SFX can exclusively reveal that the next series of Doctor Who will mark the return of one of the Time Lord’s greatest foes, unseen in the series for nearly 40 years.
“We’ve got the most fantastic episode by Mark Gatiss,” executive producer Caro Skinner tells SFX, “where we are bringing back the Ice Warrior… on a submarine! It’s a really wonderful kind of ‘bunker’ episode, and a classic monster which Mark has brought his own inimitable twist to.”
Armed with lethal sonic technology, the reptillian warmongers first tangled with Patrick Troughton’s Doctor in 1967′s “The Ice Warriors”, returning two years later in “The Seeds Of Death”. Jon Pertwee’s incarnation encountered them in 1972′s “The Curse Of Peladon” and 1974′s “The Monster Of Peladon”. Traditionally seen as one of the show’s “Big Four” pantheon of monsters – along with the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Sontarans – the militaristic Martians won a throwaway mention in 2009′s “The Waters Of Mars” but have remained unseen in the 21st Century series.

February 15th, 2013 - 6:19pmI dont want a pure redesign. But tweaks would be good as the old models back then were only really costumes that were a bit too obvious. One of the best at the time though.

TIMELORD3 Everyone I’ve spoken to about it DOESN’T want them redesigned. What’s the point of bringing back the Ice Warriors, unless they look, sound, and act like Ice Warriors?

February 12th, 2013 - 7:47amI agree, there were rumors that they were going to return and I wanted to keep it at that so that I would be sqeeling with fanboy awsomeness (I hope I’m not the only one to do that when classic monsters return… :/ ) and although a am really exited for the episode now, I also wish they kept it secret. I can see why they did it though, it would be pretty hard to do trailers for the episode without showing them 😀

If they could for once, leave the design concept alone,and only tweak it, then everything would be fine, I dont want another disaster with the silurians, they would have looked fine with those big eyed masks on, but for them to be able to take them off only to look even more human, just ruined it for me!

February 11th, 2013 - 8:38pmthats not an ice warrior, we dunno what it is, and considering they’ve only just officially announced that they’re in it, i dont think they would have shown them fully in the trailer at christmas, however, you can see and ice warriors arm raise and clutch a man by his throat and either water or ice pours up from his arm!!

Personally if they are redesigned I woul like the sone gun to be seperate to the arm. It would look good if it was a small metal tube clamped onto the writh with another piece of metal. To add detail there could be a couple of blue of red wires coming from the side of this device. Thats just my ideas but what would you all like to see?

February 11th, 2013 - 5:44pmNo fan of the Ice Warriors, bit silly calling them Ice Warriors when the don’t even look like warriors. Warriors are warriors when they have swords, spears etc, not laser guns attached to your wrists.
