What Did You Think of The Zygon Invasion?
Now that the highly anticipated seventh episode of series 9 has been aired what did you think? Was it everything you had hoped for or not what you expected.
I thought it was really, really brilliant – a massive improvement on the Ashildr/Me story/stories. Well written, looked nice, scary (for the first time in ages! Omitting a couple of moments in ‘Under the Lake/Before the Flood’) – but here’s a thing: does anyone else agree that the old Zygons look much better? Even now? There’s something more organic about the old ones, something foetal, with those sleepy eyes – much scarier!
I omitted a comment about the unit soldiers, surely they should be the best commandos but they all seem to be a bit sloppy. Getting trapped and killed off , just like the red shirt security guard in star trek !!!
I was thinking that especially when Jac says ‘it’s a trap, it’s an ambush” and the soldiers don’t bother raising their guns in self defense and start shooting the zygotes they just stand there and die

A very good story so far. I recognised a few scene locations which have been used already. The tunnel from Flatline, series 8, and the church where the unit soldiers family appear from ( this scene was the only dreadful part I thought) is from the finale of Matt Smith, the time of the doctor. Look back at it and see. 🙂
I pretty much agree with most people that it was a really good story so far. But I do wish they’d perhaps shown us a few “peaceful” Zygons living on earth to really show that it was just a splinter group being aggressive. Also I believe with a Zygon story it has become a tad predictable as I knew at least one of the characters had to be replaced by a zygon at some point. However I think next episode we will discover Kate shot the zygon before it could kill her, and used the communicator to trick the Clara Zygon into thinking she’s dead as we never see Kate’s body and the Zygon would have no reason to change into her.
Loved the part where evil Clara reveals herself and just stands there and smiles as the zygons kill the soldiers. So ruthless hope next weeks episode gives a good conclusion
Should have mentioned this before, but where does Clara really live ?.
We see her living in a flat in ‘Time of the Doctor’, with the exterior of her flat being the same building used for the Powell Estate of Rose, Jackie and Mickey.
Then we see Clara perhaps in another flat or the same one, but just her bedroom in ‘Listen’.
Then it’s a house with a door leading onto a roof in ‘Last Christmas’ which see’s Clara talking to Nick Frost’s Santa and his 2 Elves.
And now, in this new story, Clara seems to be back in the flat we first saw her live in, with the building that was originally in Doctor Who as the Powell Estate being used again.
Seriously, where does Clara really live ?, or is she like one of these celebrities that owns more then one home around the world like David Beckham and his family.
I loved this episode so much. I was looking forward to a NEW zygomatic story but even though it is partially connected to the Day of the Doctor made me love it even more and seemed to provide more context within the script that we already knew so that the story could get started faster. Loved unit, loved Capaldi and Jenna and cannot wait till next week. I think, this is one of the best of the series so far.
It felt like it was written for a Matt Smith story. Capaldi was all giddy, talking to children, getting excited about a plane, hanging round parks and everything.
Well the plane is technically his plane and when he was talking to the children and hanging round the parks he was undercover 😀

A very interesting episode and somewhat appropriate to fit in with currant affairs. It was a great follow up to the events in the Day of the Doctor. You just can’t tell who’s a Zygon. I hope next week’s conclusion is as interesting and exciting.
1) Under the Lake
2) Before the Flood
3) The Zygon Invasion
4) The Magician’s Apprentice
5) The Witch’s Familiar
6) The Woman Who Lived
7) The Girl Who Died
This episode actually made me enjoy Day of the Doctor more.

If i had a choice to watch pre 2010 or post 2010… it would be pre.
Not at all enjoying the Capaldi doctor stories, yes he’s a good actor but
he’s got nothing to play with, can’t any writer go back to the roots of doctor who?
Big Finish have been turning out way better stories than whats on TV, so how come
nothing is as good?
I agree. I see the comments here and think we must be getting a different series over here in Australia. Occasionally we see a strong Peter Capaldi as the Doctor should be, but then it reverts back to the Clara show. I long for a good story with good special effects. Currently it looks like Tom Bakers budget was bigger!!!!!
Please give the new Doctor something to work with.

I am tired now of seeing the guitar in some of the stories. Time to put it somewhere deep within the TARDIS along with the shades and left there to gather aeons of time dust please.
capaldi can play the guitar and is it any different to the 2nd doctor and the recorder?
i have to say i don’t get the criticisms of this series or any of the moffat series i think who is better than ever under moffat’s tenure. (oh and my earliest memories of who are the green death – i was three)

@whorules – I couldn’t agree more…I grew up with Classic Who too and although I loved it at the time, I think post 2010 has been the strongest the show has ever been. The 2005-2010 period was good but no where near as strong as it is now. It’s not perfect (which long running show is?) but there are far less imperfections than any other era. The difference is…its just easier to complain now….also human nature and British culture play a part. People who are unhappy are far more likely to rant and leave comments than people who are happy (who tend to score in the poles and if they do leave a comment, its typically short and sweet). This creates the impression that more people are unhappy than is reality…its a case of the vocal minority (they even start believing they are the majority).

No it isn’t any different to the 2nd Doctor’s recorder, and I know Capaldi can play guitar. It’s that it jars a little with me simply a personal view. I’m not unhappy with the series as I’ve seen many changes I started watching it when I was 5yrs old in ’67. Seeing some of them on the Horror channel is slightly painful to watch in some terms and I find it difficult to believe it scared me way back then. However, it did and I love it for it, just that now some of are “grown up”, lol we find it easy to be disgruntled over things. Ask any adult to associate certain things with each particular Doctor, the answer will come up “recorder”, “yellow car” “sonic” or “celery”, etc and with Capaldi it will be the guitar. I applaud the changes all round. My view is no more than a simple “tutting” noise when something appears to irk me, as you say it’s only “human nature” to do so, nothing wrong with that.

I agree with you Obsie. They are trying to give Capaldi’s Doctor something unique to make him stand out. I hate the glasses and guitar, the Doctor is associated with the sonic screwdriver period not sun glasses. Yes several Doctors have worn glasses but not at the cost of their sonic screwdrivers. Although I dislike the guitar he can keep that, but the glasses must go and the sonic screwdriver return.

good premise but didn’t deliver, best thing about this episode was the clip from day of the doctor, and the ending for the upteenth time we think the doctors dead again, hope he regenerates this time, why would you fly about in a jet when you have the tardis ! and I bet hes a zygon
And what’s with the sunglasses. We need a sonic screwdriver.
What kind of discussion took place in the BBC that lead them to believe DW should move onto a cheap pair of sunglasses. That’s extreme budget cuts.
