missy, I need your help’ when talking to whatever is inside the vault in this one.
Tim M
May 21st, 2017 - 2:38pmWell, the Doctor thinks it’s Missy in the Vault. The viewers are meant to think Missy is in the Vault. Moffat tells us it’s Missy in the Vault. Knowing Moffat though…he lies. The fact we haven’t actually seen or heard her in the Vault, means it could be anything…that can at least play a piano. I’m reminded of the Pandorica. When the Doctor was placed inside, but when the Pandorica was opened it was Amy. So, Moffat does have previous.
r1ch1e
May 20th, 2017 - 8:25pmUntil I actually see Missy walk out of that Vault I will not be convinced that it is Missy in there! Bare in mind we haven’t even seen her go in yet! I think there is still slot to happen.
As for the episode itself I thought it was very different to the rest of the series. I have really enjoyed the episodes that preceded it but this episode had my heart racing more than any other. And that is a good thing. 9/10
Jordan Scott
May 20th, 2017 - 8:24pmWell, this has dropped back to series 9 standards. Vault reveal was underwhelming and badly handled, episode was confusing as hell and nobody else in the room understood what was going on – even I barely did! Also it was pointless and may as well not have happened at all. ๐
The Temporal Jelly Baby
May 20th, 2017 - 8:27pmYou’re entitled to your opinion of course, but I wouldn’t say it’s at all pointless. It’s just set up the plot for the next 2 episodes. And, in my opinion, it did that in style. Obviously you disagree with that and that’s OK, but I don’t think it was pointless.
Matt Parker
May 20th, 2017 - 8:27pmKnowing that John Simm is in the series somewhere I wouldn’t be too sure we’ve seen the reveal just yet
Robin
May 20th, 2017 - 8:39pmI agree this was back to series 9 stuff. Thought it was ok definitely the worst episode yet of this series and yes there will still be a twist in the vault
Jordan Scott
May 20th, 2017 - 8:50pmNot completely pointless no, but it basically ends where it started except this time we know stuff that we didn’t before. Moffat has said in an interview that Missy is definitely in the vault so I’m not sure what possible twists there could be. I just hope this three parter is worth it and not just a waste of three episodes.
The Temporal Jelly Baby
May 20th, 2017 - 8:21pmAmazing episode! Tense and gripping throughout. Easily the best episode this series so far for me.
Doctor909
May 20th, 2017 - 8:20pmI thought that was weird, personally. I’m not sure if I enjoyed it. It was a good idea but I just feel it was odd and I can’t place my finger on why.
Mark Belsom
May 20th, 2017 - 8:20pmAll I’m going to say is what an episode,loved it.

May 20th, 2017 - 8:19pmI was so disappointed when i found out missy was in the vault!!!

May 20th, 2017 - 8:20pmis she?
Mark Belsom
May 20th, 2017 - 8:20pmThat’s the only thing that let the episode down,so obvious.
The Temporal Jelly Baby
May 20th, 2017 - 8:23pmOh, I was already 90% sure Missy was in there. Didn’t spoil the enjoyment for me! Besides, most of the episode wasn’t about the vault.
r1ch1e
May 20th, 2017 - 8:26pmI don’t think she is in there! Red herring Moffat style!!!

Turns out she hasn’t been there for the last two episodes!!!!
The Outcast
May 21st, 2017 - 10:25amNah, its going to turn out Missy was a robot or a Time-lady hypothesised by the Master so he can do his thing in peace.
Stop That TARDIS
May 25th, 2017 - 2:50pmAs an answer to Booboo and all:
“There is still punishment and incarceration for Missy, as the Doctor places her in the vault for 1,000 years, but she is just as extraordinary, insane, and alive as always โ “I’ve just been executed!” she barks at the guards, “show a little respect.” Now the Doctor must try to keep his secret and dangerous detainee imprisoned in the vault, and, harder still โ try to make her reform” Yup confirmed by the official site, she’s in the vault. ๐
The Outcast
May 25th, 2017 - 3:22pmYeah, Missy is definitely in there, remember when the Doctor went in there in ‘Knock Knock’?
