Doctor Who 50th anniversary schedule revealed by BBC
The BBC has announced a raft of programmes to mark the 50th anniversary of the first episode of Doctor Who.
A 75-minute special episode called The Day Of The Doctor will star the soon-to-leave Matt Smith and David Tennant.
Smith said: “Hope you all enjoy. There’s lots more coming your way.”
Other highlights include a BBC Two lecture by Professor Brian Cox on the science behind the hit show and the drama An Adventure In Space and Time, written by Mark Gatiss.
The one-off programme stars David Bradley – known to millions for his role as Filch in the Harry Potter films – as William Hartnell, who played the first Doctor in 1963.
BBC Four will introduce new audiences to Hartnell, with a re-run of the first ever story. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.
BBC Two’s flagship arts programme The Culture Show is to present Me, You and Doctor Who, with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC’s longest running TV drama.
A 90-minute documentary on BBC Radio 2 will ask “Who Is The Doctor?” – using newly-recorded interviews and exclusive archive material to find an answer.
For those less familiar with the show, Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide will provide a handy primer.
Danny Cohen, BBC director of television, said: “It’s an astonishing achievement for a drama to reach its 50th anniversary.
“I’d like to thank every person – on both sides of the camera – who has been involved with its creative journey over so many years.”
Daleks The anniversary episode, which also stars Jenna Coleman and Billie Piper, sees the return of the Daleks
Smith has already started filming his final scenes as the Doctor, which are due to air in this year’s Christmas episode. His replacement, Scots actor Peter Capaldi, was announced in August.
Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer on Doctor Who, said: “50 years has turned Doctor Who from a television show into a cultural landmark. Personally I can’t wait to see what it becomes after a hundred.”
CBBC will broadcast a show, 12 Again, bringing together stars to share their memories of Doctor Who.
They include the seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, Tommy Knight, who played Luke Smith in The Sarah Jane Adventures, Warwick Davis, who played Porridge in a Doctor Who episode and Louise Jameson, who was the fourth Doctor Tom Baker’s companion Leela.
Blue Peter is launching a competition giving viewers aged between six and 14 the opportunity to design a new gadget that will become part of the series and Matt Smith will appear on the Blue Peter sofa to answer viewers’ questions.
BBC Three audiences will be encouraged to get involved and vote in Doctor Who: Monsters and Villains Weekend.

Dalek The Supreme
September 22nd, 2013 - 4:04pmThe Second Doctor claimed he was “bored” and fed up with the Time Lord’s unwillingness to explore the universe. I believe his secret is how he ended the Time War. We all know he ended it using something called The Moment, but we have no idea what The Moment was or how it killed the Time Lords and Daleks.
Da Big Friendly Button
September 22nd, 2013 - 5:21pmIn the episode Dalekthe ninth doctor statesd that the daleks burned, which must mean that the moment is fire, or sme sort of explosion. Also if the doctors do indeed go back into the time war then it could mean the possible return of the master.
Chris Quigley
September 21st, 2013 - 6:33amAnyone wonder my the master and the doctor went from being friends to enemies,i think a love triangle with the doctor causing the death of the woman they both loved?
RYCBAR123
September 22nd, 2013 - 8:37pmI don’t think it was a love triangle. It’s probably something more with how The Master got the sound in his head and went a bit crazy from it, making him evil and angry, even towards his friends. :3
dalek 105
September 20th, 2013 - 7:55ambooboo are they going to do a non 3d version
MasterKasterborous
September 24th, 2013 - 6:02pmThey’ve filmed it in 3D which means you can watch it in either 2D on BBC1 or 3D on a separate channel.

September 18th, 2013 - 9:53pmclara jumped into the doctor’s time stream, so she should have seen all of the doctor’s faces, even the future ones. which means that if she remembers all the versions of herself, she should also recognise capaldi’s doctor. but then she says ‘ive seen all your faces, 11 doctors’ which means she didn’t see all of the doctor’s time stream :/
the astronaut of death
September 19th, 2013 - 7:23ammaby she only sees the ones up to her doctor
crazy guy
September 20th, 2013 - 6:22pmwell actually i think its only the 11th doctors time stream not the futures it and this time stream is probably where the christmas special is
Dalek The Supreme
September 22nd, 2013 - 4:05pmShe only needed to save the Doctors up to the Eleventh, as far as I could tell. Otherwise she’d see the future, which, as we know, is extremely dangerous.

September 18th, 2013 - 5:04pmI think Clara might be Captain jacks sister or the doctor’s daughter who knows she could be anything she could be the univers

September 18th, 2013 - 5:23pmwe already no who clara is
she is just a normal girl who stepped into the doctors time stream scattering her self through out time

September 19th, 2013 - 6:21pmit would be call if she was the doctors daughter

September 18th, 2013 - 5:00pmI think Bad wolf has something about it and I think the person that John Hurt is playing I think he is the one who ended the the time war and helped the dalekes and I also think Clara is the Doctors daughter (Jenny)
And i am going to see the 50th yeah

September 17th, 2013 - 11:37pmJust been watching Eccleston’s first ep ‘Rose’, which is supposed to be the 9th incarnation’s first outing, suggested by the line ‘not too bad, oo the ears’ in Rose’s flat. But clive has pictures of him at JFK’s assassination and the family by the Titanic etc, and Rose goes with him at the end of the episode, so when does the 9th doctor visit these places? It could be a fair assumption that at this moment in the doctor’s timeline he hasn’t been to those places yet, but Rose is with him for his whole life as that incarnation and its never redressed. Just food for thought….

the astronaut of death
September 17th, 2013 - 8:28pmok please no one hate me I don’t think any doctor should return
it is just that I think it takes the fun ad drama out of regeneration we are saying goodbye to an actor a doctor and I don’t want it to get to the point when we see a regeneration and we all go ” I don’t care we will se him again in a special in a few years”
I think once a doctor is gone he should be gone
but I am still very happy that the 10th doctor is returnig
the astronaut of death
September 17th, 2013 - 8:30pmoh I have changed my mind I love when other doctors meet?
Dalek The Supreme
September 22nd, 2013 - 4:07pmMatt Smith will leave in the Christmas Special. David Tennant is returning in the 50th Anniversary Special. We’re fairly sure Tennant isn’t in the Christmas Special.
Stomping
October 4th, 2013 - 11:19pmTake it you’ve never seen the three Doctors(Omega), or the Five Doctors(Rasalon). They can have their time streams cross if the Timelords deem it. Or if they are pulled together. I still feel the 50th will be a Mawdryn Undead style episode, shame sarah and the brig, won’t be in it. Plus why didn’t SM want McCory or McGain in this? They still look young enough to play their Doctors. As a fan since 1973, I have issuses with the show since SM took over. I honestly think Sherlock means more to him. Stomping

RYCBAR123
September 17th, 2013 - 8:35pmIt would be cool to see Craig again! :3 But I reckon if Vincent returned, it’d take a bit of the sadness from his episode. Winston, yeah, I guess. We’re still to find out where Hitler went when he disappeared from the cupboard though! 😉
Doctor Stu
September 17th, 2013 - 11:45pmI’ve always thought, when ever the doctor meets new companions, the other companions kind of get forgotton. For example when the Doctor is raising army for demons run, he invites characters that have been in the previous episodes the series and when he invited people to his death it was just amy Rory and river but why not Martha or mickey (the companions that are still on earth and not parrallel earths or Donnas situation) also in the synopses of one of the epsiodes (can’t remember exactly which because series 7 part 2 wasn’t very memorable for me) it said (someone is kidnapping the doctors friends etc:)something along those lines so why was it only vastra, Jenny and Strax and not Martha, mickey, Sarah Jane etc: surely it would be easier to track doown companions from the present than to trawl back in time and kidnap vastra Jenny and Strax. It just seems that as the series continues old faces are forgotton.
Anonymous
September 18th, 2013 - 12:13pmdoctor stu, they only kidnapped vastra, jenny and strax because they were the friends that the great intelligence met in The Snowmen.
Dalek The Supreme
September 22nd, 2013 - 4:11pmThe Doctor probably invited his last group of companions before his death because they were the ones he knew he was going to travel with before he died. He brought Rory because his wife was there and he probably didn’t want to endanger any companions, he only brought Rory and people who owed him favors. The Great Intelligence only met Jamie, Victoria, Jenny, Vastra, and Strax, and since Jamie and possibly Victoria would have been dead by then, he kidnapped the closest of those to the current incarnation of the Doctor.

Dalek The Supreme
September 22nd, 2013 - 4:12pmTo me, it does look like something the Doctor might wear. It suits him very well too, and he really does look like he’s been fighting a war.
Dalek The Supreme
September 16th, 2013 - 1:46amI don’t think anyone’s considered yet that what John Hurt is holding could be The Moment, because in The End of Time, the Time Lord prophet says that the Doctor will use the Moment to wipe out the Daleks and Time Lords.

September 26th, 2013 - 2:05pmIt would be interesting, but I’m thinking IF they show it, they’ll just use the 2005-2010 TARDIS, or maybe if we’re very VERY lucky, the 1996 one.

Also we will probably see a lot of the time war which will be awsome 😀
DOCTOR WHO ONE
September 15th, 2013 - 5:30pmDon’t think the Cybermen are in the 50th special. They are said to be in the Christmas Special thou.
Dalek The Supreme
September 26th, 2013 - 2:08pmIt still would be great to see New Daleks vs New Cybermen before they change one of them again. Both have been seen to be more powerful than the previous design, even if one was unpopular enough to be shoved behind their predecessor’s. I’d like to see a more even fight, as Daleks shouldn’t be able to just slaughter Cybermen like humans, but Cybermen shouldn’t just tear down Daleks with ease. Both are highly powerful and extremely advanced, and are more than a match for eachother.

September 20th, 2013 - 1:10amI’m glad it’s not true because Tom Baker looks absolutely nothing like the 4th Doctor anymore….his appearance would be a gimmick….as would any of the remaining actors prior to Paul McGann. Peter Davison only JUST got away with it in Time Crash because they explained his ageing and it was all tongue n cheek anyway. Tom, Peter, Colin and Sylvester were childhood icons….but they should now only ever stick to Audio.

September 12th, 2013 - 5:21pmI think, the thing hurt is holding is the sonic screwdriver that the doctor later gives to river song
DOCTOR WHO ONE
September 12th, 2013 - 5:25pmIt’s not, cos if you recall, when he see’s River’s Sonic Screwdriver, he notices that it’s similar to his, and she said “You gave it to me”, so he had never seen it before until that first time he met her.
Funny thou, we see him giving River her familiar Tardis shaped Diary, but we never actually see him give her her very own Sonic Screwdriver, plus we never discovered how she got hold of Captain Jack’s Sonic Blaster or his [or perhaps a copy of] Vortex Manipulator.
the astronaut of death
September 12th, 2013 - 6:27pmit looks more like a ring
Doctor Stu
September 12th, 2013 - 9:33pmThink its a screwdriver because if you look above the red light you can kind of see the depth of it going back underneath his hand. Also it looks like Rivers screwdriver.
Scott’s TARDIS
September 13th, 2013 - 7:26amYeah, I think it’s safe to say its a sonic screwdriver.
AlphaOmega
September 13th, 2013 - 1:47pmIt’s either River’s Sonic Screwdriver, or the Eighth Doctor’s one (from Dark Eyes) with a red diode…
Anonymous
September 13th, 2013 - 5:04pmdoctor who one, she got the vortex manipulator off of dorian, who said it was off a time agents wrist, with the hand, or something to that effect.
Dalek The Supreme
September 13th, 2013 - 8:52pmI heard a theory she did get it from Jack, sort of. We all know eventually his body withered away until only his head was left (The Face of Boe), so it’s reasonable to guess that Dorium somehow obtained Jack’s hand and thus his Vortex Manipulator.
DOCTOR WHO ONE
September 14th, 2013 - 6:07pmAnonymous – Oh yeah, your right, I forgot she mentioned that, thanks for reminding me 🙂
Matt Smithy
September 20th, 2013 - 5:32pmyou know Jack can grow his body back, right? Don’t ask me how he becomes a big head in a jar (hey, maybe that’s just what age does to you!) but its always likely it could have been from jack. The only problem: Jacks manipulator had a cover on it. The only time River ever has a manipulator with a cover on it is in the angels take Manhattan. So probably not :/

September 12th, 2013 - 4:31pmthey appeared in the name of the Doctor…it would be over kill to have them again especially when we have a short time to get through the far more interesting plot of “who/what is the John Hurt Doctor”
MasterKasterborous
September 12th, 2013 - 4:41pmBut that was only reusing old footage; it would be great if at some point this years the old Doctors (as well as Tennant) could reprise their roles on DVD>
The TARDIS
September 12th, 2013 - 4:45pmI don’t find the whole John Hurt thing particularly interesting to be honest. Feels very contrived to me. And I think they really should bring back classic Doctors, but properly. The Name of the Doctor only featured them through CGI and body doubles, which does a real disservice to those actors from the past.
Dalek The Supreme
September 16th, 2013 - 1:48amI agree with both of you in some areas. I am interested in the John Hurt plot thread, and I like the idea of an incarnation of the Doctor so dark the others hate and fear him. However, I do think it would be a good idea to include the Classic Doctors in the 50th, even though it was great seeing them in some form in The Name of the Doctor.
