Radio Times – BBC Not Ruled Out Female Doctor Poll

BBC Not Ruled Out Female Doctor

From The Radio Times

The new Doctor could be handed the keys to the TARDIS as early as next month, BBC sources have confirmed – with insiders suggesting Matt Smith’s replacement needs to be announced before the Doctor Who Christmas special begins filming next month.

The Twelfth Doctor is expected to first appear on screen at the end of the Christmas special, following the regeneration of Matt Smith’s Doctor.

It would be virtually impossible to keep the identity of the new doctor a secret even if the entire set went into lockdown during filming of the Christmas special, a BBC source told RadioTimes.com.

“The search has begun in earnest and is active now,” the source said, adding that the BBC has not ruled out hiring a woman to replace Matt Smith.

So like so many other we ask the question – yes of no!…

i think it’s almost a tradition to have a man as the doctor now, and i think a woman work may not week, if you compare them to all the male actors.

A woman could be the role, but compared to the male doctors, the whole nature of the show will change. not a small change, a big change.

That quote isn’t from any televised episode, it might be from one of the novels, but they are very questionable in terms of their canon status.

I remember one episode (I forget which one, but I’m positive Matt Smith was in it) where someone asked the Doctor if he could regenerate into a woman, and he said “Please, it’s not the time to discuss my nightmares.”

What annoys me (aside from Matt Smith leaving) is that no Jelly Babies have been considered for the role! Jelly Babies are people too, ya know!

he could be anything, men, wmen, both or indeed nothing. But would it really matter at the end of the day? Well, it probably would most fans wouldn’t be happy unless it was the “nothing” option, regardless of gender.

Indeed it would be weird, but what you need to remember is that the Doctor is Gallifreyan, and the possibility does exist for it to happen. He may be a man at the moment but that means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things.

In fact just to make things even odder, it can actually happen in real life, clown fish can change from male to female and carry on as though nothing has happened (you’ll never watch Finding Nemo in thh same way again).

I don’t have a problem with a woman playing the role, I just don’t trust the writers to tackle it correctly, which would be to have a couple of jokes after the regeneration then totally ignore the fact afterwards.

If you can’t treat a woman the same way a man would be treated then the whole point in allowing it in the first place is defeated. Same goes for deliberately casting a woman in the role, both genders would need to be fairly judged.

I work in a secondry school, both male and female students are very very opposed to a female doctor. These kids know the doctors history ie hes a grandad ect ect. It would be wrong and most have said they would stop watching (honestly).

Yes, it would be something fresh, but I don’t think it could hold itself up for a long time. It would be too great a change and lose lots of viewers. It’s fine for the show to reference other films and tv shows, but one thing it doesn’t need to do is become Orlando.
