I watched the Christmas special (on Christmas night in the Caribbean) and I really enjoyed it for what it was… mainly a heartwarming story based on the classic, A Christmas Carol. Why do people feel that every Dr. Who episode must be about the “monster of the week”? There was no need for monsters in this episode. Although outlandish, I can accept the flying fish and sharks as a plot device. Also why are people harping on Amy & Rory in the police woman/roman century costumes? They made it clear that they were on the ship for their honeymoon and they were fantasy role playing for each other before the liner started to crash AND it was a running joke throughout the episode(just be glad that we weren’t subjected to Rory being in a gimp costume instead). Lastly, Katherine Jenkins’ singing was beautiful.

I didnt like it. It was to confusing. I was so excited weeks before it premiered in the uk because of it being called “A Christmas Crol” and of it being based on Charles Dickins’ novel. Bt the idea of the fish were good.WIsh that the christmas special was totaly different and very exciting. Just like Tennents. But I am not saying that Matt’s first series was bad because I loved it. My favrioute episode was “the lodger”. It was amazing.

Whilst I defend everyone’s right to their opinion why are some people always so quick to berate things as if it’s cool to criticise rather than offer a reasoned review. I’ve just watched the Christmas Day episode again and got so much more from it. So it’s not exactly Dickens or Shakespeare but it still packed a punch and was well written. I thought the writing, the production values and pacing was spot on. Why has everyone got such a downer on Katherine Jenkins? Even in the newspapers they were slagging her off! What she ever done to upset anyone?? Her singing was beautiful and was used in an ingenius way. For her first acting role I thought she did a cracking job especially as she was on screen with the might that is Michael Gambon! The moving dilema of the one you love only having one more day to live and you having the power to choose the right day was very well delivered and elevates this way beyond just a kids show.
Overall I wasn’t disapointed by the episode. It certainly entertained me for the hour and even caused a lump in my throat at times.
Special praise to The Mill, I thought the visuals were cinematic standard, try and watch it in HD and you will see what I mean.
If you compare this to anything coming out of the states at the moment I think it is head and shoulders above it all in terms of standard of writing, production values, imagination and having real heart.
I’m sure it will take its right place in the list of everyones favourites but lets not call it rubbish when it clearly wasn’t. Yes say it wasn’t the best or your favourite but it certainly can’t be described as rubbish as that’s just lazy and undignified of lovers and supporters of Doctor Who and quality British entertainment.
Here’s to 2011 and another exciting year of Doctor Who.

Dont like to complain but…well…i was a bit dissapointed. Thought the whole thing was a bit of a mess although there were a few nice elements – the sets and costumes of the locals were very good. I thought Matt was OTT in the first few scenes but eventually calmed down. I was glad Amy and Rory were kept in the background – i find them so annoying. Amy is no Donna! The story was ok but how lazy was the idea of the Fish just being sharks! I agree with Calum Smith on this one! Could the great Moffat not come up with an alien that could have been a better substitute rather than copping out with a cheap idea! If RTD had done this the fans would have been up in arms. And dont get me started on Catherine Jenkins! The whole episode seemed like an advertisment for her to sing a few times. Certainly not the best Xmas episode but at least the trailer for season 6 looks good…am pleased the Ood are back!

Well… well… well… Steven Moffat has proved he can be an excellent writer when he really puts his mind to things… with the Time of Angels and Blink and other sorts, but seeing as he wrote this when he was stuck back in April due to the volcanic ash, I assume his mind was all over the place thinking “Hmmm, well if planes come crashing down to earth due to volcanic ash, how about a cruise-liner crashing to earth because of some cloud-belt thingy which I didn’t understand a thing about”. What a lazy idea, I thought Steven Moffat was better than that. So uninspirational, especially taking the idea from A Christmas Carol and calling the bleeding story ” A Christmas Carol”. The idea of Amy and Rory being in police and centurion outfit was disgraceful, what happened there? – could they not get a costume in time so they just whipped out any old costume from LAST series and asked them to wear it? Also, this thing about a “clever” twist on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, I don’t mean to be really harsh, but if I was Charles Dickens looking down on that on Xmas Day, I’d be disappointed that my book/film had been made a mess of.
The whole idea of Marilyn Monroe was silly and there was no need for it, neither was the fact that Abigail was brought to life every Xmas Eve to “play” for about half an hour then go back in her little hutch. I’m not sure we even got a logical explanation as to why people were actually locked in those hutch-ey things.
My compliments are that Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Michael Gambon and Katherine Jenkins worked very hard to produce such a complicated, un-make-sense-able story. And what’s with “Half way out of the dark”? And I don’t see why Arthur Darvill was cast – he only had about 3 lines.

    ALTHOUGH….
    SERIES 6 LOOKS… A M A Z I N G !!!!!!!!!!

i think this episode was awful!! They story was rubbish-nothing happened except the doctor constantly unfreezing a woman to play with her. the monster was rubbish-giant sharks-ooooooooh exciting, with AN even worse name-the fish. it was just very uninspired and boring. and amy was in her polcewoman outfit-but we barely got to see her. TOTAL RUBBISH
