Doctor Who Series 6 begins in Utah desert

Doctor Who series will begin in the Utah desert

From BBC News

The sixth series of Doctor Who will open with a two-parter set in the US, the BBC has announced.

Scenes will be filmed in the Utah desert for a story set in the late ’60s in which the Doctor, Amy and Rory find themselves on a secret summons to the Oval Office.

The episodes have been written by new series boss Steven Moffat and co-produced with BBC America.

Production starts in Cardiff this month with Matt Smith and Karen Gillen.

Alex Kingston will reprises her role as River Song.

Moffat said: “The Doctor has visited every weird and wonderful planet you can imagine, so he was bound get round to America eventually.

“And of course every Doctor Who fan will be jumping up and down and saying he’s been in America before. But not for real, not on location – and not with a story like this one.”

It has been announced previously that series six has been split into two blocks, with the first airing on BBC One in spring 2011 and the second block showing in autumn 2011.

Who doesn’t like when DOCTOR WHO is set out in the universe, or on an alien world, or in some interesting place on Earth?!? That is the show’s ongoing backdrop; all of time and space. But of course, we also have that fondness for when the show is traditionally set at home in the U.K. The truth is that CG effects and the efforts of the show’s wonderful production crew help to make all of the settings fabulous, no matter where filmed.

To paraphrase earlier comments, filming in Utah (like when foreign filming was done for “The Fires Of Pompeii”, or in the classic series with “City Of Death” and “Arc Of Infinity”) is just going to be icing on the cake for the show. When all is said and done, filming in the U.S. is just about getting to film in an interesting and new location. DOCTOR WHO will always remain a British institution, and as a U.S. fan, I wouldn’t want it any other way!

But, I do hope that the crew can make use of the great landscapes in their Utah locations; not only for the opening two-part story that is set in America, but perhaps as background settings for other stories this series. That depends on many things behind the scenes, I understand; not the least being how long they get to film while in Utah. But what an opportunity! Having been to Utah, I can attest that the landscape would make for some incredible alien planet settings!

Oh, and U..S. fans don’t forget – Matt Smith is scheduled to appear on Craig Ferguson’s show November 16th. Ferguson’s show is in L.A., so anyone care to make any guesses as to a possible time frame that the show will shoot in Utah, then?!?

ok for the people who think its so terrible that they are filming in America, get over it, of course we all know the history and it is a UK creation, it’s not going to implode just because they do some filming out here, so what are you saying that the show can go to all these planets and places but to go to the U.S is such a terrible idea, now if this country of mine wanted to make it’s own version of the series then i would be right there with you, the movie we did was mildly entertaining, but a big old mess, and because of it there never was an 8th Doctor season, the BBC should not have given up so much control, a lesson i think they learned from
