What Did You Think of The Name of The Doctor?
What Did You Think of The Name of The Doctor?
Clara receives a letter summoning her to a mysterious meeting, where she is given a message for the Doctor.
The meaning is uncertain, but when an enemy strikes the Time Lord is left with no choice but to travel to the one place in time and space he should never go – into a deadly trap that threatens to unravel his past, present and future.
Now that the final episode of series 7b has aired in the UK what did you think? Was it the best episode ever or just average.
Mels
May 19th, 2013 - 1:32pmThat was a genuinely interesting and fun episode. The appearance of John Hurt at the end was a suprise to be sure! If anyone was to play a ‘dark’/forgotten Doctor, I think John Hurt is definitely the way to go (he was pretty terrifying and dominating in V for Vendetta).
The Anniversary special should be really good… 😀

May 19th, 2013 - 2:11pmwhen is it,24 of November?
Mels
May 19th, 2013 - 6:09pmI believe they are aiming for the 23rd of November in the UK, since that’s the date of the Anniversary (first time Doctor Who was broadcast). If they stick to the usual schedules it will likely screen in Australia on the 24th of November though.

The Moffat Paradox
May 19th, 2013 - 5:32pmWill we ever have!
Pay attention Moffat will nonchalantly say. Really! Like watching each episode of series 5-7 50 times will be more enlightening as to plot coherence. Whole is less than the sum of the parts! Otherwise someone sum it all up here indisputably how everything in series 5-7 gels together once and for all!
That its even considered necessary sums up the problem. I can recall the thread of plots in series like Star Trek DS9 without remembering every episode in detail. Where’s the thread to follow that cuts cleary through all the episodes here based on all that’s happened before?
Had enough of this stream of consciousness/ throw everything in including the kitchen sink style/ deliberate misleading as to true(if any)meaning to anything style of “writing”.
See “Cold War”as far as I am concerned for how you write a Doctor Who episode never mind series arc that doesn’t insult logical thought when looked at as a whole.
“Silence will fall”! More like “nonsense will end” (hopefully) when Mark Gattis takes creative control.

May 19th, 2013 - 11:59amIf Clara can be anywhere at any time to save the Doctor, doesn’t that sound rather like River?
So, is Clara a young River?
buchanon
May 19th, 2013 - 12:15pmi thought this, but an older river, as we have seen her younger versions.
NigelP
May 19th, 2013 - 12:28pmBut River can regenerate, perhaps Clara was one of those.
If not, then consider:
River was born to kill the Doctor.
Clara was born to save the Doctor.
Tell me that isn’t a concidence.
Given the cast of the 50th (and here is a leap!) Clara is the daughter of Rose and the ‘locked away’ Doctor, brough across the divide to be there to save the Doctor.
Now that is a scrit I would like to see/write.

May 19th, 2013 - 12:37pmBut the original clara can’t be, as we know who her parents are. One of the copies could be, but not the original.
david
May 19th, 2013 - 7:45pmRiver gave up her regenerations to safe the Doctors life… now this of course may be one reason why he’s not left with few regenerations left now… or perhaps the lack of the Gallifrean High-Council will also remove the limit….
Stan Stanmanson
May 19th, 2013 - 11:25amI thought it was pretty good. The only problem was that the Whispermen weren’t much of a threat. :/
Meh, can’t have everything I suppose…

May 19th, 2013 - 11:19amguys i think i have figured out who john hurts doctor is he is the first doctor, william hartnell was the first regeneration, john hurt did something so bad the only way to get away from it was to run away, change his appearance and change his name hence the reason matt smith said that whatever john hurt did it was not in the name of the doctor because it was before he became the doctor
Anonymous
May 19th, 2013 - 11:30amthat makes sense!

May 19th, 2013 - 11:54amJohn Hurt is the ninth doctor that has been forgotten and hidden away because of the bad things he did, this has been written because they couldnt get Christopher Eccleston to come back for the 50th Anniversary so that makes Matt Smith the 12th doctor not the 11th. If you buy the kids Dr Who Adventures Magazine it is explained in there, it was also in Sun last weekend

May 19th, 2013 - 1:07pmSo the BBC have officially announced that then
Anonymous
May 19th, 2013 - 2:31pmThere is lot of theories…him being the “real/forgotten” 9th doctor is just one of them…but not confirmed. John Hurt’s comment that he plays ‘part’ of the doctor and his use of the word “trinity” has spawned another theory that he is something that was created during the 8th/9th regeneration…photos of him in what appears to be the 8th doctors waistcoat and the 9th doctors leather coat seem to back that theory up.
But they are all just theories….who knows what SM has in sotre for us…its going to be the longest 6 months ever!
Callum Edwards
May 19th, 2013 - 3:16pmI think Hurt is going to reveal the Doctor’s name to save 10 and 11 and of course Rose and Clara, this would allow what Hurt said to be valid.
caroline richards
May 19th, 2013 - 3:25pmoooo yeah i had the same thought that John Hurt was before William hartnell. Can’t wait for next series. Hope we find out more about River, love her character, will the Doctor return to the library and “reboot” River?
Anonymous
May 19th, 2013 - 4:04pmAnother theory is that he is The Other….a founding father of the Timelords that later became the one who called The Doctor.
MyLittleTripod
May 19th, 2013 - 4:29pmFor me, the high point in “The Name of the Doctor” was the interaction between Clara and William Hartnell’s Doctor. That and John Hurt. Other than that, the Episode was… Okay I guess.
lepter
May 19th, 2013 - 4:54pmtotally agree with you. That is his seccret. Why he stole a tardis, why he took the name of the doctor. Not in my name. Nothing to do with the time war. Old plot threads have been lost. No exploding tardis, no silence. Thats moffats curse.
Madeline
May 19th, 2013 - 10:34pmOne reason I really like the idea that Hurt is the “man” before he was the Doctor is that I think it has been hinted (I don’t know by whom) that the Doctor is much older and more important than we know, and this makes a lot of sense. Think about this: how is it that the Doctor’s real name is the oldest secret in the Universe? Does that lead you to believe that he is just another Timelord who was born one day, long into the Timelord history? It leads me to believe that he is much, much more than that. Maybe he is The Other, I don’t know, but he’s someone very important. It makes you think that he may be central to the creation of the Universe in some way.
Let me find the exact words… “The First Question, the oldest question in the Universe, that must never be answered.” This whole thing is supposed to be centered around his real name. And in the prequel Clara talks about finding out how he began, so it just really leads me to believe that we are going to find out about his origins and his true identity. (And none of this has anything to do with the Time War(!) which is something in the recent past.)
The origins of the Doctor (the “person” and the title) is something I want to know more about, so I really hope SM and I are on the same page! 🙂
Krista
May 20th, 2013 - 3:28amHe can’t be before Hartnell. Eleven specifically says that John Hurt’s Doctor is “the one who broke the promise”… therefore he would have to be called the Doctor first in order to have broken it. Sorry.

TheDoctorGallifrey
May 19th, 2013 - 4:04pmSo does that mean that it’s bigger on the outside, but then the TARDIS would be the fields of trenzalore!
Matt Smithy
May 19th, 2013 - 4:26pmAt what point? In the episode, he says that what has happened is that the dimensions of the interior have leaked out to the exterior, causing it to grow. Presumable after the episode takes place, the TARDIS just sits there in its final resting place on Trenzalore… quite a depressing thought really :/

me
May 19th, 2013 - 10:42amthe doctor has been running from his secret since the beginning, which means that Hurt’s version of the doctor is pre-hartnell. so matt smith is the 11th doctor, but the 12th version of himself. if jumping in the doctor’s time stream killed the great intelligence, and it was meant to kill clara, how did she survive? plus we still don’t know who exploded the tardis in the series 5 finale, or who the silence are, and the question still hasn’t been asked because it is asked on the fields of tranzalore at the fall of the eleventh, and silence will fall.
Anonymous
May 19th, 2013 - 12:21pmThe question was asked by simeon and answered by river. The tardis opened and they went in it. The great intelligence entered the doctor’s time stream and turned all his victories into defeats, this meant that the doctor never saved any of the universe so in the rewritten time line the universe was destroyed. Vastra said the stars were going out and was the universe ceasing to exist. Silence will Fall refers to Silence falling across the universe, which was what happened when the universe ceased to exist after the great intelligence meddled in the doctors life.
Madeline
May 19th, 2013 - 10:39pmNo. I don’t think we’ve seen the conditions of the prophecy met yet. It was not “the fall of the 11th” (the Doctor did not regenerate or almost regenerate or anything of the sort), and there was nothing we saw in the situation to indicate that “no creature [could] speak falsely or fail to answer.” Moffat always seems to be very clear and precise with what he does, so I don’t think we’ve seen the point at which whatever it is the Silence was trying to avoid is supposed to have occurred.
(I hope I’m not wrong, because if I am, then Moffat is very sloppy indeed! But at this point I don’t think that’s the case. I think he’s got it all planned out to a T. I hope I’m right!)

May 19th, 2013 - 9:25amSo this is my theory. In Nightmare in Silver when they are showing regenerations they show an actual regeneration between 10 and 11. John Hurt could be 10 version 2. Born in battle full of fire and rage. He did try to exterminate all Daleks to ensure the safety of the universe. Maybe something bad happened in the alternate universe and he lost Rose sending him on a misguided crusade. Also it seems since the first Doctor each version gets younger. Odd that John Hurt’s Doctor is old…

May 19th, 2013 - 8:59amUnless I’ve missed something, there hasn’t been any proof that John Hurt’s character is related to the Time War. I’m not saying he’s not, but he could be from other time periods, such as before the first doctor or in the future.
A lot of people seem to be assuming he is related to the Time War, but he seems to have something to do with a big secret, and the Time War thing has really already been done. I’m just not seeing much new and big there. The Doctor killed almost all the Timelords and almost all the Daleks. It’s old news. We saw his guilt and grief with Eccelson. We saw all the drama with the return of Gallifrey with Tennant. How much more can there be to be said about it?
It would make more sense if John Hurt’s character were who he was before he was “the Doctor”. Because the question that’s been asked by Clara is what got him started, and he talks about the importance of him having chosen the name, so why did he choose it? It would make sense if he had chosen it to turn over a new leaf, to begin anew…
What concerns me most, though, is the situation of River Song. The River we are seeing is the one stored at the Library. But the last time we saw her, she was alive and well in a pre-Library state. Does this mean we don’t see her again in this state? She said she would travel with him again sometimes, but we didn’t see her in all of 7b until now, but now it’s not the post “Angels take Manhattan” her…it’s the long-since dead her. 🙁 I love River. She’s my favorite character (not counting the Doctor himself). I really want to see more of her!

May 19th, 2013 - 9:30amNo way. We fans have always known that the Doctor had pain and regret about the time war but have never seen how those events played out. As well we get a ninth forgotten tabooed doctor in John Hirt that will hopefully reveal the unknown life of the doctor between Paul Mcgann and Chris Eccs. Doctors. An excellent linking for the classic series and the new series could potentially be created in the 50th special. My fingers are crossed.

Madeline
May 19th, 2013 - 10:07pmIf you’re right, then I hope Moffat can find a way to make it interesting, because honestly, I don’t want to know any more details about the hellish Time War. The doctor called it “hell” and that’s all I need to know really. I mean, do we really need to see billions of beings dying over and over again in endless battles and things like “the Skaro Degradations, the Horde of Travesties, the Nightmare Child, the Could-Have-Been King with his army of Meanwhiles and Never-Weres”? Maybe you do, but I don’t.

May 19th, 2013 - 8:52amIf this IS the incarnation between the Eighth and Ninth Doctor, there is finally a genuine, legitimate reason to create McGann/Hurt and Hurt/Eccleston regenerations – the BBC should take the opportunity. Obviously, ideally the actors required would participate; but even without their co-operation, it could still now be accomplished…The vast amount of fan-created Eighth-to-Ninth regenerations on YouTube alone is a huge indicator of public demand – what better 50th anniversary gift for their loyalty 😀
…

May 19th, 2013 - 10:48amI’m pretty sure that McGann would co-operate, and John Hurt may well do.vThe only problem would be getting Ecclestone on board, but I believe he could be persuaded to at least film a regeneration from Hurt into Ecclestone.

May 19th, 2013 - 2:43amRichard E Grant gives a chilling performance as the Great Intelligence and makes a bunch of references, and is incredibly chilling. The Whispermen are scary but do nothing, Vastra, Strax, the Doctor, and Clara are brilliant, but Jenny and River Song do little. The glimpses at past Doctors I guess are the best we’ll get at Classic Doctors for the 50th. Also, notice how Paul McGann (Who is believed to have fought in the Time War) and David Tennant (The returning Doctor for the 50th) didn’t appear in any flashbacks, but all the other Doctors did. Hmm… From now on, whenever someone is up to mischief, my response will be “The little Daleks!”

May 19th, 2013 - 1:03amFirst I’ve been pondering a question with prequels being the big rage right now do you think they’ll ever do a series about the early years of the first doctor? Now about this episode I think this was one of the better ones with matt smith, his seasons have been more like a comedy than doctor who. I hate that this looks like a formal good bye from river song she was one of the most interesting characters the series had. Can’t wait for november very curious about what john hurt’s role, is he the 12th doctor or was he a passed incarnation some how returning since nothing is impossible in the doctor who universe.
Mick Clews
May 19th, 2013 - 1:28amPersonally I thinks that John Hurt’s incarnation is a forgotten regeneration (as hinted to in TNOTD)falling between David Tennant and Matt Smith’s Doctors… there was a massive clue in Nightmare In Silver last week….in the scene showing the Doctor’s regenerations they run smoothly from Hartnell to Tennant……from Tennant to Smith there is a gap which features an indistinct regenerating image…..
Dalek: the Supreme
May 19th, 2013 - 2:44amI’m thinking John Hurt is between the Eighth and Ninth Doctors, and was the one who ended the Time War.

May 18th, 2013 - 11:52pmFirst episode I have enjoyed in quite some time and my personal opinion is that, along with others, this season of Doctor Who has gone downhill and therefore I think that it is time that Moffat should step down as show runner. This also means that he could focus more for example SHERLOCK! I feel like Doctor Who needs to be more like what it used to be, with interesting stories that have good thought out endings.
The Cliff hanger got me though. I undestood everything and then BANG! I think that John Hurt is possibly the 8th Doctor, just really aged. If you look at the clothing between them it’s quite similar and as the 8th Doctor was responsible for a lot during the Time War, it is understandable why he would be the Doctor’s’ Secret.
Sorry this was quite long.

May 19th, 2013 - 12:17amif they are not careful it will end up being taken off the air again as it was in Colin Baker’s day! I enjoyed the William Hartnell and Tom Baker cgi effects: shame they don’t use this technology to restore lost episodes of the classic series: the Daleks’ master plan for example? I choose to believe that John hurt is going to be a darker version of his own alter ego and is an up coming menace to be treat like the master: we will all be theorising until November!

May 19th, 2013 - 2:45amI think Steven Moffat and Matt Smith are some of the best changes that the series has had so far, but I do agree Moffat should step down as Executive Producer after the 50th, as it seems like a great way to go out with a bang.

May 18th, 2013 - 11:41pmProducers can get over the 13 doctors scenario as River Song transfered her remaining regenerations to the doctor. I beleive Hurt is most likely to be the first incarnation with his real name but a baddie doing bad things which is why he changed his name to the doctor, stealing the tardis and spending the rest of his life running away from his past.

May 19th, 2013 - 8:30pmAs well as that, the Time Lords had the ability to force the Second Doctor to regenerate, and they gae the Master more regenerations. Could be that the limits on regenerations are imposed by them rather than being biological, so the Doctor may have unlimited amounts.
