What did you Think of Asylum of The Daleks?
What did you Think of Asylum of The Daleks
The first episode of series 7a has finally aired so what did you think?, was it the best episode ever or just average. Vote below.
Matt Smith returns as the oldest time-traveller in the universe. The Time Lord, Amy and Rory are kidnapped by their oldest foe the Daleks and forced on a seemingly impossible mission β to enter the Asylum, a planetary prison confining the most terrifying and insane of the deadly aliensβ kind.
From the official site…
Steven Moffat, Head Writer and Executive Producer, thanked fans and the press for keeping the secret:
βI hope you all got a nice surprise when Jenna popped up in Doctor Who several months early. If so, that surprise came to you courtesy of the frankly magnificent ladies and gentlemen of the press, and of the many Doctor Who forums and blogs too. This show has been seen at four separate screenings, across four different countries and yet not one person gave one spoiler. From all of us on Doctor Who, a heartfelt thank you for helping us tell our story.β

September 3rd, 2012 - 7:29pmI’ve just been reading about ‘City of the Daleks’ and ‘The Only Good Dalek’ inside my copy of the Dalek Handbook, and it seems to me that both these stories clearly are set between Victory and Asylum, plus the only good Dalek would suggest the Time War Daleks from Asylum come from the same story, which would explain why Asylum seemed to have so many of them.
Ive never played City of the Daleks or read the only good Dalek, but if concidered canon, then it explains how Asylum has both Daleks, so they fit into Doctor Who like this –
VICTORY OF THE DALEKS
CITY OF THE DALEKS
THE ONLY GOOD DALEK
ASYLUM OF THE DALEKS

September 3rd, 2012 - 8:20pmThat as may be- fans of the TV series who’ve not seen these other stories/games/whatever will have no idea why things don’t tally from previous series stories….
Any decent Writer/Producer should have surely considered this when producing a hugely popular tv series with such a large audience (many of whom will only know the stories of the SHOW!)- and treated the online game as stand-alone & either stayed true to previous story arcs in the show, or offered believable explanation to the changes we fans have seen…
Moffat did neither!

September 3rd, 2012 - 7:26pmdid you notice before rory turned the dalek head from one camera angle the dalek didnt have ‘ear lamps’ and from the other it did!?!?!
Jason doctorwhoone
September 3rd, 2012 - 7:51pmYeah, the mistake is mentioned on Doctor Who Wiki, and so are the following mistakes from the same episode –
The Doctor has a plaster on his finger that keeps disappearing and reappearing.
In the ending scene where The Doctor is in the TARDIS, you can see the overhead camera reflected in the glass floor next to the console.
When the Doctor, Amy and Rory are in the Dalek Holding Cell, the circular platform they are standing on lifts. on one shot, it shows them and the Daleks looking all around them – the Doctor is looking towards ‘us’ – but in the next shot, the Doctor is looking upwards into the Dalek Parliament.
When the Doctor says “It’s Christmas!” in the Dalek Parliament, the shot shows bronze RTD era Daleks and a few Paradigm Daleks. Except the shot has been reversed and the suckers are where the guns should be, and the guns are where the suckers should be.

September 3rd, 2012 - 7:22pmwe just dont know yet, they could be relatives, there is a splintered through time suggestion like scarlioni, there has to be some unusual connection though
Jason doctorwhoone
September 3rd, 2012 - 7:25pmNo. Jenna was playing a completely different character. Clara, who she will be playing from Christmas 2012 onwards, is the name of her actual character who will be replacing Amy and Rory to travel with the Doctor in the Tardis.
Clara is said to be from the Victorian era, so Oswin who we saw in Asylum is a descendant from many many years later, making Clara her great great great grandmother or some other relation.

September 3rd, 2012 - 12:21pmThere are NSD in the alysum because they where put in there before ‘Dalek’.
Jason doctorwhoone
September 3rd, 2012 - 3:34pmTrue, but there is a continuity mistake made when the Doctor see’s some Time War Daleks in intensive care. Oswin says they came from Spiridon, Kembel, Vulcan etc, but they are the wrong type of Dalek, only classic Daleks where seen on those planets, so Daleks from the classic series should have been in the intensive care scenes, not the Time War ones.
And Steven Moffat calls himself a Doctor Who fan.
If it was me, that mistake would never have been made it onto TV π
doctor doctor
September 3rd, 2012 - 10:01pmcould it be that the dalek creatures inside the casing are given a new outer shell when they are too badly damaged or are upgraded from time to time, this would explain why the intensive care daleks looked like newer daleks but had (classic) old insides.
or maybe i’m just trying to find a reason to make a poor episode seem a bit better than it was.
Jason doctorwhoone
September 3rd, 2012 - 11:13amFor a laugh, and cos a lot of us fan’s tend to get a bit miffed everytime someone miss spell’s Dalek like ‘Darlek’ or ‘Darleck’, Ive just uploaded a couple of funny uploads onto Deviant Art, one of them features Bart in trouble with a Red Drone Dalek, the other is Ronson from Genesis of the Daleks getting exterminated for spelling Dalek with an ‘R’.
You can find them as –
There’s no ‘R’ in Dalek
Dalek + ‘R’ = Extermination

September 3rd, 2012 - 10:58amGood News! Neil Gaiman is writing another episode! He is on the third draft!
Jason doctorwhoone
September 3rd, 2012 - 11:06amAhh the man who wrote ‘Dalek’ – excellent !! π
Maybe he should be in charge of Dalek stories from now on.
Maybe they could get Russell T. Davies back as well, not as Executive Producer [all thou I am aware so many fan’s would rather have him back instead of Steven Moffat in charge] but as a writer for the series, and have him do the Dalek stories from now on if not Neil Gaiman.
Give me a Dalek any day
September 3rd, 2012 - 11:09amUmm… Neil Gaiman write The Doctor’s Wife. Robert Shearman wrote Dalek.

September 3rd, 2012 - 9:48amA brisk and well structured episode and Jenna is superb. But as someone who has seen Dr Who since it started the daleks were originally dying mutated little monsters who were placed into a life support armour which is the pepper pot we all love. Then their creation was story was changed with Davros and now organic life forms alive or dead can be nano infected and develop into daleks. Huh?
Hellbelly
September 5th, 2012 - 7:47pmThe Nanocloud only turned organic life into Dalek “Puppets” (like Harvey and the other dead Alaska crew).
Oswin wasn’t converted by the Nanocloud but by the Daleks in the Asylum (presumably in a similar way to how Davros converts humans into Daleks in “Revelation of the Daleks).

September 3rd, 2012 - 11:10amOswin Oswald. Clara Oswin, if she is from the Victorian era, is Oswin Oswald ancestor it would seem, so Oswin is descended from Clara, both identical in appearance but not the same character, just played by the same actress, and a brilliant funny actress too π

September 3rd, 2012 - 12:19pmmaybe it explains in the xmas special & moffat did say that the daleks might return in the christmas special so there could be a connection some where in the episode.
Jason doctorwhoone
September 3rd, 2012 - 3:38pmNo Tom, Oswin died in Asylum as a Dalek, it’s Clara who’s the name of the character Jenna-Louise Coleman is actually going to play in Series 7 starting with the Christmas Special.
Basicly Jenna is doing the same thing that Freema Agyman did. Played Martha’s cousin Adeola in the Series 2 finale, and then return 2 episodes later as Martha Jones, completely different women but played by the same actress.

September 3rd, 2012 - 3:50amBooboo Can you please tell me what happened to “CLEANSE THE UNCLEAN TOTAL EXTERMINATION!” and then two seasons later the gold daleks and the paradigm ones are like the best of friends.I got a good feeling it was because of production the paradigm ones are almost twice and big which means x2 more work and technically building daleks on top of each other also if you seen the Victory Of The Daleks confidential the paradigm dalek had trouble getting through the doors so it might of been because of that too.Where did the so called “Parliament Of The Daleks” come from, where did all the daleks come from, how come tons of dalek ships are still left? Also I thought Skaro was destroyed and timelocked. How did the cult of skaro survive???!!!!!!!
Jason doctorwhoone
September 3rd, 2012 - 7:31amIt’s very confusing how suddenly there are so many Time War Daleks all of a sudden when we was ment to believe that the 3 from Victory where the last ones of that type of Dalek.
It seems the comic-book novel ‘The Only Good Dalek’ and the adventure game ‘City of the Daleks’ takes place between Victory and Asylum, so maybe one of them explains why there are Time War Daleks and their ships, including the Dalek Parliament ship.
Skaro was destroyed in the Time War, but not blown up, just a wrecked world.
The Cult of Skaro vanished from the Time War with the Genesis Ark and first appeared in the Series 2 finale.
tom
September 3rd, 2012 - 12:32pmive played City Of The Daleks & i can’t remember anything to do with the bronze daleks surviving. i can understand why there was some in the asylum but not why there were so many in the ship. how come the special weapons dalek was in the asylum when it wasn’t insane in Rememberence Of The Daleks
Jason doctorwhoone
September 3rd, 2012 - 3:42pmIt’s been suggested that there was infact more then 1 Special Weapons Gunner Dalek, and Davros happened to just use 1 of them, so the one in Remembrance is the not the same 1 in Asylum.
What is confusing is the origin of the Special Weapons Gunner Dalek.
Some say that the Renegade Daleks created it against the Imperial Daleks, and that Davros somehow reprogrammed it and had it’s casing repainted white and gold to be one of his Imperial Daleks.
Another accounts claims that Davros took the design of his Daleks further by creating the Special Weapons Gunner Dalek himself.
Either way, it’s an awesome Dalek π

The Time Lord of Doom
September 2nd, 2012 - 9:31pmJust watched it again, and I enjoyed more than last time! π
Two questions though, but probably obvious:
1) Why did they send The Doctor to the Asylum? To destroy it?
2) Why by putting down the force field, the asylum was destroyed?
Sorry for asking these, but it was a very confusing episode!
booboo
September 2nd, 2012 - 9:57pmthats what they wanted him to do, bring down the force field so they could destroy it, the Daleks were worried the Mad Daleks would escape
Boodleoo
September 2nd, 2012 - 9:59pmBasically The Daleks sent the Predator (The Doctor) into the asylum to kill the crazy Daleks, as if they ever escaped they could be very dangerous to the sane Daleks. As soon as the forcefield was put down the daleks sent war heads to the planet.
whofan4ever
September 2nd, 2012 - 9:59pm1. To kill the doctor when they destroy it
2. Starship alaska crashed into the planet so all the insane locked up daleks could escape
Boodleoo
September 2nd, 2012 - 10:15pmNumber 2 I don’t agree with they just crash landed there I think getting caught up in the force field.
Jim
September 3rd, 2012 - 12:01amNo because when the dalek says the conversation is irrelevant and turns it off the doctor replies with
No it isn’t. Because if there’s a crashed ship down there that means someone’s got in so if someone got in then everything can get out! Even you don’t want that.

September 2nd, 2012 - 7:37pmDid anybody else notice in the flashback of Oswin being captured there’s a shot of her against a wall with just the arm of a Dalek looming towards her. Perhaps a deliberate homage to the original Dalek story from 1963? π

September 4th, 2012 - 5:07pmi hope it’s not that as an ancestor cannot have the exact same face as a descendant. as far as i know.
Moxx of who
September 2nd, 2012 - 5:24pmSteven moffat needs to ask veiwers what they would like to see in doctor who. The weeping angels are not scary. The infected humans from New earth are probably scarier. U could get loads of terrible infections and die . The weeping angels send u back in tiem and to make them seem scary – break your neck! Bring back design a monster OR use ideas from DWM comci strips. Sticks and stones from Doctor who magazine comic strip was a good story and Forever dreaming. Just change amy to Calra and well a great story.

September 2nd, 2012 - 5:17pmI enjoyed this story. Season openers under SM are much better than RTD, which I always found a bit weak.
Like many I was a bit disappointed that the old Daleks were not used much. Very glad the Telly Tubby Daleks are being used less, they were not great.
Really hoping the Zygons will return next year. They have always been my favourite and scariest monster. I can’t believe they have only been in one story.
Good start to the series. Looking forward to how the Jenna-Louise Coleman story will develop. (She was great by the way!)
The Moffat Paradox
September 2nd, 2012 - 5:09pmThe Daleks need somebody to fight other than the Doctor/Time Lords in a Time War being all thats between them and universal conquest.
These prison camps and humanoids being in dread of them instead of hitting back?
A Dalek- Cybermen war,an anti-Dalek alliance which Earth of the future is part of,the return of the Movellans,Mechanoids or something else new and as malevolent thats as deadlly or deadlier than themselves?(The Silence?)
Jason doctorwhoone
September 2nd, 2012 - 3:40pmOne thing I don’t like about Asylum is that there is no explanation why there are suddenly so many bleeden Time War Daleks, when in Victory there was only 3 of them left, they just appear out of no where.
I thought the whole point of the 2010 redesign was to replace the 2005 incarnation, and that the following story after Victory would therefore feature thousands of Paradigm Daleks.
I take it we are therefore supposed to consider the comicbook novel ‘The only good Dalek’ and the game ‘City of the Daleks’ as canon, both happening inbetween Victory and Asylum.
The 14th Doctor
September 2nd, 2012 - 6:35pmIt’s mainly coz everyone hated the Paradigm ones.
Dalek Strategist
September 7th, 2012 - 3:31amI blame the Dalek haters who kept raging about the new design. If it was me, all the bronze would’ve been Progenitor Drones, all the Drones in the story replaced with Strategists, and the Strategist in the Parliament with an Eternal. Also, the Daleks initially encountered in the Asylum would be bronze and Renegades(And the SW Dalek), and the Daleks from Kembel, Vulcan, Spiridon, etc., would’ve been 60’s and 70’s Daleks
CallMeTheDoctor
September 2nd, 2012 - 3:38pmWhat if Oswin is another River Song? As if the Doctor met her at her Death. So Maybe Oswins Past is the Doctor’s Future? It’s just a theory I just thought of- Probably nothing.

September 3rd, 2012 - 12:36amHow can the daleks not know the doctor isn’t that basicaly what makes doctor who the daleks and the doctor ?
KRYNOIDY
September 2nd, 2012 - 2:47pmNot enough Dalek action!! No talking or moving classic Daleks; special weapons Dalek did not blow stuff up. Again too much Amy and Rory and not enough Doctor (did the Daleks need the companions to go too?), Dalek parliament was awesome but a Dalek PM?! Thats a human thing still that bit impressed me but they did not use the Asylum enough; it wasn’t that scary as it should have been, not any explanation as to why each Dalek was crazy (e.g. why was an Emperor Guard Dalek and Special Weapons Dalek there?)But overall it was a good return for the show and the Oswin twist was clever so I give it an 8/10 the Asylum concept whilst interesting was not used to the full.
The 14th Doctor
September 2nd, 2012 - 6:42pmTo be fair, the setting wasn’t really big enough for the Special Weapons Dalek to start shooting.

I’m not sure that I like what they’ve done to Amy – she seems quite hostile and aggressive.
