At lasts nights press screening of The Doctor, The Widow and the wardrobe Steven Moffat announced “The final days of the Ponds are coming during the next series”.
He added that it would be a heartbreaking end for the ponds and he thinks River Song Will return as well. The Doctor will also get a new friend.

They have not killed a companion yet, even after multiple times LITERALLY saying they would die in the episode only to mean a figurative death. If they bring them back from the “safe”, happy end they were already given only for them to appear in a few more eps and give them a tragic end and then the Doctor a “new friend”… No. No. No. The Ponds deserve better.
