Who is Your All Time Favourite on Screen Doctor?
You would think will all the polls we have done over the years we would have asked this question before – but we never have, so Who is Your Favourite Doctor?…
cynthia
December 30th, 2014 - 6:02pmBeen watching a long time have a lot of favourites, Peter Capaldi’s not one of them he’s to old
CJ
December 30th, 2014 - 7:33pmWilliam Hartnell was old
TheExtremeBlueTARDIS
December 30th, 2014 - 8:00pmExactly… “Too old”, then what is William Hartnell? The excuses these days.
Simon W
December 30th, 2014 - 8:04pmWilliam Hartnell was a little younger than Peter Capaldi when he became the Doctor he had to ware a wig.

December 30th, 2014 - 8:30pmThe age means nothing. However in my opinion, the Doctor should always be old.

December 30th, 2014 - 8:40pmHe is old, agreed. But, mate, you shouldn’t judge by people’s age. You are probably gonna be old someday.

January 3rd, 2015 - 8:58pmSir John Hurt was about, what 75, in Day of the Doctor, and he was great.

January 4th, 2015 - 2:44amBeating the dead horse here, but Capaldi is the same age as the First Doctor. I don’t exactly like his Doctor, but the actor’s portrayal and the decision to make him older are decisions I agree with.

December 30th, 2014 - 12:41pmNo real surprises in the poll so far. I haven’t voted myself because I find it very easy to transition with changes in the show and accept and enjoy each Doctor as they come on board…the only one I have really struggled with (and I’ve been watching since 1978), was David Tennant…it took me well into his second series (series 3) to enjoy him play the Doctor….but in the end I didn’t want him to go 😉
I don’t think there has been a bad portrayal, just some appeal to the masses more than others. However, you can judge era’s of the show based on stories. For example, I grew up with the 5th Doctor (even though I vaguely remember the tail end of the 4th Doctor’s era), so he does mean a little more to me than the others…however, that era was arguably the weakest in terms of scripts (barring one or two classics). The ninth Doctor is another great example…the first Doctor for a new generation, but also the older fans that had waited decades for the shows return…and what a fine actor we had…proof the BBC were serious…however some of RTD scripts during this time were awful and a lesser actor would not have been able to paper over those cracks in quality.
In terms of imaginative, daring and original scripts that were not afraid twist and add to the show’s well established mythology, in my opinion the 11th Doctor era stands out…and hopefully this will continue into the 12th Doctor’s era.
Well done Moffat…you made DW interesting again 🙂

December 30th, 2014 - 8:47pmI agree. Your vote is for Matt Smith, right?
The TARDIS
December 31st, 2014 - 7:31amReally? I think series one is one of those few series with no sub-par stories! Yes, there were a few “average” ones but none of them were bad. The others for me are series 4, 5 and 8.

December 31st, 2014 - 10:21amRose, Dalek, Fathers Day and Parting of the Ways were brilliant…the rest were average at best….RTD’s idea of a new monster was a farting green fool…no wonder CE left after one series.
The TARDIS
December 30th, 2014 - 8:23amOh, this type of poll is always difficult! I find it hard to pick a favourite between Troughton and McCoy. Troughton was a fun and eccentric Doctor and without him proving Doctor Who could survive a drastic change of cast, we wouldn’t have the show now. Plus he got some awesome stories, and Doctor Who has always looked amazing in black and white.
Oh, but McCoy… He could turn from being funny and bizarre to being cunning and manipulative. Such an under appreciated Doctor. And, despite what “they” may say, he got a lot of brilliant stories. If only he wasn’t cut off before his time.
following them, on level pegging, are Smith and Capaldi. They effectively represent the two sides of the Doctor’s personality found in McCoy and both have some very good stories under their belts. I don’t know if I’d ever go so far as calling Moffat’s era the Golden Age (I don’t think it is) but it is a very strong era with lots of standout scripts. Every bit as good as RTD’s era, I just marginally prefer the Doctors from recent times.
Also, a quick shoutout to the amazing Big Finish Doctors. Were it not for Big Finish, Colin Baker and Paul McGann would be right down near the bottom of my running due to their respective eras. But on audio, they’ve really grown. A lot. Enough to prove that both of them are pretty damn perfect Doctors. Bravo.
This time though, I’m voting Troughton. Don’t know how I’ll fall in the next poll.
Dalek The Supreme
December 30th, 2014 - 2:51amMatt Smith is the Doctor’s character personified for me. He’s a tired old man, and you can see it sometimes during the really serious moments, when his eyes glaze over and he monologues like Sylvester McCoy’s Doctor. He’s eccentric and wild, like Tom Baker’s Doctor, or Patrick Troughton’s Doctor on a sugar rush, his entire demeanor suggests he’s not from this world, with his strange sense of fashion, and of food. His various costumes, even his more casual Series 6/7A costume, are very Doctor-y. He has elements of my three favorite classic Doctors, but also his own spin on it. He features in my favorite episodes, The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang; he stars in my favorite season, Series 5; he has my favorite costume, TARDIS, and Sonic Screwdriver; and there’s something to like in every one of his episodes.

December 30th, 2014 - 12:51pmNow you are talking…its the 10th anniversary of the show’s rival next year…what would be more fitting than a multi doctor story with the 8th and 12th.
Moffat…get writing 🙂

December 30th, 2014 - 8:50pmIf it’s the 10th Anniversary of the revival, then why not have some more New Series Doctors? I think Matt Smith, David Tennant, and John Hurt should return. Maybe Eccleston if he’s willing.

December 29th, 2014 - 9:57pmFor me it is a close competition between Jon Pertwee and Christopher Eccleston, but Jon Pertwee just wins for me. My third favourite is Patrick Troughton.
drwhofan4ever
December 29th, 2014 - 9:30pmSylvester McCoy, peter capaldi, David tennant and tom baker. So hard to choose but I had to go with sylvester.

December 29th, 2014 - 9:20pmI think Peter Cushing should be given a mention!

December 29th, 2014 - 6:34pmTom Baker. The best of the best. Without a doubt. My earliest memory of watching Dr Who was the Green Death with Jon Pertwee.

December 29th, 2014 - 4:40pmJon Pertwee, best performance, best actor and the stories in his era are the best. My second would be Patrick Troughton and my third would be David Tennant.

December 29th, 2014 - 4:06pmThis is the toughest vote yet… I was torn between four different Doctors, these being my reasons:
Jon Pertwee – The incarnation to introduce me to Classic Who, this Doctor’s personality was just great. I loved his relationship with UNIT, his love for gadgets and science-y stuff and his enthusiastic yet strict traits.
David Tennant – Despite Eccleston being my first Doctor, Tennant is just ‘My’ Doctor. He made me love the show even more and he had some fantastic stories (Particularly Series 4, and a good amount of episodes ranging from Series 2-3). I was sadenned by his departure announcement back in 2008/9.
Matt Smith – This man has to be one of the most brilliant actors I have ever seen. Took me a few episodes to like his incarnation though. Recently I’ve been looking back on to his era: the episodes, companions, merchandise… And I’ve realised how much I missed it. Memorable mentions to Series 5 and 7.
Peter Capaldi – One of the very few Doctors which I liked right away. After Deep Breath had finished I remember saying to my friends that Capaldi is already in my top 5 Doctors… As the series progressed he was amazing, and featured in some of the best episodes of all Who, including my all-time favourite, ‘Mummy on the Orient Express’.
Eventually, I struggled very much… But I narrowly chose Capaldi over those 4. 🙂

December 30th, 2014 - 7:06amGood conclusion. When in doubt, go for the Doctor who appears in your favorite episode.

December 29th, 2014 - 3:31pmFrom the classic series I loved Tom Baker’s Doctor and from the new series I’ve enjoyed Peter Capaldi’s portrayal the best!

December 29th, 2014 - 3:12pmTheres fourteen Doctors right?
The 1st Doctor
The 2nd Doctor
The 3rd Doctor
The 4th Doctor
The 5th Doctor
The 6th Doctor
The 7th Doctor
The 8th Doctor
The War Doctor (9th Incarnation)
The 9th Doctor (10th Incarnation)
The 10th Doctor (11th Incarnation)
The 10th Doctor (12th Incarnation)
The 11th Doctor (13th Incarnation)
The 12th Doctor (14th Incarnation)
So there’s actually 14 Doctors then?
the astronaut of death
December 29th, 2014 - 3:19pmYep
CJ
December 29th, 2014 - 3:25pmGreat!
DOCTOR WHO ONE
December 29th, 2014 - 3:27pmYes, there is actually 14 Doctors officially.
John Hurt is the real 9th Doctor, making Christopher Eccleston the real 10th Doctor.
David Tennant is the real 11th and 12th Doctors. His 11th incarnation lasted between ‘The Parting of the Ways’ up to ‘The Stolen Earth’. His 12th incarnation lasted from ‘Journey’s End’ to ‘The End of Time’, this does NOT include his Meta-Crisis incarnation who is seperate. It may also have been the 12th Doctor seen with John Hurt and Matt Smith’s Doctor’s as well when you hear him say “Regeneration, it’s a Lottery”.
Matt Smith was the 13th and final incarnation of the original 13 Doctors, so Peter Capaldi is really the 14th Doctor, the first of a new generation of Doctors thanks to a new life cycle of regenerations –
DOCTOR WHO – THE NEXT GENERATION 😀
Anonymous
December 30th, 2014 - 2:20pm13 Doctors (inc War Doctor)….the 10th Doctor used his regeneration abilities twice – one of which he channelled off before his appearance changed but people should not mistake the meta-crises half human doctor as an incarnation – it was artificially created as a result of the regeneration energy in the severed hand and is not a true incarnation…it lived/lives parallel to the Doctor and is not part of his timeline and regeneration sequence.
doctor whos no.1 fan
January 2nd, 2015 - 10:28pmNO 13 the double TENNANT regeneration did not count (according to my instinks) watched it

December 29th, 2014 - 2:19pmDavid Tennant, of course!!! He’s a classically trained Shakespearean actor, and IMO, is the most talented actor ever!!! I do like Christopher Eccleston and Peter Capaldi; but David Tennant’s portrayal of the Doctor never fails to amaze me with his brilliant acting talent; and he will forever remain my favorite!!!
The five doctors
December 29th, 2014 - 1:44pmPoor Colin no votes 🙁
The Daleks’ Advocate
December 29th, 2014 - 5:38pmThat’s the problem with the “your favourite XXX” type of polls: I actually adore the Sixth Doctor, but he’s not *my favourite* Doctor. Now if I named my five favourite Doctors, Six would feature in the list: Nine, Four, Two, Six, and either Eight or Seven.
The five doctors
December 29th, 2014 - 11:24pmOne of my favourites but not top spot that would have to be a mix of David, Matt and Peter Capaldi but just saying it is’nt very fair that everyone else has millions (slightly exaggerated) votes
paddy
December 30th, 2014 - 2:45pmColin is hugely underrated imo, but suffered from appaling scripts.
Pertwee was my first dr (terror of the autons is my earliest tv memory) but he is myleast favourite – too straight and too ‘human’. Also a very poor actor i think.
Of the latest drs.. I am baffled by the popularity of Tennant but the rest are all great. Matt is my second favourite surpassed only by the peerless Ton Baker.

December 29th, 2014 - 1:40pmJohn Hurt, Matt Smith, David Tennant, Paul McGann, And Peter Capaldi. They’re All The Best! 😉
