Yeah, WhoCollector, I’ve read the “interesting” article on Cosmic Book News. Isn’t it shocking how the article, clearly written by an RTD hating, anti-woke, disgruntled former “fan” with a stick up his butt about the current show, seems to take a lot of time to say absolutely nothing, using out of context facts and figures to prove their point. I mean, this quote…

“Russell T Davies thought he would stick it to everyone and double down with the woke BS because of the Disney money but we all knew what would happen. When it’s all about the agenda, it’s a massive fail. Proven every time.”

That alone tells you that the writer of the article is clearly biased against RTD, and the fact he ends with “#RIPDoctorWho” is just icing on the cake. He even links to an article, shockingly also written by him, stating that Disney+ itself is failing to attract a younger audience, whilst again missing out context and actual detail as to reasons why.

Fact is, Doctor Who has done just fine on Disney+. It hasn’t blown Disney away but it’s not been a failure either. And, more to the point, it’s done what was expected of a show that has been around for over 60 years. Disney were not expecting Marvel level viewing figures. Especially not given that the vast majority of the DW fanbase is in the UK, where they don’t benefit from the show at all. Do you actually think that the people who made the deal to bring the show to Disney+ were somehow unaware that sharing the show with the BBC was going to severely limit the potential audience? Equally, the BBC would prefer it to be doing better but it’s still doing relatively great numbers for the channel. The most recent Barb figures have Doctor Who at 14th for the week, and more importantly it’s the BBC’s fourth best rated series, after HIGNFY, Sewing Bee and EastEnders. How is that so disastrous?

The writers of articles such as the one you referenced speak of agendas but the thing is that they have agendas too. They’ll continue to pull the show down, making out that it’s failing, and providing alternative facts to make their point, right up until the TARDIS is occupied by a straight, white, male Doctor again.

It would be awesome to see Doctor Who getting numbers like it did during the Tennant era, but these days absolutely nothing gets ratings like that outside of special events and sports. Even then that’s few and far between. The ratings on Disney+ are neither here nor there, and frankly even the BBC ratings aren’t comparable to what we knew before, given the new style release. Both services get to air a well loved show with a dedicated fanbase whilst sharing the cost of producing and distributing it. Don’t believe the doom and gloom mongers. They want they show to fail and so will do all they can you make you think that it is doing. Don’t give them the benefit of spreading their nonsense.

Apparently the show is failing on Disney plus, theres an interesting article regarding it from cosmic book news. So it appears to be performing poorly on its new home. It is strange disney released acolytes poor viewing figures, but they wont make any news about doctor whos – especially after RTD said that disney would ramp up the advertising. Acolyte has poor ratings, seriously poor… and they are afraid to show doctor whos…

Last year I watched pyramids of Mars again. Today I read the Terrance dicks novelisation. In it he describes the eye of horus as ‘a giant ruby. ‘ hmmm. I wonder…

I just found out part of The Empire of Death, apparently Ruby is created using the Time Vortex, except The Pantheon call it the Stitching. As the Trickster approaches, his servants chant the unimaginable … it is as follows… “The power of one, The Power of Two, The Power of Mannnnnyyyyyyyyyy…” – Only Joking, i hope! Aha!

Low overnight figure is unsurprising. I’m open to being proven wrong when the data comes out in around a week, but I reckon the iPlayer figure could be pretty decent with more people than usual having watched it at Friday midnight.

Ah yes, no-one hates Doctor Who more than Doctor Who fans. It even seems to have spread to Big Finish products now. Maybe some of you will get your wish and the show will be ‘rested’ for ten years. And Nigel Farage will be showrunner when it comes back, to make your dreams come true.

As good as the ending was, they broke a record with the lowest overnight stats of the series. Gatwa just hasnt settled in the role yet, for me. I dont know if its the constant outfit changes or his constant flirting. It just doesnt seem very “Doctor” – its almost as if the characters core foundations changed since whittaker took over. Doctors 9-12 all feel like one person, id even argue the classics could be included. 13 onwards, has felt like a very different doctor. Even her attitude and beliefs contradict what pretty much every Doctor has stood for. How many Doctors go around flirting with anyone – Regularly – like captain jack, because so far – its only Gatwa. They may as well have made up a new character, because its missing that “Doctor-vibe” – also, it made me laugh that he heard the name susan and assumed that meant it was his granddaughter. It made me think if that scene in Johnny English, with the badge.

I just cant help but imagine how good this would have been in 2005-2010 RTD era. Imagine this story with Eccleston or Tennant – and you will immediately feel disappointed that it isn’t the case. Insert those Doctors into the story, and it would be an all time great. Smith and Capaldi would also be superior. Gosh, its depressing to think would could have been!

Loved that, back to big build-ups and reveals that’s been so missing for me

Cant wait for next weeks now.

Great episode, maybe one of the best ever.

I never really thought UNIT worked in NEW WHO before, but this was UNIT ar it’s best.

Loved the toying with fans, it wasnt Susan (athough that can still happen), it was the Tardis, it was the other theory, Sutekh.

Looking forward to next week’s episode, I really want Sutekh’s eye colour, to return to green.

No pretty-crying… no flirting or kissing… no singing or dancing… no “honey” or “babes”… and we get he best episode of the season. See, RTD? It’s not THAT difficult 😉

I’ve been very critical of this series but I did enjoy this ep. Wasn’t perfect. Any other season and probably would have been the weakest story but compared to the rest of this series it was a very very small improvement.
The main issue I have is Gatwa. He doesn’t seem like the doctor. It’s hard to believe he has a past, he doesn’t confront his enemies and he’s far too loud. His reaction to the tardis being surrounded by sutekh in the time mirror was terrible. He did nothing but stare at it! Had he forgotten his lines? Surely the doctor would have interrogated it? He always looks away usually to the floor when he’s got complicated lines to say like he’s trying to remember what he’s got to say! And I’m sure I saw a bloody rainbow when the tardis entered unit!! Great ti see sutekh again? Yes! Absolutely! Hopefully sutekh doesn’t end up being politicised.
I hate to sound negative and hopeful what I’ve said isn’t taken as nasty as it’s an opinion.

It’s hard to judge this week as it is half a story. Nothing really happened until the reveal. The doctor still feels off, like Jodies run I don’t feel like this Doctor is very clever. Lots of cast members standing about with nothing to do. UNIT employs two teenagers in their control room? Perhaps why they didn’t notice someone applying under the name H Arbinger. I get tricksters or the master leaving silly clues to taunt the Dr but this villain, messing about with anagrams seems a little beneath him. I’m waiting, hoping next week will explain lots. Maybe even fill in some things from earlier in the season that felt under developed. Waiting but not holding my breath.

Really good. I’m not sure when I was previously engaged to this level in a piece of media. My eyes were glued to the screen for all 50 minutes of that.

Part 2 has a lot to resolve. If it sticks the landing, and it’s a big “if”, then ‘The Legend of Ruby Sunday’ / ‘Empire of Death’ has potential to be up there with my favourite stories.

    June 15th, 2024 - 8:36pm

The problem is, RTD didn’t lay enough pipe dramatically over the course of the series for the final reveal to have much power. So it’s Sutekh. Yeah, okay.
Moderately better than last week’s gay fan fiction, but nowhere near good enough to make me come back next season. Once Empire of Death is done I’ll be happy to wash my hands of this. Thank heavens for the Collection sets and animations.

Where were all the White Adult Males in leading roles in this Episode? I know Disney is all about DEI, (Especially Inclusion). But why does Disneys Inclusion always Exclude White Males?

Better than the rest but thats not difficult. A lot of stuff needs working on. The musics really annoying – as is his bro ‘give me some loving’ speak and non descript outfit. When he burst out of the TARDIS shouting that I almost turned off there and then. I continue to find him irritating. I also wish we could get rid of the Doctor having to apologise everytime something bad happens. The episode could have been pruned. I found it overlong and my interest wavered several times. And I hope we see something that resembles the original Sutekh. If you’re going to have old opponents back we ought to have them at least resemble their original appearance. Sutekh’s eyes glowed green not red. Getting Gabriel Woolf back to provide the voice was a nice touch though. I think the real problem for me is that Pyramids of Mars was a supreme story. Somethings going to have to be exemplary to match it.This wasn’t. Hope the creators of Star Trek’s holodeck don’t claim some credit for the Time Mirror.

What a difference a week makes.
Last week’s ‘Rogue’ was terrible. With a Doctor who would rather be a outrageous flirt with someone he doesn’t know, rather than a Doctor helping his companion and defeating the menace. A complete and unnecessary change in character.
This week’s however was the polar opposite. A much better Doctor in a much better story. It was edge of your seat TV, which built up to a stunning final five minutes. Plus the return of a popular Doctor Who classic villain. Let’s hope the final episode lives up to expectations.

    June 15th, 2024 - 12:43pm

Very much enjoyed that. This season has been very strong. A true return to form after a few shaky years.

  • Doctor Stu

    June 15th, 2024 - 11:50am

It’s Jodie Whittaker all over again. Good ideas that just don’t work with the current cast. Ncuti is a bad Doctor and the whole thing falls apart with his poor performance. This would work brilliantly with Tennant, Smith, Capaldi etc, actors and companions who could pull it off. But with such weak main characters, it comes across as nothing more than a budget Sarah Jane episode trying a bit too hard to be dramatic and taken seriously. Or a fan film, or the torchwood series 1 finale, everyone hamming it up to the point where it’s just that little bit funny when it’s not meant to be. It’s just a shame the ingredients aren’t there, the cast is not able to carry it off.

I’m 100% going to get attacked for moaning but to see people’s reactions, acting like this is top 10 out of 10 quality is just embarrassing, people’s threshold for quality Doctor Who is so low now with its run being so bad for so long that they’ll take anything that isn’t an absolute offensive dumpster fire and act like it’s the best thing that’s ever happened.
