The Rings of Akhaten had an overnight audience of 5.5 million viewers, a share of 28.8% of the total TV audience.
These overnight figures have become increasingly unreliable as to the true audience. Final figures will be available in a few days time.

May 6th, 2013 - 9:35pmI think the viewing figures have dropped especially after The Crimson Horror only getting 4.61 million overnight and back in series 4 it got around 7 million for a mid episode like this and not including iplayer views on the final rating may hide the true rating 🙂

April 8th, 2013 - 10:04amEveryone is saying “the overnights have dropped, I player existed back in 2006, you have to loo at the overnights!”. As said many times before me, peoples interests change. Back in 2006, more people watched it live than on I-player, but with more and more people learning how to interact on the internet everyday, less people rush home from jobs to watch episodes so that they can finish shopping, work etc. then catch up on I player or on record. Yes, it existed in 2006, but less people used the internet and I player. It’s been 8 years since the reboot, and even in that time we live in a much more cybernetic world (hopefully we won’t become cybermen anytime soon!)

April 7th, 2013 - 8:09pmYes, but it seemed to happen in the space of a year, before series 6 began. There was never any fuss about this “overnight” and “final” figure stuff until the Impossible Astronaut performed worse than expected.

April 7th, 2013 - 12:22pmNo, because Fires of Pompeii was 8 million, and The Shakespear Code got 7 million, and Tooth and Claw got a massive 9 million, and even Day Of The Moon got 7 million, this episode didn’t get as many viewers as other 2nd episodes get.

All the alternative viewing methods such as iPlayer and recording existed a few years ago, and they raked in more viewers just as they do now. But now, about 8 mil is considered a good final figure. That was considered a good overnight a few years ago.

New Earth had an overnight of 8.3 million and a final rating 8.62 million
Bells of St John had 6.2 overnight and the final ratings are at 8.3 so far with 2 more days to come in plus a lot more people will be using iplayer
The fact is people are not watching it “on the Night” like they used to
The problem is people are just looking at the overnight figures which yes show a huge drop but without realising what the final figures are ending up like.

April 7th, 2013 - 11:35amlol :~D but if you think about it, it’s more than a few. It’s gone from 8 million overnight on a good night to about six million on a good night. I ‘d say it’s lost around 2 million viewers, taking iPlayer into account as well. Now, if Steven Moffat can keep it at that level then it’s fine, all we gotta hope is that no more switch off.

Everyone says “Oh, but loads more people will catch up on iPLayer.” But back when Doctor Who pulled in 7/8 million viewers, iPlayer did exist, and people used it to catch up. People are talking like iPlayer and video recording only existed when series 6 began (when the ratings dropped.) No. In days of old, Doctor Who pulled in 7/8 million overnight and another 2 million or whatever on iPlayer.
I’m sorry, but the fact is that Doctor Who has lost viewers. Anyone who says otherwise is in denial.
