Are they going to call Peter Capaldi the 12th doctor, 14th doctor or the 1st doctor (cycle 2 version)?

Officially, his the 14th Doctor, and the 1st of the new 13 Doctors as part of his new regeneration cycle given to him by the Time Lord’s, but he’ll be known to us instead as the 12th Doctor.

He is kind of the 12th doctor as mr hurt was not a doctor he was the war doctor and ten was one doctor but he is in his fourteenth body so 12th doctor 14th body

He may have been known as the war dr, but if you watch the end of the episode, both david tennant and matt smith including john hurt all refered to him as the doctor. So calpaldi is the 13th dr

What is wrong with you people the regeneration orange/gold glow is what killed the Daleks it did not happen in a quick flash it was a slow process which took time for him to get down to the tardis and he had time to remember Amy Pond and then he changed it was not in quick at all.

I always look forward to every regeneration and this was the biggest let down ever. There was the long, long goodbye, and then in a split second he changed. Far, far too quick. Should have kept it like the previous 3 regenerations…more exciting. I didn’t even have the same emotional feeling like I experienced when David Tennant Changed to Matt Smith. Some younger viewers might have liked the story, but for us veterans of Dr Who…. a dissapointing finale.

I wouldn’t have minded seeing the same glow but in different colours, like greens or blues. A completely different effect would have been good as well, but the good thing about regeneration effects so far is that you have always seen the transition between the two. However, here, one moment it was Matt and the next it was Capaldi. That effect doesn’t work for me.

I’m going to be honest… I wasn’t really fond of it. Bit of a disappointment after all of the hype, rushed, all over the place… The old Doctor’s prosthetic was frankly appalling as well.
His farewell, although shorter than Tennant’s went on forever and felt a bit forced. I’m going to say it was about standard fare, 7 out of ten. I may warm to it in the future, but but I’m not holding out hope.

And the regeneration scene was a disappointment as well. Moffat basically made regeneration into magic, destroying Daleks, and the flash between Smith and Capaldi was disappointing as well. I always liked the slower tranformation, but oh well. At least we can look forward to Peter Capaldi, and I’m very glad Steven Moffat finally tied up his story arcs.

Russell T Davies uses a magic wand every episode or a deus ex machina and made his finals bigger and bigger and better and better every year, well he tried to anyway and he kind of killed the episodes then. But Moffat is now running it into the ground, so YES! Bring back Russell T Davies, the second only person to save it! The first is me! LOL!

    • Dalek the Supreme

      December 26th, 2013 - 4:48pm

If Steven Moffat leaves, they are NOT going to bring back Russel T Davies. The show has to progress and evolve over time, and bringing back a former show-runner to replace the current one is stupid and backwards. If Moffat does leave, I can see Mark Gatiss taking over, though.

    • JJ

      December 27th, 2013 - 11:12pm

I know they will probably or rather most likely get a new one. Matthew Graham (No: Fear Her, Yes: The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People), Tom MacRae (Yes: Rise Of The Cybermen/Age Of Steel and The Girl Who Waited) and Chris Chibnall (Ok: 42, Yes: The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood and Dinosaurs On A Spaceship, No: The Power Of Three), Chris managed Torchwood and Broadchurch, Matt managed Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes, all three are good and capable writers. One writes opener and other writes finale and all bits in between and swap it around a bit the next year or something like that.

Russell Finales: Bigger and better each year, it had to be in his mind.
Steven Finales: The universe is falling apart and times collapsing. Roll on series 8.

Mark Gatiss, not too keen. He’ll just cast himself as the Doctor, he really wants to be the Doctor?

I think steven moffat is a brilliant writer but I do think hes bitten off more than he can chew as producer as well. Maybe time to hand the baton to someone else but just retain his writing duties to ‘who’. Maybe then we wouldn,t have all these convoluted story arcs. Blink and silence in the library/forest of the dead are just 2 of my all time favourites.

i wish Peter all the best in the world in his new Regeneration but i do think think 9 months is a long wait for things to be allowed to go off the boil. perhaps Mr moffit should regenerate himself into another if his to absorbed in other work so we can have an Easter special to keep the flame alive don’t want things to die like they did before that would be very very sad indeed.

    Why all the hate?

Change is a part of life, what you make of that change is what governs your outlook. Which is the central message of the story.

Ironically certain fans of Doctor Who thrive on negativity. You’re entitled to, but remember the world is bigger than you and the people who inhabit that world are now able to compare the Moffat era to the RTD era. Time has certainly shown that the RTD era was awful, with gems like “Blink” and “Girl in the Fireplace” being the shining moments.

Interestingly, these shows are written by Steven Moffat. Also, during Matt Smiths era, the show has been more critically claimed than any of RTD’s woeful work.

In closing, I found “Time of the Doctor” optimistic, hopeful, sad and moving. And I am grateful for Steven Moffat’s hard work, along with Matt Smith’s sublime acting. As for Jenna Coleman, her performance is in another realm of brilliance.

To these people, you have my gratitude for a brilliant piece of television.

To those that hate, remember that hate will eventually consume you. When you implode with hate, just have the dignity to go somewhere quiet and out of the way. And let the rest of the world move on without you.

I enjoyed Time of the Doctor, because it was Doctor Who and because I have been waiting excitedly for the end of Matt Smith’s time and the beginning of Peter Capaldi’s – although Matt Smith has done a excellent job and I will miss his persona, his querky comic genius style. Time of the Doctor seemed to baffle people by taking the excitement and anticipation out of the regeneration. With Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant the regeneration was dynamic, moving, dreadful and amazing. I last night’s episode there was a distinct lack of the build up or the climax that could have been dramatic and stylish. Steven Moffatt has done a good job in as much as it could have been far worse… And “it could have been worse” should never be considered a benchmark for excellence.

Very forced storyline! I felt like Moffat got lost and couldn’t find his way home in the story so he just added everyone and everything in the recipe and just stirred. Only the cake fell flat. The plot was rushed and underdeveloped. I was very disappointed.

I thought it was refreshing to see the doctor aging rather than being taken out by an enemy. There wasn’t the whole sad feel of the episode like the final of pretty much every doctor (other than Colin Baker). I remember the whole sadness especially surrounding Tom Baker’s whole episode and this one showed hope with a whole new set of regenerations rather than always waiting on how they would address #13. I will miss Matt Smith terribly but give Peter a chance…he may surprise everyone!

According to my dad, this special has received a lot of hate online already. And I have to say, I can see why. However, no, I do not think this is a bad episode.
While it has a hilarious start that moves to be terrifying, this episode is plagued by rushed explanations around the middle-half. However, from Handles’ death onwards, I couldn’t have been more happy. The start of the regeneration was epic and made me laugh in sheer giddy joy, and his final speech to Clara is truly heartfelt, and a much better description of regeneration than what was given in The End of Time, followed by a hilarious start to Capaldi. However, while the Daleks succeed as the main baddies of the episode, the other monsters like the Cybermen, and even the Silence feel pushed out of the way. While the story did entertain me in the time it had, it really should have been a two-parter, and gets a 7/10 from me.

I agree, I just didn’t think it was a well mapped and thought out episode and was an appalling send off to Matt Smith’s doctor. My favourite. I think the only good farewell episode of a Doctor of the new and revived series, which was written very well, almost perfectly, was The Parting Of The Ways, Christopher Eccleston’s final bow as The Doctor. The Doctor of the best series so far and my third favourite Doctor.

    • Graham. S.

      December 26th, 2013 - 2:07am

Enjoyed the episode, found it fun and entertaining. As usual further viewings will reveal things that were missed first time round.

Dr Who is still , in my opinion, in very safe and capable hands. The excellent 50th anniversary ep and ” an adventure in space and time” proved this even if half of the eps of Matt Smiths final season were frankly poor.

The trouble is, the seasons are so short they can’t afford for half the episodes to be sub par.

Peter Capaldi has a very tough act to follow after Matt Smith. I hope to god he can fit into the role and that the writing is great.

He is a capable actor, but can he make the role his own and can the writing hit the mark ?

What I don’t want is for new Dr Who to move from ” must see” TV like most if Tom Bakers tenure , into ” not bothered territory”, like virtually everything from old De Who from Peter Davidson onwards…. It wasn’t the actors fault, it was just awful writing .

Oh, ok there was some terrible acting in the form of Adric , Turlough, Tegan, Mel , & Ace. They were never good and never improved.

Lets hope New Who avoids the issues of Old Who…it’s managed to so far…..

David Tennant’s regeneration consisted of him moping about how regeneration is dying, how the next man wouldn’t be the Doctor, and why change is a bad thing. Matt Smith’s did the opposite for me. It was about accepting change and the excitement of being renewed, while still looking back and remembering who you were.

Graham S. Had to say, I love Ace and think she is very well portrayed. She evens has a back story which ties two unsuspecting stories (almost two years apart) together. But it never demanded the audience to be interested in her, sometimes like Clara, which I find much more satisfying.

I don’t think it’s a minority group. Fandom is pretty split about this one…

Depends on your definition of a minority. If I see that about 65% of the fans absolutely loved this and about another 20% seems happy, but had expected maybe a bit more, I think he did fine. He had to kill of a doctor, wrap up quite a few plot points and find a way around a giant problem (regeneration limit). I adore Moffat, and you can have your own opinion but the haters are ALWAYS a minority. Dw has never been more popular, and it keeps changing and growing. Either we change with it, or you’re just gonna grow bitter…

Anonymous I am not trying to shout the loudest, I have a cold for goodness sake! It was just a little spin on the phrase: “Car Crash”, because Doctor Who is being dragged into the ground, deeper than ever before. “The Doctor rised higher than ever before and then he will fall so much further. This is 1989 all over again.”

JJ, it’s all down to opinion. Doctor Who became extremely popular in America during Matt Smith’s run, so you can’t say it’s being run into the ground if it’s become a popular show in a whole other country. Four or five years ago, I didn’t know anyone personally who knew what Doctor Who was, and now I see people who know and love it almost every week. You can say you don’t like it, not everyone has to have the same opinion, but you can’t say it’s been run into the ground when it’s had a worldwide breakthrough.

Dalek the supreme, I like series 5 and 6. Series 5 is my third favourite series and Matt Smith is my favourite Doctor. But series 7 is not the best and that is my opinion and is most peoples. I am just expressing my opinion, I let others express theirs. I try and understand it the best I can, but doesn’t mean I have to agree. I know a few people who liked the 50th and after a second re-watch, it wasn’t as bad as I thought, just a bad story, not thought out properly and I was just very disappointed with it and The Time Of The Doctor was the worst farewell episode for the Doctor and that is just my opinion. You have yours, others have theirs, I have mine, everybody has their opinion and if no one expressed their opinion, then what would it be like. If he didn’t have opinions, different or more or less the same, then we wouldn’t be human. Either way, we are all fans of Doctor Who, but that doesn’t mean we have to be pleased with every episode, because unfortunately life isn’t perfect, or unfortunately, it’s being written by rubbish writers. We have all liked aspects of a different show and I don’t like the show that is Doctor Who of 2013. And that is my opinion. If no one likes it, deal with it!

The regeneration wasn’t that confusing, It looks like he regenerated when he took out the Darleks, only he was holding onto the 11th Doctors look before finally letting go.

Westcountry Daleks, a am guessing. They probably appeared in Thomas Hardy’s books too: Dalek Khan The Obscure, Davros of the R and Far From The Madding Daleks.
